My family does our own cooking at Thanksgiving but this unusual year we needed a catered turkey. We used Mill Basin Deli because we've had good experiences with their catering in the past, but this time we were disappointed.
We pre-ordered the hot freshly-cooked uncarved turkey rather than the precooked carved turkey that would need reheating. At the promised time our turkey was not ready and we had to wait. At home we saw that we'd been cheated and hadn't gotten the 14 pounds we'd paid for. Three very experienced cooks at our dinner estimated it was only about 10 pounds. Our guests commented that the meat of the turkey was moist and tasty enough but that all the skin was soggy. None of it was the least bit browned or crispy, bummer!
The rest of the food that came with the holiday package tasted like okay diner food. The "stuffing" was very odd–a solid rectangular section of bread kugel that we cut into squares to serve. We enjoyed all the other sides brought by guests much more than the deli's. If we need to cater another holiday dinner, we'll try somewhere else.
The food was great, but the lackluster service makes me bring this down to 2 stars. We were shown to a table in the back and given menus, cole slaw, and pickles. We wait. We wait. We wait. I can see our waitress sitting at a table outside of our area, and I even heard the hostess tell her she had a table in her section. When she didn't bother getting up after 15 minutes , I called over another waitress and asked her if she could take our order. Only then did our waitress bother to get up, and without even an apology, took our drink and food orders at the same time. Don't know if she was bored or just didn't give a shit, but it really overshadowed our time there. I was going to order a couple of appetizers to try but by the time she came over I just wanted to leave and ordered only dinner.
I used to love this place, I really did. I ate here pretty often growing up. Understandably, my tastes may have changed, but at this point I really think I'm over it. In the past year, every time I've gone I've been increasingly disappointed. Their pastrami is still great, and so is their chicken salad. I still love their cole slaw, which I feel like they serve less and less of now than they used to.
I had the Mill Basin Turkey club for lunch on Saturday though, and I think it's getting to be the last straw for me. The turkey was bone-dry, and consisted of a massive wad of sliced turkey stuffed into the lower half of the triple decker. The pastrami (the best part, was in the top half, and was crowned with the tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise. The pastrami is already so moist, it doesn't NEED any fixings. It would have made a lot more sense to make the turkey the top layer. Not only that, but it was served on toasted white bread, which just made the sandwich even dryer. I tried piling on cole slaw and pouring salt over the turkey, and those measures helped a little bit. I really feel like they put a lot less effort in than they used to though, as far as the sandwich's execution. If I just wanted a slab of meat on bread (which I wouldn't) I could buy the meat there and do that at home myself. If you aren't going to make an effort, the sandwich is going to be a disappointment, no matter how tasty the filling might be.
Made the trek to Mill Basin to check out what many consider Brooklyn's best pastrami. The place is classic deli, and looks unchanged from the past. This is a good thing. My partner and I ordered our sandwiches and Dr. Brown's sodas and ate outside. The street, Avenue T, is pleasantly quiet on a Saturday and we enjoyed the relative quiet (compared to Katz's, and my personal favorite David's in Bed-Stuy).
The pastrami itself is tasty but it isn't as juicy as Katz's or David's. I think the rye bread also isn't as flavorful as some of the other delis in New York.
But, for the price ($11.99), very quick service, and ambiance, the Mill Basin Deli is worth a look.
Very awesome kosher deli. This place has delicious pastrami and all the delicatessen classics. The restaurant is well run with friendly quick service. You must try some pastrami, pickles, split pea soup, all the different knishes and the french fries. Last but not least you must have a hot dog. They are just insane! Big fan of this place.
We ordered from Mill Basin Deli Saturday afternoon through GrubHub, starving as usual.
Before I talk about the food, our order did not arrive on time. More like 20 minutes later, but GrubHub did offer us a $5 credit towards our next order. So that was nice of them.
We ordered potato chips (crispy latkas) a smoked turkey wrap, soups, perogies, hot dogs and some other small eats. I'd rate the food at a 6.5. It was good and I'd order again so I can try some other eats but it's pretty basic and of course deli style. The hot dog was advertised as huge, but was not so huge at all. The soup could have used some more spices but it was still hearty and delicious.
I did read a couple of reviews talking about the service being sub par but I only dealt with Grubhub and besides the delivery being late, my order was good.
I'm looking forward to trying some other Deli eats in the future.
It had been many years since I ate at this kosher deli. My family is from the area, and we ordered from here from time to time. Back as a kid, I never really appreciated Jewish food. Not so today. On a recent nostalgia trip to a few places nearby, my girl and I made this our lunch stop. It looks like a typical, low-key Jewish deli. The only item of note are the various paintings by Chinese artists. This is interesting, as the place doubles as an art gallery (smart idea). They also have a nice, big party room located next door as well under the name the Peach Pit. Our server was very pleasant and efficient, even helping some of the elderly guests to get up and sit down; on the contrary, the Indian bus boy working that day was annoying enough that eventually I just told him to leave us alone. That aside, there isn't much like drinking a Dr. Brown's black cherry in a Jewish deli that, thankfully, can still cook the old school way.
We started off with an order of latke chips and matzoh ball soup. They were crunchy with soft potato innards, and greasy without being too much so. Pretty damn perfect with some applesauce. The matzoh ball soup was a sizable portion with a great matzoh ball, although I typically prefer more shmaltz in my soup. For accoutrements, their cole slaw and pickles (particularly full sours) were great. We split a pastrami on rye for our main, which was tasty. The pastrami was melt in your mouth fresh with flavor to spare. A little lighter on the spicing and marbling could've been a but better, but a great sandwich nevertheless. I just wish they had better rye bread; their homemade mustard (great) was needed to rectify this. All of that, with some leftover latkes and part of the sandwich to go, was a pretty epic lunch.
Great to see my old neighborhood holding down the Jewish deli tradition. With Dolly's now a few storefronts down, this is a block I will be returning to again soon. And with Adelman's now gone, this is one of only a dozen delis at most left in Brooklyn. Patronize it, as the food deserves it!
Came into Mill Basin Deli for lunch. The food was amazing, the only thing I didn't like was that the broth for the matzah ball soup was a little bland, though the actual matzah ball was so good.
The portions of food that they give are really big, and the prices are great. The only other negative thing I have to say is that the service isn't great. The waitress doesn't come over unless you call her over, which was annoying.
