Paulie Gee’s

“The hot honey lends the perfect amount of sweetness and kick to the seemingly basic Hellboy, which is anything but.”

“We ordered four pizzas between four people : the Greenpointer, Hellified Porkpie White, Feel Like Bacon Love, and Hellboy.”

“My party also raved about the Greenpointer and Cherry Jones – both of which looked like they belonged in a gourmet magazine.”

  1. Delicious!! Definitely made my top 3 favorite pizza  places (the others being robertas and best pizza). We've been meaning to come forever but the line is always so long. We were finally seated right away on a Friday night because we ran over as soon as they opened at 6pm. I would highly recommend this tactic to those of you who have been meaning to come and haven't been able to due to the wait — the food will be worth it. We ordered the hellboy, ricotta be kidding me and the hot honey ice cream Sunday for dessert. The hellboy was our fave. It was basically a pepperoni pizza with hot honey lined under the cheese. I liked it more than the bees sting from Robertas but both are very good.

All in all would highly recommend. As an extra plus Paulie Gee was hanging around today, though it seems like he does this quite often, going from table to table talking to the customers.

  2. Packed on a Saturday night. Hostess said the following, "Call me in an hour and 45 minutes. Don't call me before then."

    No, thank you.

  3. We've literally flown across the country to enjoy his pizza. It's that good!

Walking in, the aroma of pizza cooking in a brick oven hits your nose.
This is about time my stomach starts to growl.

The vibe is flowing with positive energy, and the low lighting is flattering & sexy.

The bar to the left is where you can order a beverage while you wait.  They have a decent beer selection.
Wait times vary, but it's usually not as long as anticipated, and well worth the effort.

Everyone, including the servers, seem happy to be there.

Paulie Gee is the utmost host. He's always found time to come to our table with suggestions, stories, and the occasional limoncello, (his recipe of the celebratory cocktail).

Talking with him, I've gathered that he makes the vegan pizza for the people, or demand for it, but he didn't seem interested in the cause.

The funky bathrooms can be a challenge to use when you've had one too many!

    VEGAN Pies we LOVE

    Simply Red
Vegan Tomato Sauce with Tomatoes, Olive Oil. Vidalia Onions, Garlic, Basil, Salt and Pepper

    Vegan Daniela Spinaci
Baby Spinach, Olive Oil, Fresh Sliced Garlic, Mild Aleppo Chili Oil and Sea Salt

    In Ricotta Da Vegan
Vegan Tomato Sauce, House Made Vegan Sausage, Post-oven House Made Cashew Ricotta Dollops, Baby Arugula and Extra Virgin Olive Oil

With many return visits, we've yet to have a negative experience.

There has been noise over the years of Paulie Giannone opening a Portland outpost, but it has yet to materialize.

Meanwhile, I'll dream of his pizza.

  4. Very good pizza. Per usual. Just crazy how long the waits are.

It'd been a while since my last visit to Paulie Gee's in Greenpoint, but I actually recently made it out to the Paulie Gee's in Columbus, Ohio. Yeah, Ohio. After being reminded how great the pizza was, decided to make the trek out from Manhattan to Greenpoint for date night. We managed to get there right at the peak dinner time, so we ended up waiting for a while.

The Hellboy and the hellified porkpie white remain my favorites, as well as the Ricky Ricotta. There's just something about the hot honey, and it's just balanced really well, not too sweet or spicy, and just the right consistency. The hellified porkpie white really takes the cake (pie) though, since I like really enjoy the richness of the white pie. The Ricky Ricotta was pretty creamy, and nicely contrasted with the arugula and sausage. And the crust! Just the right amount of chew and crispiness, enhanced by the fact that it's baked in a wood-fired oven.

Service was pretty standard, and kept the refills coming pretty quickly. The prices are a little more expensive for the area, but the pies are worth it. I'd just make sure to avoid the lines when you can.

I'd say I'd want Paulie Gee's to come out to Manhattan, but I can only imagine what the lines would be like if they did. For now, I don't mind going out to Brooklyn for that Hellified porkpie.

  5. I hate writing this review because Paulie Gee's was presented as like the best pizza in town.
I, my friends am a self-proclaimed PIZZA-HOLIC and as I am about to be completely unpopular, I thought it was the worst I had ever had.

We went to Paulie Gee's with a group of three and there was about an hour wait on a Sunday evening, which I didn't think was too bad. We scooted down to Pencil Factory Bar for a quick drink prior to being seated.

We were seated promptly upon return and were given menus. Our table ordered and split the Cheek Corea salad which I thought was super delicious and in hindsight, I wish I would have had more of it.

We decided to order two pizzas, the Ricky Ricotta and the Hellified Pork Pie White.

The pizza came out separately and we started on the Hellified Pork Pie White first…it was terrible! I took one bite and chose to wait for the Ricky Ricotta. This pizza also left a lot to be desired.

Basically my complaints are as follows, the crust of the pizza did not taste coal fired it tasted burnt and the center of the crust of the pizza was so thin it was almost soggy and really difficult to eat it you were picking up a piece.

