“i like austin street – very cute and irish cottage is adorable.”
“Legit the stereotypical Irish pub with the IRA member at the corner of the bar, and the friendliest bartenders in all of Queens.”

Stopped by on a Friday night. It's an older crowd, but we didn't mind. We ordered some wings, sliders, and drinks. The wings were pretty good and the sliders were alright. Our server was very nice and attentive (never had an empty glass too long). Worth coming by for a low key night to enjoy some food and drinks.
Great, no frills bar with friendly bartenders, reasonably priced drinks and a jukebox with an incredible music selection (which I promptly took over)…my kind of place. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Forest Hills.
(I'll write my April Challenge review for today later)
it's been a while since my first review and I feel it necessary to bump up the Cottage to four stars. not gonna lie, initially I felt "it's alright" but I've come to really like it as I spend more time (and money) here.
the owner and the bartenders are so friendly and inviting. they recognize regulars and newcomers alike. unlike some bars where the bartenders and management put themselves on a pedestal, it's not like that here! Sharon and the boys behind the bar will talk to anyone about anything. it's a real working/middle class bar with no pretentiousness. all types of people are welcome, though yes, it does tend towards us locals…not that there's anything wrong with that!
the jukebox is banging here. it tends towards various types of rock, which is awesome. good stuff too, none of that whiny emo crap. Dropkick Murphys, Black Sabbath, Journey, Thin Lizzy, Billy Joel, Iron Maiden, Dead Kennedys, and more.
it's a small place, but it's my small place. I've brought a few newcomers here and they've all had a blast.
while bars in other parts of the city get systemically wiped out in favor of places that serve overpriced martinis with dumbass "inspired" ingredients served by mustachioed dopes…the Irish Cottage is a place for those of us grounded in reality.
to quote the late, great Charlton Heston…you can take this bar from me when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!
We found this place that is in a corner off Austin, away from the bustling area. We chose it because it had decent prices. The interior decor was cute, it felt very homey, and it really felt like your were in Ireland. The food was standard Irish fare, with big portions. Although it was busy, service was very good and the food came out at reasonable times.
Irish beef stew- standard potluck beef with vegetables. It was pretty good, I especially liked the Guiness gravy.
Gaelic steak with mushroom sauce- It was pretty big for a 6oz sirloin. I ordered it medium rare and it was probably medium and too overdone and tough for my liking. I kept biting into the hard fatty pieces because the lighting was so dim and the gravy was covering all of the steak. The mashed potatoes tasted like it was instant.
french onion soup- I wasn't really impressed. It tasted like it was from a packet.
Anytime I ventured to The Cottage it was mainly for nightcap purposes. We didn't want to go home, but we didn't want to stay where we were, wherever that was.
Almost always opting for the cramped far left corner of the right angled horseshoe shaped bar we would order up some pints of Guinness as The Cottage offers the best local pours.
Initially I found the male bartender somewhat brash, but after spending more time and money from my corner seat the brashness subsided. No big surprise there.
I've eaten a few bar food items off the menu and always enjoyed my meals. The burger is nothing to write home about, but hits on the key importances of bar food. Fast, filling, inexpensive.
Oddly I enjoy The Cottage much more during the holiday season. The decorations and lights add such a nice cozyness, warmth and holiday feel that I recommend stopping in if your thanksgiving or Christmas shopping on or around Austin Street.
Last night marked my first trip to Irish Cottage. After hearing so much about the place from Mike B., I knew I was in for a treat. I felt like I was transported into an episode of "Ballykissangel," this Irish soap opera I used to watch on some random TV channel that showed international TV shows back in high school. What was especially cool was that the owner of the place was not only Irish but very familiar with "BallyK!" The jukebox played a lot of great tunes and while the whole crowd went wild for Drop Kick Murphy's, I knew I was at a four-star establishment when ABBA came on.
Caroline. 'nough said. She alone is reason enough to go.
She's fun, sweet, kind… yet she knows how to get down n dirty for a good time.
The crowd is usually a bunch of regulars but they are a friendly bunch! You'll be caught up in conversation in no time. We stepped in at 1pm on a Sat afternoon, tried about all the beers, had DELICIOUS Sherpards Pie and Fish and Chips, bet on our first horse and wandered out around 7pm… to head over to the Flying Pig.
Would most definitely come back. Its a great spot to just chill and hang out… but only is Caroline's there!
Dinner was night was very enjoyable. The venue has friendly staff and interesting beer.
Food: the typical American bar fare. I recommend their fries – so fresh and not too salty at all! Add some vinegar to experience Irish tastes. I had the Blue Cheese Burger, which was excellent. Jalapeno poppers and fried chicken were interesting. Everything seemed freshly made, albeit fried.
Service: extremely responsive – there weren't too many other patrons, likely due to the fact that it was a Monday evening.
Decor: this venue has an interesting setup with two entrances, one for the bar, the other for the dining area. I was so confused at first!
