  1. I LOVED my first experience here. This is a hipster Haitian American cafe. Friendly vibe, with lovely waitstaff. Great, casual look. And of course, food was delicious and affordable, with plenty of vegetarian options.

The Legume Plate ($15) is stewed vegetables. I ordered it straight up, although it's possible to add meat for $2 more. There was plenty to eat.

We also had a side Djon Djon (Haitian Black Rice) for $5, which was really good rice with black beans. Note: It's pronounced "john-john;" I learned the hard way.

I was tempted to order the $7 Pain Patate (sweet potato bread pudding). It's supposedly very popular and very sweet. But the meal left me stuffed. Next time!

  2. Meh. Im super critical of haitian food.  Everytime i eat it,  i needs to taste like someone grandma coooked it. I ordered the fritai which i don't eat often but i usually  enjoy when i have it.  The serving size is small indeed.  But i was okay with it. The food didn't take long to come out. It looked great. The yucca fries were sticks. The plantains was rough. The akra was good i must say.  And omg the griot was tasty lol they just didn't add those few fatty pieces that really add to the flavors.

Well I really love the spin on the cuisine offerings. I will definitly come back to try the rice… you cant eff that up right.  Lol also all types of rice should have the option of sos pwas even the black rice. I dont understand why i cant enjoy my black rice and sos pwas without being judged lol

I will come back because i here poly alum owns this! #represent

  3. I came here with great expectations, alas, they were dashed.  They are getting 3 stars for the service.

The place itself is super cute. Light and Airy. Really interesting paintings and photos on the wall. The table and chairs are fun, a mix of wood and iron. I like the idea of the market set up in the back, but I think it would have been more interesting if there more Haitian products back there–I think they only had Haitian coffee. I can get cornflakes anywhere.  The service is great, really friendly and patient.

The food. The Menu itself looks wonderful. I love the idea of turning Haitian food (I am a 1st gen Haitian-American) on an angle and making less mysterious and accessible to other people.

    We ordered the following:

Mixed Greens and Watercress Salad:  Pro- The dressing was AMAZING!
Con: The salad was supposed to have roasted beets and cranberries.  The beets were not roasted and there were no cranberries.
Fritai: Fried app plate. It was just ok.
    Codfish Sandwich
    Griot (Pan fried pork)
Tasso Cabrit: Cabrit is Goat, however, the dish had an odd mix of goat and turkey.

The entire meal was under whelming and under seasoned.

Our waitress was very hospitable, and when we explained about what meal she offered to switch out the turkey for the goat when we said no, she offered us a free desert which we accepted. The Pain Patate (Sweet potato pudding)- was great and we enjoyed it.

Perhaps they were having an off day, but I was disappointed.  I really want this place to be successful, so I'll be back.

  4. I tend to crave Haitian food from time to time so I'm happy that this place is in my neighborhood.

The ambience that this restaurant sets off is cutesy. A bit of a rustic flavor with the wooden furniture but also so warm and delightful you don't ever want to leave. They play some amazing African music that gets you in the groove. I may have to bust out with some dance moves next time. The staff consists of young, energetic, and what seems to be a happy group of people. The service was great! I was greeted by a sweet young lady who let me express my joy about getting my puppy back. She was so caring and attentive I felt like I knew her for years. I ordered the appetizer fritai which included goat, sweet potato fries, akra and plaintains. WAY TOO MUCH FOOD FOR ONE! The food was really good to me. It could use a little more seasoning but at the moment I was so excited to eat I didn't care. I also had the Haitian patty which was good.

I can see myself coming back here. Their menu is extensive and the price is reasonable to me at least. Some ppl. mentioned that the portions are not that big but I didn't get a meal. Next time I hope I'll have an appetite for a full meal and hopefully when it comes it's definitely enough food to satisfy me.

  5. Had brunch her a few weeks ago, a Haitian Artist was displaying her art work there and that was what brought me to this place. I have enjoyed both the art and the brunch, the food was flavorful. I loved the griot omelette and would have it again. There was small finger food offered for the event, one being the sweet potato fries which they used what we Haitians call patate to make…this was new to me and it was amazing. Came home and tried it myself and loved it, I never would have thought it. Not to mention I was excited to find that they sold Askanya chocolate there.

  6. Recommendation: a charming neighborhood spot for a quick lunch (try the Griot sandwich!) – probably worth a trip from other parts of Brooklyn.

Food: There was a really high level of execution on both the Codfish sandwich and the Griot sandwich (had never had this before, a Caribbean mix of spices on pulled pork).  Sweet potato fries were excellent as well – they left the skin on which was a nice touch.  The soy latte I had early in the morning was rich and well prepared.  Incredibly high value on the sandwiches (around or under $10) so I recommend starting with those.

Service: Each encounter I've had with an employee was incredibly friendly (given, we are still in week 1).  The wait has never terribly long for coffee at the counter or for food service.  Servers made several checks to make sure that my food was good and whether I needed anything.  They seem to really have procedures down–already running on all cylinders.

Ambiance: This space gets a lot of light which is great (hopefully will not be drafty come Jan 2016), there is some very charming wooden furniture and a few paintings on the wall.  It feels like a place I could bring my mom or bring my kid.

Overall: this does not feel like a pop-up or a first effort–Grandchamps knows what it is and what it is doing and is worth your time.
