Pretty average slice. Nothing spectacular but nothing terrible either. Maybe I missed it but there didn't seem to be any lunch specials like 2 slices and a drink for $6 or anything like that. A lot of places do that, they don't seem to, so meh. For a small buffalo chicken slice and a mushroom slice it was $9, not worth it.
Pizza by the slice in FiDi is tough to come by, no doubt there. But this is just average ole' pizza. I think the higher rating is mostly by tourists and the lack of by-the-slice joints in the area.
Overall, I could take or leave it. Wouldn't be my first choice nor my last.
Good New York pizza. Basically a classic slice, which is sadly harder to find these days. If I'm in the neighborhood I would totally come back.
TIP: it's next to Leonidas Bagels around the corner from the front of 3 Hanover Square.
OMG very good pizza. I opted to get the jalapeno and bacon pizza. It was so freaking good. There was a perfect amount of bacon and jalapeno. It was spicy and delicious. The slice of pizza was $3! Perfect location for a quick bite to eat.
You're in NY. You know that at the top of the foodie to-do list is to eat pizza. You know. Standing on a street corner with a thin crust folded up, you're hunched over so not to spill grease on your Boss suit, hailing a taxi at the same time. Maybe even leg sweeping a would-be pickpocket.
Well, I almost accomplished that. I aimed too high and kicked the pickpocket in the knee tearing his MCL….. KIDDING!
Yes we got an amazing NYC pizza experience! Thin crisp crust. Not greasy! No we didn't have to stand on the corner to do so. Why? Because we found Underground Pizza!
Located in the Financial District this place made our NY pizza dreams come true! You are immediately cheerfully greeted by employees as you stand in front of the case making your selections. The nice gentleman was patient with us as we perused even though a line was forming. He described each pizza we asked about with a smile on his face. They had many to choose from so this took some time. Each slice is ample sized.
Both My Love and a daughter got a Margherita. Fresh mozzarella. Basil. Tomato slice. Perfect according to my daughter.
My other darling got a sausage slice. She is developing her Yelpiness so she knew immediately to judge the meaty pizza on greasiness of which she said there was none! Pizza-Domino-Papa-Costco this place was not.
I wanted veggies on mine but couldn't decide between a square spinach & artichoke slice or a baked eggplant & spinach slice. FUC it, I got both. Yes, the shadow of my a$$ weighs 15 pounds. Again an amazing crust. I would have thought all the moisture from the veggies would have softened it but nope! There was plenty of spinach/artichoke in each bite. And the eggplant brought tears of joy to my cherubic cheeks.
Dear Pagan Pizza Deity in the Oven in the Sky, thanks for such a wondrous find!
I have NO idea how Underground Pizza has 4-stars.
I mean it's not terrible, but not great either – just Average pizza, in my opinion. I think the reason for the higher rating is because there are so few pizza-by-the-slice options in FiDi.
Just look at my pics and you'll see what I mean.
They use your basic Hormel pepperoni (not like the old world pepperoni they use at Adrienne's nearby), so the slice is extra greasy. Normally I don't mind that, but the problem is the flour they use doesn't get crisp when cooked, even when they leave it in the oven for a while, so you end up with a floppy slice of pizza.
And since it's loaded with grease, the cheese, pepperoni, etc, slides off the slice when you pick it up…you can see it in my pics. I thought maybe I just had a bad batch, so I came again, and had the same problem, so it's just their pizza.
The problem is, there are no other pizza options nearby, except for Pranzo or Justino's, but both are only 3-Stars as well. Adrienne's is awesome, but they don't do slices, only whole pizzas.
So like I said, the pizza's not bad, but not great either, and if you're craving a Slice, then this one of your only options in FiDi.
And I guess when you have nothing good to compare it to, then it'll do.
Pizza is pretty good!! I didn't know what to expect, but I'm on a mission to try as many different pizza places as possible. Starting with my neighborhood. I was with my sister so we ordered two pies. We got the fresh mozzarella pie (which was just ok), and then got one with mushrooms and peppers. That one was really good and I saved some of each for later. They were both good as left overs, but I think I'll be ordering pizzas with different toppings instead of the plain mozzarella. I will definitely order again from here and I'm glad this place is very close.
I've walked by this place a thousand times, but only eaten here a couple of times, for a reason. Their pizza not only looks bad, but it is completely lacking in any flavor whatsoever, and it's really sort of drab and dismal and depressing inside. Not for me, no thanks, nuh uh.
O M G………..grandma slice! delicious………it was about 2pm and I was starving during my walk around downtown… I stopped here..been wanting to try it out and am sooo glad I did..
Plain grandma slice…soft chewy crust with a bit of crisp bite to it….enough sauce, perfect amount of cheese… $3 for a meal… that's awesome. I will be back!