I unfortunately just did not like it. The other two individuals in my party seemed pretty pleased but no one was blown away. I had one piece of the Ricky Ricotta and then gave up.

The manager/owner? was kind enough to make his way around and he did ask how everything was since I was the only one displeased I saved my feelings.

Basically, I won't be back and I am still on the hunt for the elusive "best pizza in NYC"!!!

  6. At first, the road to Paulie Gee's seems off the beaten path, but I assure you this pizza place has blazed a path of its own. The only dilemma you'll have here is asking yourself how many pizzas can you realistically eat? After dinner here, you'll realize the answer is quite a lot.

The recommendation is to order a pizza per person here, which seems abundant. But the size of the pizzas are perfect for sharing–very thin, airy crusts, and a variety of flavors to test your tastebuds. Our favorites were vast and plenty, but we loved the Ricotta Be Kidding me, Hellboy, and the Prince Harry Classic. I would remiss if I did not mention the Cherry Jones with sweet bites of cherry, the Arugula Schmoogula (which in my mind, totally doubles as healthy because there's arugula on it) and the Brisket Five-O–which I consider a must for BBQ lovers. You'll have trouble convincing yourself not to finish all the crust, but if it wasn't delicious enough already, ask for a side of Mike's Hot Honey to dip it in. This kicking sauce is such a game changer, I bought the $12 bottle of it. I am convinced you could dip tree branches into Mike's hot honey, and it would be tasty.

If you come here with a bunch of health fanatics who insist they need a salad to eat with all this gluten and carbs, get the Cheek Corea salad. They can have the green stuff on the bottom–YOU can eat that amazing oven-crisp Berkshire pork on top. If this delicious topping was offered on the salads I force myself to eat during workday lunches, I would be a changed woman.

The amazing meal here is only sweetened (literally and figuratively) by their Limoncello shots and their Hot honey sundae. So what that you just had 7 pizzas? There's no turning back. GO FOR THE GOLD. There is little to be regretted here at Paulie Gee's.

  7. Paulie Gee's is annoying. We arrived 30 minutes before it opened and weren't even the first people on line. There's no list, instead we had to rely on the hostess word that we would be allowed back in after a drink.

When do sit down, it's in a cavernous room that got louder after the owner appeared at our table. We were seated right next to a box that operated the system, it jutted out in a way that one person was constantly on the verge of getting poked.

I suppose some people might find the perfunctory table side visits to be charming, but ours was so rehearsed, so uninterested in the actual diners that I thought it distracted from the  meal. The whole enterprise is curiously precious for a place that opened after I moved to the neighborhood. This isn't Peter Luger, where at least some of the snobbery can be defended in the name of upholding a tradition.

But whatever, the pizza is fantastic. We ordered one pie per person, which for a party of five is too many. We finished them anyway, reliving of ourselves of the need to eat again for the rest of that day and a good portion of the next.

The Hometown BBQ pizza with its sauce and hunks of meat was a particularly fiendish creation. Usually the toppings at these top-tier pizzerias are subtle and leavy. There's plenty of that here but it was real pleasure to see those protein pies on sale at mall foo courts elevated to the gourmet level.

The drink list could be better, I'm not sure who has room for dessert and again the music is too loud, but this is an absolutely unmissable place in North Brooklyn.

  8. New York probably takes its pizza more seriously than anywhere else in the world.  I'm sure there are 7 or 8 people reading this right now that would be willing to shiv a guy for saying something bad about their favorite slice.

With that in mind, Paulie Gee's is a pizza lover's pizza place.  They make Neapolitan style pizzas with an oven shipped in from Naples and lovingly reassembled by small, Italian elves.  From this oven, comes perfectly leopard-spotted pizzas with just the right amount of bouncy chewy dough.

To top the pizza, there's a lovingly curated selection to choose from so don't you dare ask for substitutions.  Lucky for you whether you're a vegan, vegetarian, white/red pie lover, averse to spice, meat lover, or whatever!  There's at least one pie on the menu* that will make you say, "hmmm…".

My personal favorites are the Mo' Cheeks ($16, has guanciale and is perfect with the pickled onions) and Ricotta Be Kidding Me ($17, with tons of meat topped with adorable dollops of cottage cheese).  I've only ever had 1 pizza there that wasn't stellar and I won't tell you which one because you'll definitely judge me for choosing it in the first place.

The atmosphere at Paulie Gee's is great.  It's quintessential Brooklyn.  Think dark unfinished wood walls with an eclectic collection of tables made from reclaimed wood, music consisting of a mixture of jazz, rock, and anything but top 40s.

What always makes my night is that the ACTUAL Paulie Gee walks around and talks to EVERYONE.  It doesn't matter if Keri Russell** is sitting right next to you, he will still come by and have a 5-20 minute conversation with you and your table.

My only complaint is how popular this place is.  They've stopped making pizzas to go and still, the wait is crazy.  I've never been able to get a table in less than 45 minutes unless it was late at night.  I guess that's not a bad problem to have.  I also kind of wish they would get a full liquor license and take that creative pizza combo creating mind into the cocktail realm.  I mean…Mike's Hot Honey + Whiskey?  Maybe?
