  1. This place is right up the block from my old art in South Slope. If it had only been here before we moved, I may have never left. It's the perfect cheesy dive bar. It's everything I want in a bar. Fun, unpretentious and you get a pizza WITH EVERY DRINK! And it's actually good. Bartenders are nice and accommodating, great to chat up. American Cheez, I love you.

  2. Craft beer reasonably priced with a complimentary pizza upon your order? Yes! Also, American Cheez is a super geeky bar that harbors a love from horrible amazing movies starring Pauly Shore, The Almighty Arnold Schwarzenegger and probably Nicholas Cage, to Wonder Woman and other comic book heroes, to Garbage Pail Kids cards, to Troll dolls, to the NYC Rangers. Its cheezy. Don't mind the lava lamps and disco ball. I came here a few months ago and am sorry I have not managed to drag any of my friends back because its fairly close to my apartment. I like it though the service is a bit slow. It took about 45 minutes for them to come out with the pizza. I can't cry because its free and there was Sriracha sauce on the table which sealed the deal. Pizza quality? Not bad and I don't think they even charged us for getting one with pepperoni on it. It's on the Croc Lounge level of cheap cheesy pizza goodness. They also have board games like Jenga, Connect Four, Apples to Apples, and Trivia Pursuit and that's a major win! Only downside, they are a Notre Dame bar. BOO!

  3. I've always wanted to go to a bar where the owner said to themselves "Look I just want to own a bar where I can hang out and have a good time. On top of that I want everyone else to have a fun time with me." American Cheez is the fulfillment of that vision.

This place is plain fun. The staff and the owner certainly make the experience. I was a tourist that day but by the end of our time there we felt like regulars that lived around the corner. It's a dive but not really. It's a sports bar but not really. Hell it's probably a bunch of things every night but that's the beauty of it. I only wished that I lived upstairs and could be a regular. I wish I had a place in the bay area that made me feel this comfortable.

On top of the fact the place was fun, the drinks were strong, and the people were amazing they give you free personal pizzas. Yeah you heard me right. Free complimentary pizza in NYC just for drinking there. If that doesn't keep you coming back all the kitschy knick knacks from the 80's-90's adorning the walls will keep you staring and playing find this or that all night long.

I pray that one day they open an American Cheez 2 in Oakland. you know since we are the next Brooklyn anyway… if you guys read this feel free to make this happen.  I'll even become a Notre Dame fan for the rest of my life.

  4. So far, this is my favorite bar in New York. The bar selection is great. Not too expensive. Plus, you can get a free mini pizza with your drink! Perfect for drunk munchies or just munchies in general.

This place gets crowded and is definitely very popular, but it's understandable why.

    Good music, too!

  5. There is so much to like about this bar. The obscure oldie films being projected? Yas. The niche posters of 90s references on the wall? Yas. The affordable drinks and free pizzas? YASSS. Lo and behold, this bar was made for the weird generation of people who grew up loving things that not many other people understood. I knew this the moment I laid eyes on the Starship Troopers poster on the wall, and then the weird painting of Arnold Schwarzenegger diagonal from it. Calling all fellow weird kids from high school–this is where we belong!

Drinks are standard here, but honestly, you don't need some sort of fancy craft beer to wash down a FREE PIZZA. How they can keep up this "free mini pizza with every drink" baffles me. Now I may have been pretty drunk around this time, but I thought the pizza was pretty bangin' for the price of free. (Disclaimer: Around this time, I also find uncooked ramen noodles and cold meatball sandwiches in front of my refrigerator pretty bangin' too). Nonetheless, I'll be returning–and I'll be bringing with me some more weirdos who will think this place is pretty darn nifty too.

  6. This is an unusual place for 7th Avenue South Slope. It fits nicely in Williamsburg or the East Village, but here – among the quiet restaurants and kid toy shops – it feels off. However, this is not a bad thing.

We visited American Cheez last Saturday at 2am. Oddly, it was empty but business started to pick up around 3am. At that point, the bartenders began singing, the free pizza was flowing and the inebriated patrons began to make conversation. You don't get this at Double Windsor. It was wonderful.

  7. Great local bar. They have karaoke nights, give you pizza, and show basketball games, what else do you want? A great low key local bar in this area is kinda hard to find.

  8. My wife and I walked into this place because we were looking for a place to hang out until our party arrived for dinner across the street. We didn't know what to expect.  Once we entered you could tell right away it was a real divey place.  It wreaked of beer the moment you walked through the door.  But the place did have it's charm once we took a look around it's small space.  All over the walls are pictures and posters of total pop nostalgia from before the turn of the millennium. We both got a beer at the bar and the bartender was really friendly.  We were in awe of all the cool things that were posted on the walls like the Wonder Woman and Knight Rider posters and dart board in the back.  They had 90's rock playing in the background which gave a really cool vibe.  At the tables on the back wall were games from yesteryear like Simon says, Connect 4, 90 trivial pursuit, Jenga. Apples to Apples was also there which is a pretty fun game to play with a group.  You could totally make a drinking game out of that.  Apparently they make pizza there too but we didn't get a chance to sample that.  Overall it was a really chill place with an old school vibe.  If I lived in that neighborhood I'd probably hang out there pretty often. Sucks for me that I don't have a place like this near me.
