If you are in New York and like beer and trivia night – go here! Go early though to get your table because it is popular. We arrived a bit late but being a party of 2 we managed to get a table.
The trivia guy was super friendly and energetic and I liked the trivia even though one round we got zero points. The good drinks helped soften the blow 🙂
The food smelled great but we were on a budget that night and were also instructed to eat all the food in the fridge, but I digress. The food smelled yummy and I didn't see any food so I think the patrons gobbled it all up. And I heard from 3 others that the food is good there.
Will I go again? – Yes!
Bonus: I received a free draught for Checking In (thank you Yelp!).
Oh yeah… Loved the music playing – the music can be a hint or hindrance to trivia answers. Nice twist. 😉
Yes, yes, and more yes.
THE PLACE: Stopped by this spot on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30p for brunch! My friend & I were seated right away in one of the booths which was adorable and cool. Fresh flowers, glass bottle of water for the table, tons of natural light from a huge row of big windows at the front of the restaurant, some music playing, general average loudness of brunch. All around great vibe and ambience.
THE FOOD!: Sheesh. Our server RACHEL 🙂 was super knowledgable of the menu and gave us some excellent suggestions. We started out with "flat white" latte's and 2 buttermilk biscuits (huge, delicious, so good) which came with jam & butter. I ordered a side of the sausage gravy for my biscuit, which came out piping hot and deliciously rich and spicy. (There was so much biscuit and gravy that I took half of it home). We also each ordered a bourbon cocktail called "pancakes and syrup" which was insane- really strong, really delicious, and came out with a maple glazed piece of bacon in it. SO good. Next up was the grapefruit brulee- grilled to perfection with sugar and blueberries, and expertly cut for easy dining… this was a MUST order. My friend and I split it which was plenty. As if all that wasn't enough, we decided to also each order a brunch entree. I ordered the chilaquiles and my friend ordered the catfish po boy. Both were really flavorful, plated beautifully, and got absolutely crushed. hah! The chilaquiles were different from other kinds I have had- it came with salsa verde and pice de gallo which was a new experience for me (used salsa roja). Delicious! Also had black beans, pulled pork, and 2 sunny side up eggs. Our server Rachel cracked fresh black pepper over my plate and made it perfect. The po bo had fried catfish, slaw, lettuce some type of aioli on it, on some great bread. Really hearty and came with fries.
RECAP: *highly recommend*

– "pancakes & syrup" bourbon cocktail

This place is a 5-star establishment. If you're looking for a $20 bottomless mimosa brunch, this is not your place. Come here for a few really good cocktails, delicious & well-prepared food, gorgeous natural light, great service, cool decor and a chill crowd void of college kids and blaring party music.
I will definitely be coming back for brunch, and I plan on trying the dinner menu ASAP. Love this place!!
This place is a great neighborhood spot! I love the downstairs area – super intimate and kind of looks like a cave. You don't get cell reception down there. I've come here a few times to watch sports – basketball, hockey to name a few. I believe they have 3 or 4 TVs – just above the bar. The only reason I'm lacking in a star is because we were at a friend's birthday in the downstairs area, and my friend and I asked the bartender (there's a tiny bar downstairs) if we could have two beers. First of all, the bartender proceeded to take at LEAST 5 other peoples' orders before giving us ours. Secondly, when we asked for our bill, we waited there for 10 minutes, and he never gave it to us. So, we left.
Overall, a nice place, definitely worth a visit.
I only stopped by here for a quick drink at a going away party, but from what I saw I really liked this place. The space is unique (re: big!), the menu simple and the service A+. While it's a little pricier for this area, I'd happily pay for the high quality food, great staff, etc.
Amazing place for a rich and hearty classic American brunch. The price is a bit high but worth it in my opinion for reliable quality. My friends ordered brunch burgers and black berry pancakes. I didn't try the burgers but they looked perfect and everyone raved. Pancakes were delicious as well. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with chicken which was honestly to die for. The skin had an amazing flaky crunch and the meat was tender and juicy. For drinks I had a Bloody Mary and a Bloody Mary Rufus which means they add a shot of habanero juice. Both were spicy and strong. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because they wouldn't split the bill for a group of 5. We divided everything up and the waitress messed up the charges. Kind of annoying but the food far and away makes up for the small inconvenience we had at the end. Overall highly recommend for brunch
I got to check out this spot on a recent trip. I felt like I was stepping into a pub from an Edgar Allen Poe short story…full of plush velvety curtained booths and dark wood furniture. It felt so cozy and retro to me. The food was good and my minty bourbon drink was delicious! Thanks for making this Southern girl feel right at home.
Pros:
I really love the atmosphere here. It's a nicer bar next to Pratt and would be a fabulous place to take a date. It's quite romantic–dark with candles and very breezy during the summer.
My beer was $7 and my friend's was $10 for a beer/root beer float. Compared to Manhattan, these prices are pretty cheap, but this is a perfect price range for college students.
Cons:
I asked the bartender for some suggestions and he had trouble recommending me some selections, which shows that he didn't really know the menu that well.
When I was closing my tab, he automatically swiped my card for both of our drinks without asking how we wanted to pay (we were going to go dutch). I just felt like this bartender showed his naivety and deterred from my experience.
Putnam's Pub & Cooker is a comfortable hang out with good food & friendly service.
I love mac n' cheese so I couldn't pass on getting it as an appetizer. The blend of gruyere cheese & truffle oil made the dish creamy & savory.
As an entree, I ordered the NY strip steak, which included mashed potatoes, shallots, & broccoli rabe. The steak was well cooked & the mashed potatoes were the best. They were mashed well & seasoned with the right amount of butter & salt. I did not expect the steak to be as big as it was so if this special is still available, go hungry or share it.
I sampled the pan seared scottish salmon, which was served with brussel sprouts, cauliflower puree, & cipollini onions. The fish was lightly seasoned & cooked well & the cipollini onions added great flavor to the dish. Overall I enjoyed my experience at Putnam & Pub & I will come back to explore their draft & cocktail menu.
