  1. I have been here a few times and their sandwiches are seriously good. They are not smothered in spices and sauces but have just enough to taste the grilled chicken and the prices are pretty good too
Big portions and great mint tea, what more can u ask for?

  2. Hungry Man Meal: name speaks for itself, get this if you have a voracious appetite and love a variety of meats (chicken, beef, sausage etc), its entirely satisfying, very flavorful, packed with onions, peppers, meat and cheese all in a fresh roll.

Cheesburger (double or triple or single): one of the best cheeseburgers you will find in Astoria or on Steinway.  Their serving size seems to have decreased in the past years, but a burger with fries is more than enough to satisfy an average person.  The meat is seasoned well, good size patty, toppings all add up to making this a really really great burger

The seating is very tight and good luck finding parking! I recommend always taking the food to go.

  3. Walking around Astoria looking for a shawarma shop we stopped here as the other great shawrma spot was under renovation.  Place had a little jam outside as there were a bunch of people ordering togo and waiting. The sitting area inside is more or less like a quick bite stool and table by the wall as the kitchen takes most of the space as it is needed with all the good stuff they have on the menu.

Looking through the kitchen you can see all the great kebabs ready to be cooked and all the great lamb, beef and veggie broth trays.  We started off by ordering a Chicken kebab , Falafel and kofta sandwiches, also beef and lamb broth platters with a large side order of french fries.  Now the taste…… what can i say it just was amazing …rightly cooked and the orders jsut came out all at same time rather than one at a time so we could all enjoy are food. Party of 5 killed a lot of food and we wanted more.

Had a nice discussion with the  owners who are Moroccan and gave us a good intro of their food which they said they order fresh meat everyday and marinate it with the basic ingredients ever. Food was right and the way the kitchen worked was every more of a jaw dropper with all the traffic in the store.

Do visit if you are in town as you cannot go wrong.

  4. I was not terribly impressed by my lamb kebab sandwich.

This hole in the wall caught my eye after a few drinks. Picked up a lamb kebab sandwich. Excellent flavor, but not the best texture. Lamb was cooked very well, veggies were fresh, and the olives were a nice touch. But it didn't really hold together well. My sandwich was falling apart. It pretty much defeats the purpose of the sandwich. They don't have just falafel on the menu either. I ordered some anyway and they charged a dollar a piece which is pretty ridiculous.

    Al-Basha still has my vote.

  5. Service, Price and Food Quantity…This place deserves nothing less than 5 stars!

Ever since I've moved to NY, my husband has been wanting to bring me here. He can't stop raving about this place, so I finally decided to try it last night.

My husband had his usual Kofta Sandwich. Since I'm not a big sandwich eater, I decided to try the hot menu bar. I saw Lamb Shank and Beef Shank and could not resist, nor decide which to get lol. I asked the staff for his recommendation and he said, "I can do half and half for you if you like." Yay!!

I opened the platter, and was blown away by the amount of food I just received for $13! This is the real deal! Delicious, fatty, moist…win! The platter come with delicious saffron rice and bread. Though on the heavier side, you won't be able to stop eating so be careful! It was way too much food for me so I had left overs for the next day and it tasted even better!

All I can say is, if your in Astoria, don't miss out on this hidden gem! It's well worth your money!! I can't wait to go back!

  6. I gather that there are much better halal sandwiches on the block than Halal Sandwich Shop. The setup: casual, counter, a couple seats, you go in, you order, you leave, bada bing bada boom. I got the lamb gyro. My boyfriend got the kofta kabob and his friend got lamb kabob and fries. We all thought our food was subpar. Sigh. 2 stars it is.

However, I will say that I couldn't get enough of the mint tea. Get it!

  7. Holy smokes batman, this is a ton of meat. But, can I really complain and am I really surprised? No.

Cultures that keep halal tend to be very meat centric and place is proof of that. A good friend swears by this place and I can see why. For $12 or less you get a ton of food and of much, much better quality than what the halal chicken and rice vendors serve (a exception is the Palestinian guy that sells chicken and rice by 30th avenue in ).

My two complaints: this place has the same vibe as the hookah lounges next door (mostly older men hovering around) and there seating is really tight. There is a line of stools along the counter that faces
a mirrored wall so you can watch meat falling from your mouth as other meat crazed patrons stumble past you.
