Love the pizza at Motorino. The crust was great, and the ingredients are fresh. Was a big fan of the brussells sprouts pizza and the mushroom pizza. The meatball appetizer was also a win.
I came here last night with two friends after seeing Motorino's brussels sprouts pizza all over Instagram.
IMO, the brussels sprouts pizza does live up the hype- it's amazing- but I couldn't eat more than a couple slices because the flavor was so rich/unique.
We also ordered the burrata and the soppressata pizza. The pizza was amazing but the burrata was drenched in olive oil. I'm not sure why that was necessary because burrata is amazing as-is. I only had a few bites because I wasn't a fan of the way it was served, but that is forgivable.
The waitress was friendly and eager to share her favorite pizzas. All around, a good experience.
I really liked it here! Summer is my time to explore new pizza places and Motorino was my first stop of this summer. This was a last minute pick to satisfy my friend's craving for pizza and mine for Italian. I'm willing to compromise when it comes to really good food like this. We had the Margherita (I always order one wherever I go. I used to think this made me boring, but I've come to realize a good margherita is the mark of a solid foundation and a place that respects food) and the Soppressata Piccante. Now this is the funny part of my review. Neither my friend nor I actually eat Soppressata. BUT for the sake of ease of ordering we ordered that and picked off the meat. Sometimes, it's just easier that way. When you grow up not eating sausage or hams you kinda just do stuff like that. You also adjust your taste buds to understand that the dish was prepared with a major ingredient intended and you just bastardized it and should be respectful when reviewing. So I am. That pizza was awesome. Even with me picking off the main ingredient it was delicious. If they made just a "Piccante" I would throw down with that. I like the Marghertia as well. LOVED the dough. I absolutely loved it. My friend said he would have liked it a little thicker and crunchier. I would have killed him if he had asked for that. This is the quintessential pizza crust debate. So, if for nothing else, Motorino instantly provides dinner conversation. We sat and argued over this issue for half the meal. And it's not like we haven't had this discussion before. We also discussed the inclusion of the egg in the beet salad. And I wasn't even eating the beet salad. So you see plenty to chat about on even a quiet weekday meal. In the end we agreed that we loved the meal. Admittedly, I didn't care for the frizzante wine. Were I to do it over, I would have probably passed on it. That said, it was a decent pairing with the meal even though it was more vino than frizzante. Smile and be friendly when giving your name and you are likely to get a nice table quickly (also you should always do this in general because it's called being a good person). Motorino is pretty good in my book. Next time I'm in the neighborhood I'm trying something new and going in on some of the side dishes too.
Really a 3.5 stars for me. Not that the pizza was bad, it was pretty good but I don't know if I can call this place one of the "best pizzas in NYC" according to a few internet lists.
Appetizers were about average. The meatballs were just ok for me.
We did get the brussel sprouts pizza that was popular here. I liked it overall. The crust is thin and good although somewhat burnt but I suppose it is from the coal fire oven. Not oily at all, has a bit of olive oil on top. I do want to try their margarita pizza that I have heard about next time I come.
Good pizza, so-so appetizers. Worth a trip but too much hype compared to what was delivered in my opinion.
A strong follower of all city food instagrams and the Thrillist blog, I had seen Motorino around a lot. It wasnt until after I went here that Thrillist named it the best pizza place in the East Village but I don't reject that label.
Its SUPER tiny, only about 10 tables or so and quaintly dark- good for a date night stop. You can see the open table from about any seat and the staff was super attentive and friendly. I got the meatball appetizer and they were GREAT- huge and covered in cheese, which is never a bad thing. A friend and I shared the margharita pizza and had buffalo mozzarella which is a gift to this lovely planet we have inhabited. We also split the tiramisu dessert and it was AMAZING. I spent a month in Italy and this was top quality. AND to top it all off, those 3 plates were only $30.
If you love neopolitan pizza, add this to your list.
Good stuff.
Tried their Brussels Sprouts and Margherita Pizza. Placed our order to go.
There is little seating inside. Service was quick and friendly enough. Our order was ready in no time. They packed our pizzas neatly and we were on our merry way. The crust has a nice char with a perfect chew. The sauce was on point. Smooth, juicy, and slightly sweet. The toppings were of good quality and evenly distributed. Flavors were all there.
Glad we checked this place out.
So much disappointment surrounding Motorino. I heard great places about this pizza spot, even from the West Coast, so when I finally got the opportunity to try it…. expectations were pretty high.
The alici is not worth it. I heard so much hype abut it but it didn't deliver at all. It was a special pizza that you don't really see anywhere else. The flavors didn't work and the ingredients weren't fresh. I just tasted like someone threw ingredients on something that resembled a flatbread and tried to call it a pizza. Hard no.
We also got the roasted mortadella which was something that I easily could have made on my own. It tasted more like spam than a delicious Italian meat.
The vibes are overwhelmingly East Village. It's a small, trendy spot where you can be having dinner with one person but really be having dinner with the tables surrounding you. The vibes are cool but it doesn't make up for the average food.
If you are here, I would go for a red sauce pizza. Pass the alici at all costs.
Another solid spot for the classic wood fired Napoletana in NYC…
Loved their perfect wine for a pizza suggested the front page of menu (its a red and sparkling blend, bit sweet n dry). Can't go wrong with the margherita or the white pizza with mushrooms. The brussel sprouts app was well done, not outstanding.
Its a small place with at least half hour wait on most days. The service is fast even though they have so many deliveries going out. Will definitely stop by for a classic without the wait.
