First stop when arriving in NYC, Jean-Gorges. Reservations were made for 5 people at 11:45am. Upon arrival we were greeted by the lovely hosts by the door and had our coats checked in, and had to wait a few minutes before we were seated.
We were immediately presented with menus and brought complementary breads and water to start off; as our server feature their menu. Bottle of champagne for starters!
Moving on, all courses:
Jean Gorges Tastes of Spring: (Two plates $58, each additional plate $29) is what we decided to do…
-Egg Caviar: Presentation was very unique, and prepared nicely. Recommend.
-Toasted Caviar and Herbs: This was made perfectly, every single bite melts in your mouth and what was unique was that it tasted like a grilled cheese sandwich. RECOMMEND!
-Sea Uchi: There was nothing special about this dish, it was very simple.
-Yellowfin Tuna Ribbons, Avocado & Spicy Radish, Ginger Marinade: This dish seems to be one of their popular items from their Spring Tasting, and a dish that I enjoyed and would recommend.
-Black Sea Bass: This would have to be my favorite dish so yes definitely recommend.
-Crispy Confit of Suckling Pig ($10 Supplement): As far as this dish goes, I wasn't a really big fan of. There were no elements about this dish that stood out.
-Caramelized Beef Tenderloin w/ summer squash & miso butter ($15 Supplement): This dish was mediocre, nothing outstanding.
-Peekyto Crab Risotto: I would not recommend this dish. It was a bit more on the saltier side than my liking.
Overall, the experience was decent. The food here wasn't as great as I expected especially considering that it was voted one of the best restaurants in America, according to "The Daily Meal". And the service was decent as well. Other than that, I did enjoy the presentation of each dish and the vibe of the restaurant. And lastly, complementary chocolate!! The varieties of chocolates served at the end was certainly a plus and melted in your mouth. With that said, there wasn't a dish that I absolutely LOVED to say the least, but you can't go wrong with the Black Seabass! That pretty much concludes my whole dine in experience.
One of the better 5 star places in the US.
For NYC I put this slightlyyyyy below EMP but otherwise a fantastic experience. (Above bernardin and definitely better than per se).
Tasting menu changes so I won't go into too much details. each course was spot on. In fact we got a second order of the sea urchin because it was so good.
From amuse to dessert it was completely spot on food wise. Service was top notch As well.
All in all great meal! Well worth the price.
Sure it's not the cheapest meal out there, but it is soooo worth it! I always see eating as more than just eating the food – at least for me, the ambience, service and company matters a lot. I went with a good friend, so company was all set. Service was impeccable – along with every course, we had an explanation of what we were eating by our knowledgeable waitress who was so smiley! Ambience was perfect as well – we went at around 6pm, so the sun was just starting to set, and with those gentle rays lighting up the garden-themed room, I really thought I was eating at a castle. Needless to say, the food was amazing as well, and you could tell the efforts put into preparing every dish – from the cooking itself to the plating – everything was just so perfect!
My second visit here. And it was better than the last time.
From the very beginning they really took care of me. Though it looked like I had the kids table since I was eating by myself, but whatever, kids table or not, service was consistent as compared to the big tables.
This time I did the Autumn Seasons Menu. My favorite was the mushroom salad. That sauce gave it an extra kick that I'll never forget. And for dessert, I pretty much got everything and I wanted more.
Miss Caroline was so hospitable to me. She was superb in all respects. I wasn't pleased with the venison so she replaced with it the squab. Way to go above and beyond.
My third time here and excellent as always. Beautiful dining room and fine service. The dishes are creative and thought out. Great wine list and Kir Royale is available upon request. Bravo!
Now, where do I start…This is my favorite and most consistent 3 star Michelin restaurant in NYC (or maybe the world). I've been coming here since 2002. It has ALWAYS been good.
Food/Drinks: The best!!
Egg Caviar – very good, as with most caviar dishes, it could be bigger.
Toasted egg yolk, caviar and herbs – very good, but the last time I had it; there was a little sea salt or something added to the top that made it a little more salter than usual. I would inquire about this the next time to ensure that it's not overpowering.
Sea urchin – good
Tuna Ribbons, Avocado, Spicy Radish, Ginger Marinade – This is a signature JG dish. Consistently good and fresh.
Warm White Asparagus – this dish gives my husband life (but he also loves white asparagus)!
Diver Scallops – are so good. The cauliflower and scallops are such a good combo.
Parmesan Risotto – very good.
Parmesan Crusted Organic Chicken – my favorite dish! This is a signature JG dish. Chicken thigh, cheese, and artichokes; what's not to like!!!
Caramelized Beef Tenderloin – very good.
Desserts are good. I typically get a chocolate themed one or passion fruit.
The wine list is amazing (as you would expect).
