Houston Hall

“Overall this is a really great way to spend a Saturday, the place itself is really nice, and the crowd is a mid-20s type of crowd.”

“This former horse barn has high ceiling and gorgeous exposed wood beams still intact from the 1800's. It's a must see!!!”

“The huge space at Houston Hall keeps the noise level from ever getting to "deafening", even when it's full of people.”

  1. Came here for a work event and I really liked the open atmosphere. There are long tables with long benches so it's great for hosting large events. The appetizers were very good. Especially the prosciutto toast with a fig spread. That was my favorite! I couldn't stop eating them. Loved the pretzel with mustard dip and the chips. It was a HUGE pretzel! The size of your face!!! I grabbed the entire thing for our table haha

In terms of the main entrées, they were served family style. The pasta was cold and the salmon had a very artificial coloring to it. As if they added food coloring. It looked nothing like the salmon I've ever seen before. Makes you wonder… The mini burgers were okay. I took a bite and wasn't interested anymore. But seriously the desserts were so lame! Just brownies and cookies and they were dry as hell!! I felt like I was eating the dessert. I'm giving this place 4 stars only because the horderves were so good and I had already ate a handful before the main courses came out.

I loved Mckenzie's Hard Cider!! It was my first time trying it but it's so delicious! It's like apple juice for adults. Expecially if you're not someone who's too fond of beer. You also can't go wrong with the Riesling white wine.

If I come back, I'll definitely stick to just the appetizers and beer or wine. Everything else is a no-no.

  2. met up with some friends here after work. it's a loud beer hall in what was clearly an old warehouse/garage. the beers on hand are great – the dunkel they have is delicious!

service at the bar was slow. I think one more bartender would've sped things up wonderfully. our table's waitress seemed friendly albeit somewhat overworked with all the tables she had to cover.

the burger with gruyere was tasty, though a little overcooked for my liking. the chips were good. the wings are meaty and flavorful; I actually liked the sesame chili wings more than the buffalo.

looking around, the crowd was fairly young. a fair amount of the after-work crowd too (case in point, myself and the rest of my crew).

also, there was a baby shower – why someone would have their baby shower on a Wednesday night in a packed beer hall, I'll never know. of course they ended up being behind our table. later in the night, one member of that group kept proclaiming how her one friend was "SOOOOO HOT" (spoiler alert: she wasn't) and asking our group for validation of this. we left shortly after the requests for validation ramped up in both frequency and volume.

not a bad place, but probably not the right place if you want to have conversations with your friends.

  3. Houston Hall is a pretty chill place. Good place to just hang out, drink, and talk. They have music playing but it's not too loud. The place itself is pretty big with a bunch of bench tables.

  4. The Quick: Fun spot to day drink with friends and relive the glory days of college in a semi classier atmosphere. Food is decent and beers are gigantic. Good for groups if you get there early / don't mind standing — huge bar with high ceilings.

  5. It's a big ol' barn with a bunch of beers – which is exactly what a beer garden should be. No complaints.

  6. Nice place for happy hour post-work and convenient location! Large seating area with long tables were perfect for the large party I came in with. I like the vibe of the location and if you send snaps to their account they'll show you on their big screen (got featured quite a few times that afternoon :D) Our table ordered a bunch of beers and shared some apps. I got the saison and it was solid.

Would come back since it's so close to me and there's plenty of seating!

Side note, we met this really nice guy who's party shared the table with our group and treated all of us to multiple rounds of tequila shots! Thanks for hooking it up tequila shot man hah

  7. When my 2 friends and myself came in yesterday- it had been a very long day and we were just looking forward to sitting down, relaxing and having some food and drinks. When I walked in, I liked the look of the place- and it was chill for a Sunday- so I had high hopes. When I asked one of the waitresses if we could be sat- she told us to sit anywhere and to order from the bar. Was happy there was plenty of seating options, but not excited that there were no waitress to serve, which was kinda strange as I saw a bunch running around.

We ordered food and drinks at the bar and were told that the food would come to the bar and we had to get up again, walk over and pick it up in 10mins. Not as relaxing as I'd hope for- but ok, I'm not fussy. The food was not ready in 10mins so we had to keep walking up to the bar to see if the food was there yet- super inconvenient. When we finally got our food, my burger was not cooked to medium, it's was rare and cold. When I brought the burger back to the bar (again), the bartender argued that it was the right temperature- despite me telling him the meat was cold and looked undercooked. He begrudgingly ordered another burger and once again- had to keep checking to see if the food was ready.

Whoever decided this was a good idea for a restaurant – where the patrons have to continue serving themselves on a slow Sunday needs to reconsider this. It's not enjoyable and with the food being average and service terrible- not sure why anyone would ever come here. While the decor is nice and they probably feature lots of sporting games on their huge TVs- everything else is sorely lacking. Thankfully NYC is full of great options- so no need to ever return.

  8. A great atmoshphere, excellent happy hour and easy to come and go. We also had great service during a very busy time of day. Lots of TV screens, would be a good place to catch a game!
