AGAINST THE GRAIN!! AGAINST THE GRAIN!! For the love of God, if you're going to serve brisket, the first thing they tell you is to cut it against the grain. I can't believe a cow died just to have its parts cut incorrectly. Such dishonor to the cow.
I really want to give this place two stars tops because of this.
Nonetheless, even though the food isn't bad, it's no Texas bbq place. They don't have 1-3 meats with 2 sides as an option. You can't come in and ask for fatty brisket without them asking you to repeat yourself. You don't even get to watch them slice it. They do it in the back.
They use pellets instead of whole chunks of hardwood. Although I must admit it still had a good smokey flavor.
The brisket was a tad drier than I like. Unfortunately, I wasn't given fatty like I asked, but at least I got some outside with "burnt ends". I don't like that it was completely covered in sauce.
Texas sausage was really good. Can't really make out the beef to pork ratio, but I feel they could have used more beef. Take my opinion with a grain of salt since I don't know too much about Texas sausage other than my one trip to Dallas.
Mac and cheese was useless. Flavorless, no gooey cheese and the pasta was overcooked.
Corn bread was good. Could have used butter, but I just poured some bbq sauce on it, and it worked out.
Baked beans may have been the highlight. Great smoke, lots of meat mixed in.
You have a choice of Delta, Kansas and XXX sauces. All of which are excellent. I personally like the heat of XXX with a bit of Kansas to even out the vinegar of XXX.
Overall the food wasn't bad. I still can't get over the way they cut the brisket though. Inside is very simple. Counter to order and pay. Tables with plastic utensils and paper towels. Sauces on the side.
On a side note, I was really annoyed that the cashier wouldn't honor the Yelp check-in offer for free "hand cut" fries (which are clearly one of the mass distributed coated fries you can find at many restaurants). He said that someone else was coming in who'd be able to tell him if he can use it. He also said he didn't have her number, and that I should wait. A few minutes later, I hear him on the phone with someone ask about a delivery order that needed to go out (I'm assuming a delivery guy wasn't available). I go up to ask him if he was talking to that person and how he magically had her phone number now. He calls her again and of course he's allowed to bring out the hand cut/ not really hand cut fries.
With a real Texas/Southern offering of brisket, spare and back ribs, Texas sausage, pulled pork, fried chicken, fried catfish, this place started off as a 5 and slowly worked its way down. Fix the whole hand cut french fry debacle, teach your cashiers about your own offers and teach the server how to cut brisket, and you're at a high 4/5. Fix the mac and cheese and pay more attention to your brisket, and this can be a legendary spot.
I wish my first visit didn't have its mishaps; I hope I just caught this place on a bad day. I'll check this place out again, and hopefully things are better.
I purchased a groupon for this place late night when I was so hungry! It was a rash decision but I am from TX and was craving some BBQ so I wanted to give this spot a try. I walked in early about 11:40am. I loved the decor and tables. They had that red checkered picnic tablecloths that really was the perfect touch for a BBQ spot. I ordered the Mikerib sandwich and bourbon BBQ boneless chicken wings. I waited about 10 mins for my food and took my food to go. I got home and dug in, the food was still hot! Well the meat is what I really loved. They don't drench it with sauce which is what good BBQ should be, not having to use any BBQ sauce. The meat was tender and even though it didn't have bone, it definitely tasted like fall off the bone tender! Everything else was not pleasant. I didn't love the bun that came with the sandwich, I expected something more soft inside, this one seemed a little bit on the "day old bread" style. The fries had a good flavor to it but were soggy. Same as the wings, the flavor was awesome but no crisp to it. I highly recommend to get meat by the pound here and don't get anything else. It's good that this BBQ spot has good meat because that's what you should be trying but the rest of the items are lacking. Also get the groupon while it lasts, because it's a great deal! I got a $15 meal for just $7!
