Mamoun’s Falafel

“Chicken, hummus, shish-kebab, oh my.”

“Mamoun's serves the best lamb shwarma I've ever had, hands down (flavorful, succulent, and plentiful lamb in a spongy pita pocket).”

“I lived on Washington Square West for a year in college and I went to this place for falafel at least 3-5x/week.”

  1. One of the oldest falafel places in the city (since 1974 I believe)

By every definition this is a hole in the wall – decor/seating is pretty dismal, but when the food is this good, well who cares.  Just to takeout.

I had the falafel and it was crispy and soft at the same time.  Perfectly cooked deliciousness that allowed the chickpea flavour and the spices to shine through.  Located not to far from Washington Square park this is a perfect place to hit up and then chill with your food at the park!

  2. If you ever want Shawarma in NYC as bad as the Avengers did at the end of the first movie, Mamoun's is the place that will hit the spot.

Very small hole in the wall. Really tight inside with limited seating. It gets really hot and stuffy in there. The food comes out pretty fast. Service was good.

Shawarma Sandwich – $6.50 – It was full of spice and flavor and the meat was super tender. All the toppings and tahini mix perfectly with the shawarma. Only negative was that the hot sauce was not spicy enough.

Falafel – $2 – So fluffy and you get that chickpea flavor. Fried perfectly. Very happy it was moist and not dry. Dipped in the tahini and hot sauce or by itself, it was really good.

So good when you are hungry and a 100 times better for a drunk snack! One of the best cheap eats you can find in NY.

  3. Literally the most delicious shwarma I've ever had. I've been coming here for 7 years now and can confidently say that eveything on the menu is delicious- from the falafel to the lamb shwarma to the hummus. Every time I visit NYC, this hole in the wall is a must visit. The staff is always nice. The hot sauce is ghost pepper-blow your pants off hot, so approach with caution but definitely try!  The kitchens clean and the foods delicious. I wish we had a Mamouns in Boston. I would die happy!!

  4. Mamoun's definitely has authentic, top notch falafel. If I had ordered just a side of falafel, odds are this would be a five star rating, but I have a quarrel with the falafel sandwich that I ordered. No Arabic pickles, no pickled turnips? Come on Mamoun's! These are essential to any Arabic sandwich! It really bothers me when authentic places don't have the traditional toppings for the sandwich. Instead Mamoun's offers tomatoes and lettuce in the sandwich, both of which I omitted. This left me with a plain sandwich, but at least they had a well made tahini sauce and some good pita bread.

Next time I return to Mamoun's, I'll be sticking with the side of falafel as opposed to the sandwich, but there is no denying that I was still a fan. The falafel here is no joke.

  5. Tasty but pricy. I got the Falafel/shawarma combo plate and at $15, I was expecting something mind-blowing. It was alright. I definitely liked the shawarma more than the falafel. Even though it's rotisserie meat, it was still very moist while retaining a great texture. This was my first time trying falafel and all I can say is that I'm not a big fan of it. For those like me who have never tried it before, it sort of tastes like a bland and grainy meatball (no meat of course). It's also fried so unlike a meatball, it's also a little oily on the outside. The meat and falafels come over a bed of salad, which I found to be alright. White sauce on top was delicious!

Would I come back? Maybe. But probably only for the shawarma sandwich. Even though it's called Mamoun's Falafel, I'll pass on the falafels next time. Extra points for the cashier who was super nice!

  6. $7 schawarma & falafel sandwich = yum

Flavorful, filling, wish there was a little more lettuce to make me feel a bit healthier, love the creamy sauce.

    Was a little thirsty after…

overall, an affordable and satisfying lunch in the area. Side note, I can see how this would be good late night drunk food too

  7. How is this place so good? How do they do it? I have been here twice in the last week; if I had disposable money, I'd probably be here every day. No, for every meal.

Their falafel isn't too crispy. It's not overly flavorful. It's not too many in one sandwich. IT'S PERFECTION.

I always like getting the simple sandwich with lettuce tomatoes and onions with tahini… oh and do not forget that amazing hot sauce they have!

  8. I tried to like Mamoun's.  I tried three times.  I'm now vowing to never go again after my third bad experience.  The only decent thing here is the Falafel.  All the sides and condiments are too salty/heavy and the shwarma meat has been unappealing both visually and taste-wise.  The BF & I barely got halfway through our plates last weekend (upsetting for him, since he used to be Mamoun's biggest fan).  Needless to say, the food here will also send you straight to the bathroom with a stomachache.

There are PLENTY of better options for middle eastern food in Manhattan.  No more Mamoun's for me.
