  1. Maman
    NY Manhattan Tribeca
    3pm Wednesday 20th July 2016
    Four Stars

I had no idea that Maman was such a gourmet cafe and bakery.  I have seen their logo and locations around town but never stopped in.  We decided to switch up our coffee meetup location and tried Maman in Tribeca.  I was surprised to see such great selection of food items, baked goods, ice cream and alcoholic beverages. We sat outside at their single outdoor table.  I went inside to order a coffee and bypassed a group of people standing by the display case because they didn't seem to ordering with the lady at the counter. She told me the line started behind those people. So I walked back behind them and waited for them not to order anything. When they finally left the counter, I placed an order for a Large Iced Coffee and Iced Dirty Chai Latte ($10). The coffee came in a clear plastic cup with their logo.  The ice was large one inch cold draft ice cubes. The coffee itself was mellow, low in caffeine, with lightness to it. Overall, a friendly and good experience.

  2. I had no idea this place was even here! I was by Canal, craving a breakfast treat of some kind, and did a quick search and there it was, right under my nose. They haven't been open very long, are hidden by scaffolding, and their sign is in a completely unreadable font.

But once you find them you're in for a treat. It's a larger space than you first expect, extending far back. Open, bright, inviting. They import a lot of their furniture from France, they even have these little wagons that used to hold mail bags for the post office that they covered in big soft cushions and turned into couches. It feels like you're not in NY.

The staff behind the takeout counter welcomed me the moment I walked in and told me a little bit about the business. They have sandwiches, quiche, salads, coffee and pastries. I ordered a pistachio cake and a smoked salmon sandwich with avocado, dill, arugula and ricotta on a croissant.

The cake was super moist but not quite sweet enough for me, though it does come with a nice layer of hard frosting along the edges. The smoked salmon sandwich was fantastic though. Two slices of salmon, fresh ingredients, a crunch from the arugula, creaminess from the avocado and ricotta. Perfect for a summer morning and only $6.

They serve brunch and have ample seating inside, check it out!

  3. Came by for a to-go lunch with a friend.

Beautiful decor and ambiance inside — very tea room like. Loved the fact there were benches set up outside as well. There is a to go portion and a proper sit down portion to the place.

I was surprised that the sandwich options they had all had meat (even though the menu online had a few veg options). I got the Jacqueline (eggplant and prosciutto, I just took off the proscuitto) as well as a slice of the lemon poppy seed bread and a creamcheese/pretzel/chocolate(?) cookie.

The sandwich was small but filling. Unfortunately, it was quite oily which gave it a different texture and saltiness. The lemon poppy slice was good but it was major very moist and was dense; nothing amazing. The cookie was extraordinary however! So soft and perfectly sweet. The saltiness and crunch of the pretzel were a nice touch — would go back for that cookie alone.

Overall, prices were okay but 2/3 of what I got was just okay. Wish they had more vegetarian offerings!

  4. I've never been to the SoHo cafe, so when I found out it opened a Tribeca location, I found time to visit within its opening week.  Needless to say, I've been going back ever since.  The place is separated into the To-Go section and the Salle-A-Manger (Dining Room), and I've been to both so I'll separate the two.

To-Go: The quiche, which they're famous for and changes everyday depending on ingredients, is really good!  It didn't feel as heavy as I expected it might be, and the buttery crust is really good!  Other standouts include the lemon tart and the matcha cream puff (they had another name for it but I forgot what it was)!  Also, there is a very casual seating area with cute cushions and wooden tables where you could enjoy the food!

Salle-A-Manger: So I've only been here once, and I got the deconstructed avocado toast.  Basically what it entailed was literally a plate of avocados, tomato salsa, a fried egg, a dash of sea salt, sunflower seeds, chilli powder and a few slices of toast.  Combined together, the portion was actually decent sized, but I wish they gave a bit more avocado (but I won't complain).  Definitely an interesting take on the ubiquitous avotoast though!

  5. This new bigger location has the same great pastries as at the original location, which is pretty close by in Soho. In addition though, they also have full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus here, with lots more options than the mostly quick serve items on Centre Street.

They also have Tropeziennes here, which consist of a pastry cream sandwiches between brioche, in 3 flavors (plain, coffee and matcha). I wasn't the biggest fan of this thing, which is served cool, but you can't go wrong with the Nutty Chocolate Chip Cookie or the Croissants, especially when they're warmed up.

The sandwiches are a solid option too for a quick lunch. The cheesy Croque Maman ($7) was ok, but the massive bread was a little boring after it cooled down. The Jacques ($8), on the other hand, was excellent, a delicious tuna sandwich on a perfect, fluffy roll.

After 5, the back area transforms into a sit down restaurant where dinner is served, but you can still grab some of the good stuff from the front area.

  6. almost gave it a 4 because it is just so beautiful inside. the wall art, large, comfortable couches, sets of tables at the back, plenty of plants, and a well kept service counter make this a very aesthetically calming and pleasant cafe / restaurant to sit in. i found the food and coffee over-priced, and given that this is not just a cafe but also a restaurant, it earns 3 stars. service was polite as well, around closing they gave away pineapple + custard brioches, on the house.

  7. If you're looking for a cute place for brunch or coffee date, this is the perfect cafe to visit. They have a great variety of baked goods, sandwiches, coffee, tea, and other drinks up front, or you can always opt to get waiter service in the back. There are plenty of seats with extremely comfortable pillows lining up the benches. And not to mention, they have the cutest coffee cups ever. The employees are also extremely helpful and friendly!

  8. I've been to their small cafe in SoHo and their chicken place.  Tonight on my way home, I stumbled on their restaurant.

They serve fine food but informal setting with trendy dishes and nice presentation.  It's no wonder, because the chef is a Michelin Star Chef in France.

I like this restaurant because most of the staff that served me were French too!  I felt like I was in Paris because of the ambience and of course the food!  My bouillabaisse was not with tomatoes but a perfect creamy consistency but did not taste like cream.  The fish was cooked perfectly served with potatoes, carrots, and braised leek.

My salad was served in two dishes.  On top was the mini oak lettuce leaves and with dried tomatoes and shaved Parmesan cheese.  When he took the plate of lettuce away from the top upon serving; the bottom dish contained the cut pieces of braised leeks on top of walnut puree mousse with dried tomatoes as well.

I loved my healthy French style light dinner done perfectly. It's not the cookie cutter French food. The sauce was excellent as what French cooking is known for.  The sauce of my bouillabaisse was smooth and flavorful.  It was like smooth gravy served with fish with carrots and leek.

The prompt friendly service was a big plus! I wish they'd open one in my area.

    Definitely Bon Appetite!
