Mocha Burger

“They have a selection of mocktails, which I found amusing and pleasant actually (I guess they just haven't gotten a liquor license yet?).”

“We each ordered burgers, BLT (Bacon and egg) and Funghi (caramelized mushroom and onion) as well as the wings, Disco fries, mint lemonade and Cajun fries.”

“The restaurant had a great feel to it – being decorated in a trendy fashion while staying true to the ruggedness of a burger/steak joint.”

  1. Mocha Burger is, best I can tell, fills some kind of overpriced kosher burger niche the owners felt was missing from the neighborhood, which makes even less sense than the Russian-run fried chicken and lobster place (Lobster Smack, anyone?). It's not that I didn't spot the new awning across the street from my building on Laguardia Place, but I had absolutely no curiosity to sate, what with Bareburger and other worthy options nearby (sadly, the Five Guys that used to be on this same block shuttered a couple of years ago). No, what brought me here was the plain and simple fact that nearly every other option at midnight on a Sunday night was not, err, very attractive.

As it was, we were just thankful to have this place open at a late hour. When we walked in, it sure looked like the staff was getting ready to hang up their dish towels and bounce. Fair enough, it was Sunday night. A guy who appeared to be the boss came out and made sure we had the menus and all, then resumed some kind of meeting he was having with the workers. Things seemed pretty loosey goosey, with staff in some phase of training.

The menu was horrendously overpriced, with a plain, smallish burger without fries running $13 and prices easily breaking $20 if you'd like something on it. (For perspective, an In 'N' Out double Animal Style is like $3.50). GF got the veggie burger, which she didn't mind. We split an overpriced order of fries. Home is across the street so we got takeout and the food was still in good condition. My burger was not bad, but mediocre for the price (though, honestly, no burger, not even Minetta's, should ever exceed $20).

I'm leaving what I consider a kind 3-star review, given that Mocha Burger was there to provide sustenance when I needed it. Leaving anything less would be like slamming someone who saves you from drowning because they didn't come on a luxury boat. I don't like to be unkind to local businesses, and don't wish they any ill will, but I will be floored if Mocha Burger celebrates a 1 year anniversary next year.

  2. This place is AMAZING! I have been looking for a kosher place around here, since I just moved from LA, and I could not be happier. The food is delicious, great vibes. I definitely recommend this place whether you keep kosher or not.
