Fire Pit BBQ

“Though we live quite close to the restaurant, the delivery time is incredibly long and takes about 1 1/2 hours to arrive.”

“I regularly get the chicken and ribs combo, which feeds 2, and is loaded with yellow rice and black beans.”

“The food is always good and it's a good value if you get takeout or delivery and order the whole chicken with the rice and beans or rice and fries.”

  1. We weren't in the mood for Italian so we looked for someplace new to try. This Portuguese BBQ joint a couple of blocks off Schuyler Ave was a very good find indeed.

The place is incredibly busy. That means your treats won't be sitting in a warming oven all day. Chances are, it will be made to order or it will have been made shortly before you ordered it.

We asked the nice gentleman behind the counter, baby backs or spare ribs? His answer? Baby backs but it would take 45 minutes to prepare. No worries, we had nowhere to be. We munched some perfectly grilled chorizo while we waited.

The ribs were excellent. I did think they could have benefited from five to eight minutes less cooking time but they really were delicious. Loved the hot sauce. It's a thick concoction, not the usual watery stuff served in other establishments. It was particularly good on the fries which were freshly cut and fried.

So my wife wasn't left out of our adventure, I brought home a to go order of grilled chicken, rice and beans. She loved every bite. Nothing was overly salty which pleased her no end.

Fire Pit BBQ serves up some really great eats. We will definitely be back.

  2. I've driven past this place a few times and smelled the great aroma of hardwood charcoal, just tempting me to come in.

It's a small place but the dining area is immaculately clean.  There are a lot of cool pro-carnivorous pictures on wall, like a picture of Popeye holding a can of spinach with caption saying "Where's the beef!"

I ordered skirt steak which came out sizzling on a cast iron skillet, marinated perfectly and was cooked to perfection juicy and not too tough, as skirt steak is known to be.  (Just looking at the picture I posted of it gets me hungry)  On a separate dish I got a enormous serving of rice and beans.

Everything was delicious, come here with a good appetite, cause you are gong to eat!

  3. Fire pit was a nice addition to Kearny, I couldn't really find anywhere else for BBQ in the area besides picnic so I was happy to try it.

My initial thoughts were it was okay, the BBQ was pretty decent but the side dishes were very generic. It didn't help that I tried delivery, but everything was soggy.

I tried it once more and picked it up, I decided to try the wings and they weren't very good. The sauce was too sweet and didn't taste anything like buffalo sauce.

The staff was nice but the food is only decent in my opinion, I'm not in any rush to go back.

  4. After reading the reviews, decided to give this place a try. I went in a Saturday night. There was only one other family in the place when I arrived.
They must do a big delivery and take-out business because I overhead the worker telling callers there was a 1 hr 45 min. Delivery wait.
I ordered a  BBQ whole chicken and a half order plus rice , fries and a salad. 45 minutes go by and we were still waiting for our food. The waiter finally tells us they have one whole chicken available but asked if I could take an order of ribs in place of the half order of chicken. I agreed since we were approaching an hour waiting for a BBQ chicken.
The chicken was actually pretty good. The ribs were nothing special….A bit dry and chewy.
I've been to quite a few Portuguese chicken spots and never waited this long for food…. I have waited to be seated but never waited this long for the food.
Lastly, I thought it was unprofessional for one of the workers to be sitting at a table and throwing the F-bomb out there. I personally didn't care, but there were kids in the place.
I noticed someone wrote it was cold….it sure was cold in there. I kept my jacket on.
I doubt I'll be back, I'll stick with my newark and Elizabeth spots.

  5. Firepit made three stars by the skin of their .. chicken.

First time customer and they let me down.  Called and placed my order for pick up. I asked to see if they also had combo specials as many other BBQ places do and he said yes, "Chicken and Ribs." I thought great, ribs aren't too healthy but they're my favorite. I subsequently asked about the sides and decided on the rice with beans instead of the rice with french fries. Twenty minutes and $17 later, I get to my designated location to eat only to reveal two issues:

    1) I received french fries, not the beans. I cannot tell you how annoying it is to know that I have to check my take out order before leaving the establishment (and will have to do so if I decide to give them another chance.) The fries were soggy and flavorless.

    2) –now, this is may really be my fault– I was surprised to have received beef ribs instead of pork ribs. I am avid BBQ eater and I've got to stay, usually it is by default when one uses the word "ribs" that it is understood to be pork ribs. Not at this establishment.  Therefore, I recommend you clarify between this distinction while placing your order with Firepit.

Overall the chicken was well seasoned and tasty. Wasn't overcooked as other reviews stated but it's clear that you are really rolling the dice at this place. I did enjoy the beef ribs and was glad they weren't overcooked. Ribs were a little pink in the middle, just the way I like it.

For the price I paid and the portion size, they're not too competitive. I have paid less and received way more at other eateries. Not eager to try them out again but I wouldn't cross them out indefinitely.

  6. Been here twice now. First time i had beef ribs and they were tasty, but the chicken was way overcooked and very dry. My friend ordered the T bone and was very happy with his choice. I recently had delivery and the chicken was tasty and juicy, but the pork ribs were way too dry and i could not even finish. If they were more consistent with the good stuff, it would be a sure shot spot for deliveries when i don't feel like cooking and they would earn another star. So roll the dice, get you some, and hopefully ENJOY!!!
