Jimmy's is laid out like a buffet, but you don't get to scoop the items yourself. When you walk in behind the glass there are probably 20 dishes to choose from ranging from Chinese classics to more Szechuan based and even some Vietnamese. $7 gets you 4 items and a soup, which isn't bad in the least. It's a significant amount of food, for real. The main issue here, is that not all items are created equal. Some are solid, others you wouldn't feed to a pigeon. For $7, you might be happy with this hit-or-miss style of lunch, but I'll probably pass.
Bonus: Lots of outdoor tables to eat right next door at Baruch College.
Wow, this place is the bomb. Seeing the selection of food here took me back to my days in Singapore, trying to decide which meats and vegetables I wanted for my meal. There's all kinds of authentic Chinese entrees – spare ribs, spicy chicken, egg and tomato, steamed chicken with ginger, braised chicken, sweet and sour pork, mapo tofu… I'm sold. It's a lot of food for $7 in the day and $6 after 7 pm. You can also choose between white rice and brown rice, and you can get an order of egg drop soup or spicy pepper soup or chicken broth.
I've had Jimmy's House twice in two days and I *may* go back on the third!
Surprisingly a good place for Chinese food!
This takeout place is perfectly situated next to Baruch College so it is perfect for the CUNY students and it is only 2 blocks from my office.
As I was walking to the place I notice a line of people from my company heading for the place too!
The place is small with only a couple of tables & chair so try grabbing a chair & table on 25th St. where they closed the street off and made it a public space with chairs, tables and umbrellas.
So far I only get the Lunch Box Special.
For just $6.50 you get to pick 4 items with rice (white or brown). Rate it 3.5/5.
The food is decent and not too greasy if you pick your items carefully.
They change the items everyday so you won't be bored.
The prices is good for this area.
There is a menu for other food which I will try next time.
I can't believe i haven't reviewed this place yet. Been coming here since the college days as it's right next to Baruch. when u go during lunch time there's always a line tho it moves fairly quickly. It's a small Chinese take out place where they r known for offering 4 dishes with rice and a soup for almost $7. Huge portion and good food, the folks who works there are very nice too.
It was a long day at work and I couldn't shake the idea of a nice bowl chicken lo mien. I was walking down 3rd looking for a new Chinese spot when I noticed a run down little shack with faded mandarin in the window. Despite this, I saw two things I liked: an 'A' heath inspector rating and bunch of Asians eating inside (I trust their judgement). The inside of the restaurant was cluttered with handwritten mandarin signs and local business ads. People come to NYC to enjoy cultural food. However, most cultural food will not have an expensive LED sign out front, 400 yelp reviews or a place to check-in on Instagram. If you're looking for an AUTHENTIC Chinese/Vietnamese cuisine, this is the place.
Looking for an outdoor venue to enjoy a beautiful first day of Summer on 6/21, I opted to do take out at Jimmy's House. This small and very casual takeout joint buried in the belly of Baruch College does a booming business, mostly, to my eye, due to the young collegians looking for a cheap and filling lunch option. It is a short walk from my workplace.
Although you can get a conventional Chinese lunch special with soup, Jimmy's also offers 4 selections from the bins along the front counter, plus choice of rice and soup, for $6.95. The nice young lady at the counter was helpful in explaining the various choices and the particulars of their buffet system I chose Fried Chicken, Bok Choy, Broccoli and Shrimp(with EYES attached!!). Since others occupied the tables in the street, I sat along the "ledge" near the south side of the 25th Street sidewalk
As others have implied, this is "fill your belly on the cheap" food which serves that purpose and nothing more. As such, Jimmy's will make a cameo appearance in my lunch rotation from time to time.
Jimmys house gives a lot of food for the price. You get 4 items with rice and a soup for only 7 dollars.
I usually get fried rice with eggplants, general tsos chicken, salt and pepper pork, and tofu. The soup is between hot and sour soup or egg drop soup.
The drawback of this restaurant is that some items may be cold, lack flavor, or over cooked. So it can be very hit or miss but you'll get a huge meal.
This small place near Baruch, discovered by accident, offers four items over rice for $6.50, or $5.50 after 7, and improbably manages to fare better than most similar Chinatown spots in both quantity and quality.
I got a spicy potato and pork dish, spicy chicken, a tofu item and a chopped-up thing with ingredients including pork and maybe bitter melon but I'm not sure. The tofu was far better than average, with strong texture and dare I say meatiness. The actual chicken was more of a supporting player but the brown sauce in which it resided was addictive and went well with the other items.
