Delicious lunch specials like the garlic fried chicken and items on their normal menu such as the jia jeng men were really good. Would definitely come back again if I wanted fusion Chinese/Korean lunch specials.
Good place if you want Korean-Chinese cuisine. I enjoyed the jjajangmyun and sweet&sour beef. My friend tried the naengmyun, which is a seasonal dish. She said it was alright.
I know four stars may be kind of high but the food is actually good so I wouldn't want to give it anything lower.
Came in for lunch and ordered the jjjam ppong. It was a bit bland and there was not enough seafood. I will return one more time to try their jja jang myun then decide whether to make it a staple lunch spot or not. No complimentary kimchi, I felt deprived.
I've been converted!! My friend and I were looking to order delivery and she was really craving champong and ja jang myun. We called this place up and found out that our apartment was out of range for their delivery service so what did we do? We dragged our little butts to the restaurant! That's how much we wanted to try their food and it wasn't a waste of time I'm proud to say I now have a new favorite ja jang myun place in NYC.
The restaurant wasn't busy when we went so we sat down right when we got in. We ordered the two noodles above and this sweet and sour fried pork dish. SO GOOD. I wish I remembered the name of this dish so that I could write it in the review but the only thing I remember about it is that it costs 16.99. Apparently it's a really popular takeout dish in Korea. But anyhoo, the noodles were also wonderful. The portions are huge and I liked the texture of these noodles. Not too soft but still held the flavor of the dish. The champong spice gets to you but it's pretty addicting. The ja jang myun comes out looking lke a big black glob but tastes really yummy I'm getting hungry just writing this review! Now I only wish the restaurant delivered to more areas Not sure if I'm down to cab over every time I'm craving some Korean noodles.
For me, a bowl of jajiang myun is the ultimate comfort food. It's what I grew up eating at 'Chinese' restaurants with my family, along with tang su yuk (sweet and sour pork). Now I realize what I was having wasn't so much Chinese and Korean-Chinese. Which is why I was excited to see that this place had a Korean Chinese menu.
For $9, I thought my bowl of jajiang myun was a pretty darn good deal. But I have to say I was flabbergasted when I looked at the beff tang su yuk and saw that it was $19! What the hell? I even asked my parents if that was a normal price when I was visiting home and they agreed that it was exorbitant… and they are EXPERTS at this stuff.
So a $9 bowl of those salty, familiar noodles (and a free glass of wine with Yelp check in) is a great value. I'll restrain myself from the side of beef just out of principle.
As for the space, it's a lot cleaner and classier than the Korean/Chinese places I'm used to going to. Maybe that's where the extra beef money is going??
Dong Chun Hong specializes in Korean-style Chinese cuisine. Although there are American Chinese food items like mapo tofu, lo mein, and kung pao chicken on the menu, your best bet is to get something from the Korean Chinese menu.
I came to Dong Chun Hong for lunch on a Saturday. They don't offer the regular lunch special on the weekends, but you can still get the lunch special course menu for $24.99/person (2 people minimum). The course menu included soup/salad, a choice of two meat entrees, a choice of noodles/rice, bread ("ggot bang"), and dessert. It seemed like a good deal (and a good way to sample the menu), so my friend and I opted for the lunch course.
We both got the Egg Soup – it was basically just eggs dropped into boiling water. Tasted like they put MSG to enhance the flavor. I should have gotten the salad instead!
We chose Yu San Seul (stir-fried beef with seafood and vegetables) and Tang Su Yuk as our meat entrees. I was quite pleased with both options! The Yu San Seul is sauteed in thick, gravy-like sauce. It was a bit heavy for my liking, but I liked the variety of mushroom and big pieces of shrimp (although there were only two) in the dish. The beef also tasted tender.
My favorite was the Tang Su Yuk. I see that a lot of people were not pleased with the not-so-crispy pork, but the dish we got was perfectly cooked. It had hot/crispy skin that was also chewy from using glutinous rice batter, while the meat inside was juicy. I was also impressed with the high meat to batter ratio.
Each person got a smaller portion of rice/noodle. I had the Jajang myun (noodle with traditional black bean sauce). It tasted fine – nothing spectacular. To be honest, I was too full to really be able to enjoy the noodle, which should have been the highlight at any Korean Chinese restaurant!
The lunch ended on a LOW note with a super disappointing "dessert." We essentially got a bowl of canned peaches. The rating would have been 4/5 with just the Tang Su Yuk alone, but I had to take away two stars for the extremely disappointing soup and dessert. It's never good to have AWFUL first and last impression…
Korean Chinese restaurants are not quite easy to find. A GOOD Korean Chinese restaurant is definitely a rare find outside of Korea. Fortunately, Dong Chun Hong can satisfy my cravings for jjamppong and Jjajangmyun.
Interior: it's surprisingly well decorated. A good size restaurant, clean and organized. I would describe it elegant, sort of.
Service: good. Nothing to complain about. I like that they serve banchan (free small dishes that comes with the meal) and also small free dessert (little sweet doughy ball, fried and glazed with sugar).
Food:
Jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle): YESSSS. Exactly the same thing I had in Korea. Noddles are nice and chewy, seafood broth is rich and plenty of seafood (squid, mussels etc.)
I will do finitely need to go back to try their Jjajangmyun and Tang Su Yuk.
Yelp suggested that I haven't reviewed this place yet, and asked me 'What keeps you coming back after 3 check-ins'?
1) The MSG keeps me coming back – everything here that I ordered tasted so good cause it's probably filled with MSG
2) It's close to my apartment
I honestly don't think this place is worth coming back more than once. It's overpriced, and there are so many Korean-Chinese food options on 32nd. If you must eat here, try to avoid the soup-based food and get brown rice (it's a bit more healthier).
Service however is good. They're well staffed and very attentive to what you need.
Also, free glass of wine when you check-in with Yelp
