  1. Not fancy inside (or outside) but the food is good, the prices are fair, and the service is on point.

    No sooner had my buddy and I sat down than appeared in front of us a small bowl of pickled and slightly spicy radishes.  Pungent little set they, but tasty as all heck if you ask us.

    For an app, we each had Roti Telur which was accompanied by a bit of curry chicken. Most folks tend to gravitate toward Roti Canai and I'm a fan of that as well but the Telur offers a bit more flavor and the satisfaction that the egg it contains provides. The curry was tasty and not spicy so it will appeal to all palates.

    For our main course, we shared the Hainanese Chicken and Beef Rendang. The chicken was definitely healthy tasting and appeared to have been boiled. Also, it's served cold & accompanied by a tangy soy sauce. I'll have to admit this was my least favorite dish as I don't tend to like cold chicken and because the other items ordered packed a bigger punch of flavor. The beef was definitely tasty and tender as anything, coated in the not-too-thin curry it was made with. Beware that neither of these dishes come with a side of rice. No big deal as we each ordered our own bowl of chicken fried rice at our waiter's recommendation. The rice was perfectly cooked and had enough chicken flavor but not so much that it overpowered or conflicted with the Rendang.

    Seeing as how we packed away a fair amount of food, we skipped dessert. A shame, really, but we know for next time to order a little less on the front side so we can try out some of their desserts.

    Apart from the food, the biggest plus was the service. Our first waiter (I wish I caught his name) was "above and beyond". Very personable, always anticipating when we needed a refill on our drink or new plate to eat from but never intrusive or annoying. Sadly, he had to depart about 2/3 of the way through our meal and there was a little falloff as the remaining waiters weren't quite as aware. Not a complaint so much as an observation as Waiter #1 was just that good. We'll definitely seek him when we come back here.

  2. OK, Pulau Pinang is a small island in Malaysia, but it's a busy city, second close to Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant here is something they could do better. I liked Laksa from here. It's served in a big monster bowl. If you're not a fish eater, don't bother. My husband ordered something that I wouldn't order from any Malaysian restaurant even though I'm from Malaysia. You have to order certain dishes at a Malaysian restaurant, do not order Chinese food here, order what is popular in Malaysia. I'm Malaysian so I know. I find that a few dishes are way too much oil, this is the thing I couldn't handle because back home there's not too much oily stuff in the food I eat from my mom's cooking. Maybe Malaysians eat all the time but not too much oil though. I enjoyed Asam Laksa, the fish soup with udon noodle. My husband wouldn't order this he said. I think the management has changed. It got a B rating but hopefully they will develop.

  3. Glad that this place is under a new management! The previous restaurant, Penang, was not good. The food was bland. At least this place serves more flavorful dishes. The roti canai was good. Can't really screw that up. Delicious kangkung balacan and tofu with seafood. The fish took very long to come – much longer than I would like. I almost canceled it, actually. For $26, I thought I could do without the fish. Nothing special and certainly had less edible parts than what I am used to. The service was okay – not so attentive. No waiter came to refill our tea pots. I probably would go back but definitely not for the fish.

  4. 5 stars for delivery foods. I ordered twice from them on GrubHub and so far it maintains god consistency.  A breakdown as follows:
    – Roti canai: the pastry is huge, with thin layers and fluffy and almost still hot at the time of being delivered. The curry sauce is also appetizing and they never skimp on the amount of chicken.
    – Seafood Tom yum soup: it's s Malaysian/Singaporean version of Tom yum with less spicy ness and a bit tomato flavor. The soup is clear and full of "real" seafoods – not imitation crab meat only. You can find 3-4 shrimps, squid and clam meat in it.
    – Curry me: I only had the soup instead of the noodle. But the coconut curry broth is amazing. Thick, flavorful, but not oily, and you can almost taste the ingredients in it. It's also good if you dip you roti canai or white rice in it!
    – Young coconut: fresh and big at $4.75. I'm glad that they made a pretty cut under a plastic wrap outside to enable you to sip the coconut water without wetting your hands…very good though.

    In total, this rest had become my customary delivery choice. And you can order authentic SEAfood for 2 ppl for $20 something if you live in a free delivery area, which is perfect for a cold day!

  5. We came over on Mother's Day to pick up some items to go. After I ordered, I stepped outside while L waited inside for the food. Staff was really nice and offered him a seat at a table and a cup of tea.

    We ordered a roti canai, Curry Mee, Basil Noodles and Beef Rendang. I also ordered food from another restaurant for my mom. Everyone liked the food. Roti comes in a generous portion. 5 of us were able to share. My mom really liked the Basil Noodles; it was a bit bland for me, but just enough spice for her. She said it's very similar to Cantonese Style Dry Chow Fun, but this comes in a much smaller portion. I should've eaten the Curry Mee while the noodles were fresh, but I was pretty full. The noodles were all stuck together afterwards. The best part is definitely the broth. Really flavorful. Beef Rendang was tender, plenty of sauce. Quality of the meat, not the best, but that's understandable. Still very lean meat which my parents like.
    Since everyone liked the food, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. Prices are decent.. Might be better than the other Malaysian place…

  6. Came here with a party of 7 for lunch. No wait, howevery the entire place only had two high chairs and both were occupied at the time… but luckily one party was leaving soon. The food were good. I order the basil fried noodle which came with shrimp and chicken, egg and veggies. IT was a tad oily but was good. My 1 year old daughter loved it. The indian pancake and curry chicken with potato over rice was really good too. Big portions too.

  7. It was around 10pm and I was looking for a quick delicious dinner. My Yelp buddy had pointed out that Palau closed really late at night. Had to take the takeout home and jump onto a business conference call. My friend presented his latest findings as I spooned salted fish fried rice and roti canai. The food is solid, the fried rice was the consistency I was looking for and the roti was just flaky enough. I still prefer the roti curry from Taste Good around the corner, but I like the prices here at Palau a lot more. This is a Malaysian bang for your buck restaurant. Enjoy.

  8. I think that I might not like Malaysian food, which is the reason I'm still giving them 3 stars. I ordered the Pinang Char Kway Teow for delivery  (stir-fried flat noodles with shrimp, squid, eggs, crispy pork and chili paste). The shrimp, squid, and pork were delicious, but the noodles were really dry while still being sort of harsh in the flavor department. Whatever was in the sauce I didn't enjoy on the noodles, which was fine because they all clumped together in an inedible mess anyway.

    I also ordered the Sambal Udang, which smelt awful as soon as I opened up the container. I'm pretty sure they just used a LOT of fish sauce. I tried to eat it, lots of things don't smell so great but taste wonderful, but this wasn't one of them. I took one bite and tossed it. Again, I think after trying three dishes I'm not going to fault the restaurant, I think I might just not care for the flavors of this cuisine. However, it was part of a lunch special that comes with "soup and two sides of the day". No sides were delivered, and the soup reminded me of a bland, wonton-less Chinese wonton soup, only with big chunks of lightly cooked carrots and potatoes.

    The roti canai though? Yeah, I could drown in that. I ordered the Roti Telur this time too, a pancake filled with egg, onion and green chilies served with that awesome curry chicken potato sauce. This was great. I love roti canai so much that I wish I had an excuse to order from here more often, but as it is I just don't think it's for me.
