“Be mindful that they only take AMEX or cash and only serve beer and wine (or wine cocktails.)”

“The food here is amazing–my personal favorites–escargot and the veal medallions with gorgonzola gnocchi.”

  1. My friend likes to frequent this place for happy hours. It's generally very empty until 8:30 or 9, when people start arriving for dinner and the live music is playing. Our small group was hanging around the bar, ordering drinks and food, and they were enjoyable as the previous times we'd been here. I tried the lardons et roquefort salad, which is probably the world's most unhealthiest salad, but it was delicious. How can you go wrong with greens covered in warm bacon and cheese?

Things went a little downhill when I went to cash out. I needed to leave early, so I specifically asked for MY check. The bartender took it upon himself to charge my order – AND everyone else's – on my bill and then rudely told me he couldn't give me a separate check since he had already cashed our whole party out even though they were still ordering and planning to stay longer. Seriously?

I then asked if it would be okay if I only paid my part and the others could pay when they finished. He said okay – but then refused to calculate my part of the bill and told me I needed to tell him how much I would pay! So here I was, using my phone calculator to add up my bill + tax+ tip. Not that it was difficult, but it's the principle here. There's no excuse for you to screw up my bill and then act as though I'm asking too much of you to give me a correct total!

So for that kind of behavior I do have to take it down a star. In addition, I witnessed the manager acting rude and dismissive toward other customers, and it didn't sit well with me. It's still a fun place with good food, shame about the service.

  2. The scallops are terrific! Crispy on the surface, super tender inside!

Jazz with candle dinner is always a good choice for a date night.

The waitress actually speaks French in a French restaurant, which is by default a good sign

  3. It's a cool, chill spot for some brunch and the live music was an excellent draw. The place is a decent size but the tables can be on the small side. This place is not a bad option for Sunday morning.

    The food:

Avocado Toast- Toasted country bread, touch of crushed chili peppers topped with sunny side egg, served with arugula salad, pomegranate, fresh dill, feta cheese, olive oil-balsamic vinegar. This is kinda the rage all over brunches in the New York area. The avo toast was good but it was kinda lacking a wow factor, it was kinda too simple. I did, however,  like the hint of the pepper flake which was new and unique twist, the arugula paired well, the pomegranate offered a nice sweetness but I was not a fan of the abundance of feta, it was so overpowering. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Spicy Merguez Lamb Sausages- These were excellent, they had such a wonderful flavor and the perfect snap. I really enjoyed these a lot. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Waffles- Soft and crispy waffles with strawberries and blueberries. I have a pretty strong pet peeve with completely soft waffles, I enjoy waffles that are crispy on the outside yet light and airy on the inside. The waffle here was completely soft, the flavor of everything was OK, but there needed to be some texture, i felt like I was eating a pancake in the shape of a waffle. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

  4. When you're looking for live jazz music and French food, Jules Bistro is the spot you're looking for.  Their restaurant was adorned with red theme for the Valentine's holiday, and included a kissing booth at the entrance of the restaurant.

The place is relatively small, some would call it cozy.  One should expect a packed house when coming here for Valentine's Day.  They provided a pre fix menu for the evening, serving items such as mushroom soup, salmon crostini and salad for their appetizer.  Their mushroom soup contained a strong taste of mushroom and was ever so creamy.  The salmon crostini was nicely smoked and sat atop a nicely toasted bread.  For their entree, my fiance tried their Filet Mignon and had their Duck Confit.  The steak was nice and tender, my fiance said it was a good size cut and served with veggies and potato.  The Duck Confit was tender and not as oily as I had expected from a duck.  Their sauce for the duck was fruity and balanced well with the meat.

The music was nice and carried on for the majority of the evening.  It wasn't too loud and could carry on conversation without having to yell.

I would like to visit again and try their full menu.

  5. A little on the pricey side! But they have the best creme brulee on earth, also an interesting selection of French beer. An excellent place for brunch.

  6. I didn't want to write a review about this place because I want to keep it hidden! Jules is wonderful! After walking by many times, I finally decided to give it a try.

The atmosphere reminds me of what I picture 1920's Paris to be. It's tiny inside and fills up fast. The food is good French staples and tasty. There is live jazz, which makes the atmosphere even better.

It's good for dates, friends, or family. Not for kids.

I'm looking forward to going back!

PS, it's cash or Amex only!!!

  7. the place gets the casual french jazz bar done right, along with great food and service. the steak with mushroom risotto is absolutely amazing…i cant decide if i liked the steak or mushroom risotto more, each spoonful i took had a but of both in it. On a lazy sunday afternoon at around 3pm i swung by and there were two french girls singing on the little stage, and it just felt like you were in a parisian bistro; the music wasn't jazzy but more in the vein of french folk music and it totally just puts you in the mood to drink wine and smoke cigarettes.

the service is also very quick and attentive and while there aren;t that many servers, they pay attention to everyones table perfectly. the only thing i wish was that they had the steak and risotto on their brunch menu since right now its only on their dinner menu. overall, great mood, great food and great people.

  8. I'm not sure why this spot doesn't have higher ratings.

I LOVE Jules. The ambiance. Decor.. I used to frequent this spot in 2009 during my clerkship. I would sit outside or inside, sometimes alone, sometimes w/ friends… write, read, sip coffee, eat, drink… and listen to FREE JAZZ.

I think I stopped going, because of pensive nostalgia. One of my closest friends moved to San Francisco a few years ago… and Jules was our catch-up spot when she lived in NYC.

Fast forward to last night. Spouse and I were on date night and we wanted to hear jazz… we were in the area… so we went to Jules.

The fresh cut fries and escargot were delicious (and the vacqueyras)! AND the band was lovely.

Such a perfect night. I am over my pensive nostalgic lull and I plan to come back more often.

    Such a hidden gem.
