Gyro House

“the best street meat in manhattan.”

“Not only do the vegetables include lettuce and tomatoes, but also zucchini, chickpeas, peppers, eggplant, carrots and I'm probably missing something else.”

“Before I begin my review, I want to remind you that this place sits in FiDi, where the streets are gritty and food options are skimpy.”

  1. I ordered the mixed plate (gyro and chicken) for $7 and got a massive plate of food. I liked that the meat was tender and not dry. This could easily have been 1.5 lunches, but this fatty finished everything in one sitting.

Going to finish this review before food coma kicksssssss……….. kfnakflakjaaoelfil

  2. Good street food. Gyro had a nice (and unexpected) assortment of vegetables tucked into the pita. It was a nice first-time ordering experience for my teenaged son on his field trip to NYC, followed by a pleasant dining experience in the adjacent park. We didn't get sick later, so it passes the most important street food test.

  3. So this place is not consistent…the last time I picked up food here last Friday on 3/18.  The chicken was not flavorful, the sauce was very watery.  Basically there was no flavor to what I was eating.  I had got a salad and it was drenched in the white sauce which would have been fine had it been tasty but it sadly was not this time.  I also did not get any fresh veggies like last time.  i went about 4pm this time, picking up food for dinner.  But, I have been here before at about 330/4p and the food was just as good as the first time I have had it….This might be questionable if I will come back here again….

  4. Absolutely my go to cart in the FiDi! It's easily noticeable as it's the only real truck/vehicle in the Zuccotti Park area and on the front of the truck it states Gyro House. It's also situated away from the rest of its competitors on the SE corner of Cedar St and Broadway.

As for the food, it is not only delicious, but extremely filling! The chicken and lamb tastes so much fresher than the other carts and they give you your money's worth inside the box. Many carts just add lettuce and tomatoes, but gyro house adds onions, chopped peppers and zucchini in there as well! You're not going to find too many carts that add all of those ingredients. My coworkers were going to a few different carts over the last few years and I took them here once. They also agreed that the flavors in the chicken/lamb over rice here are amazing and the serving size is more than they could ask for!

For $6 (which is typically the going price these days for street meat chicken/lamb over rice), it is totally worth the price if you get it from here!

  5. Gyro plate for six bucks is a real bargain.  Meat is tasty and not too greasy and the plate has rice and a ton of veggies.  Hot sauce is really good and they don't skimp on it.  I don't  eat white sauce so no comments on that.  Always has a line but it moves.

  6. I don't know if this truck replaced the 'Halal 'Frito Lay' Truck' or this is the Frito Lay Truck. Signs point to that it is the Frito Lay truck because you can still see one of the logos above the passenger side door. The truck looks exactly the same, however the staff is different and the meat seems to be cooked slightly different, unless if it's because I haven't been here for a while.

Gyro House makes a notably delicious chicken over rice for $5. I also asked to try the lamb which the chef gladly threw a couple slices on top. The chicken was tender and flavorful, good and exactly what one would come to expect. I received a couple slices of lamb from the outside of doner kebab, which resulted in a very crispy side with moist ground lamb underneath. It was not as salty as the prior vendor, making for a much better lamb. The yellow rice was heavily seasoned, though not to the point where you would gag, making for a yummy rice mixed with sauteed diced onions. The salad was typical with the shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes, but the addition of very bitter cubes of zucchini kind of threw me off and made me gag once or twice. I never knew zuchinni could be that bitter!! As for the sauces, white sauce was standard, but thumbs up for their hot sauce which actually had some decent heat. Enough to really hit me in the back of the throat.

Generous portions, decent lines signifying a strong following, and a hot sauce that actually packs some heat. I think Gyro House is definitely a step up from its counterpart, the Frito Lay truck. My coworker ordered the Falafel Platter for $5 which actually seemed quite interesting with French Fries and an assortment of colorful vegetables (peppers, pickles, etc.). I may have to come back and check that dish out.

  7. Love this truck! Best halal I have had any where in the city! I always get the lamb over rice and have also grabbed their gyro on occasion. If a friend or family member comes to visit or hell if a stranger asks for a recommendation, this is the place I refer them to. The only complaint I have about this place is that they aren't around during the weekend!!!
