Their fried chicken is awesome! Along with the fish and chicken nuggets.
I usually don't buy macaroni and cheese outside but theirs are …decent. Now the potato salad?? SLAMMING!
This is definitely the place to go for good ole southern cooking – when you don't feel like cooking.
So disappointed. My son had a craving for fried chicken. I had a craving for ribs. We agreed on Church's, one of our favorite places. I started calling to place a take out order. But the line was busy. Called for an hour before deciding to jump in my car and head down and order at the counter.
Couple of guys ahead of me when I arrived. I could not hear what they ordered but I did hear they were in for a forty five minute wait. Uh oh….
When I advised that I had been calling for an hour, the lady behind the counter advised they took the phone off the hook because they were too busy. Seriously??
They were out of ribs and a forty minute wait for four pieces of chicken in ninety degree plus weather did not appeal to me. So I went elsewhere.
Sad.
The fried chicken here is great! Crisyp, crunchy, and all around juicy. I just wish we had ordered more!
I had to take away 1 star because our ribs were a tad bit too salty/spicy and chewy. However, their portion sizes are shockingly big, especially compared to NYC. We ordered a full rack of ribs and we did not expect to get a whole tray.
Their prices are spectacular and the service was great. We're definitely coming back!
I am delighted to have gotten to experience this fried chicken. I was happy to have done my research and called ahead for my order. I was told 20 minutes. The drive took me about that long, and my wait for food upon my arrival was under 5 minutes.
I must say the chicken is outstanding. The accompanying rolls are unnecessary and not particularly good. If they raised their prices marginally and threw in some delicious corn bread instead, I'd be psyched! However the rolls may as well not even be included.
The chicken is delicious and obviously prepared fresh. Both light and dark were perfectly seasoned and properly cooked. The skin had a delicious batter, while the meat was juicy and tender.
I was so impressed by the chicken that I could easily see myself going back to sample their other menu items. In fact if the rest of the menu is on this level, I'll have to update my review and bump this to 5 stars.
Like a prisoner on death row getting a reprieve from the Governor-Church's will live on. The day after Judy told me they didn't have a buyer a miracle happened-the day before closing they came to an agreement with a woman to take over. After a week or so away, they'll be training the new owner who expects to re-open in July. Let's hope the skills transfer!
The absolute go to for takeout BBQ and fried chicken in the South Orange/Maplewood area. Collard greens, potato salad and baked beans are their best side dishes. Now the BBQ beef ribs are the way to go here but if you're in the mood for the best fried chicken north of The Carolinas, look no further.