Atmosphere: I love this room. Three of the four walls are all windows (floor to ceiling), which excellent views of Columbus Circle and Central Park. It has amazing lighting. The room is mostly white and very simple decorated besides the massive light fixture in the center of the ceiling. It's understated but so elegant. It really feels special.
Service: Is very attentive and what you expected from this type of restaurant.
JG has been so consistent. It's not my best menu that I've ever had plate for plate, but it's been the most consistent at this level for over 14 years (for me). In the beginning, we used to come for dinner, now we mainly come for lunch now. Lunch is an excellent value for a 3 star Michelin restaurant (not as good as it use to be, but still a value). I've had the pleasure of dinning here so many times as well as coming for NYE for 4 years, which was so much fun (good food and a bomb DJ!!). I met JG once at his restaurant in Paris (of all places) and was able to personally tell him what dining at his restaurants (specifically JG in NYC has meant to me). He was so gracious. I will never forget that experience!!
All I can say is wow! Never in my life did I think that I would eat in a Michelin Three Star rated restaurant. However, me and my mom had the chance to eat here after my Aunt arranged a surprise birthday party here for my Great Uncle along with us and his friends, as this is his favorite restaurant! I knew this would be a superb experience as we got an excellent first impression of the service after Ashley, the hostess who answered the phone when we called the night before to take care of my mom's many food allergies, proved to be very accommodating and on point. When we arrived at the restaurant, we found the Maitre D's to be hospitable and welcoming, making for an excellent first impression. We then arrived in the dining room, which was elegant but whimsical, with plush chairs at the large table, a large and sleek chandelier with thin rods and fixtures shaped in a half-circle, a muted but warm yellowish color, and windows with views of trees around the exterior adding to the elegant and serene atmosphere. We were then introduced to our team of servers, including head waiter Eric along with his assistants, like Stephanie. They were thorough in explaining the menu and also in accommodating our food preferences and allergies, like my mom's many food allergies (too many to list) and my allergies to all grains except corn and rice. After being served a pleasantly fruity Champagne (I think it was a Brut), we started with an Amuse Boche of Raw Salmon along with a cucumber slice and a chickpea mash as well as a herb tea. This made for a fantastic start, as the salmon had a satiny sheen and melted in my mouth, along with a sightly spicy marinade as well as a savory chickpea spread which meshed well with the cool cucumber as well as a fragrant herbal tea. Up next, we received our appetizers and I loved the Madai Sashimi, which was Japanese Red Snapper, which was mild and tender in texture and accompanied by crunchy peas and greens that had the perfect bite to stand up to the buttermilk vinaigrette, which was creamy and had plenty of acidity to counterbalance the creaminess. Before I received my entree, along with some other guests, I decided to order one of the smoothies ($14), as it sounded delicious and Eric, our waiter recommended them. Since Eric knew I ordered the Black Sea Bass, he recommended the Ruby Red Juice, which proved to be fantastic with the flavors of sweet carrots, earthy beets, tangy oranges, sour lemon, and a kick of ginger. Our entrees arrived and I thought I died and went to heaven, as the Black Sea Bass (sans the nut and seed crust due to my allergies) was superb, with the sea bass being mild, tender, and flaky, along with a slightly crisp skin that held up well to the broth, which was sweet, sour, and savory. There were also various vegetables in my dish, including sweet and slightly acidic tomatoes, soft and earthy slices of potatoes, slightly caramelized pearl onions that had a bite, and nutty mushrooms that went together very well with my Black Sea Bass and the accompanying broth. Up next, most of us ordered desserts and thanks to Eric's recommendation based on taste and my food allergies, I had the Tropical Tasting ($12), which had a refreshing, fruity, and tangy Tropical Sorbet, small chunks of various fruits that contributed to sweet and sour flavors, and sweet and sour dried strawberry circles on top of the sorbet. I also enjoyed a rich and frothy cappuccino. At the end of our meal, we were also offered bold and sweet chocolates along with house-made marshmallow which I did not try due to egg allergies. One thing I need to add is that while the portions are from gargantuan, they are not small either and with the courses adding up, you will definitely feel satisfied. I cannot mention this meal without talking about the service, which added to the meal like well-played instruments add to the finest singer's voice. Eric and his team of assistants, including Stephanie, were very friendly, welcoming, accommodating, eager to please, and not pretentious at all. What's more? Their timing could not have been more excellent, as they made sure we always had everything we needed, including refills of our beverages and were efficient, yet unobtrusive as they cleaned the table and collected our finished dishes. While I probably will not have the pleasure of eating at Jean Georges again anytime soon, I would definitely return as the food, service, and atmosphere were superb and exceeded its Michelin Three-Star status in my book!
We made a reservation before the Chinese New Year of 2016. Jean Georges was the place we wanted to celebrate the 2016 Chinese New Year.
The whole experience was terrific. The service was great. The waiter always blinked his eyes, really cute and funny. They kept their eyes open and ready to serve you when you seemed to need something.
