Another pretty solid pizza place in Ditmas Park. Like San Remo, probably not worth traveling for, but always good when I need to satisfy a pizza craving fast. Stand outs are white slices and the garlic knots, which are super airy, very garlicky and dipped in their excellent marinara sauce could even upstage the pizza.
The business hours are "whatever they please," so be mindful of this issue. Pizza is good Brooklyn Style pizza. The staff is nice, but sometimes busy :-). I love the plain slices. Reasonably priced.
Given the press Lo Duca has gotten fairly recently from Slice and other sources–and the fact that I pass by it frequently on the subway train–I made a point to stop here for lunch one day. Being in Newport Plaza, Lo Duca does a brisk business with slice turnover being very good. It looks like a raw, stereotypical slice joint inside because that's exactly what it is. The owning family makes the pies, and all of the staff are pretty friendly in a Brooklyn kid of way.
I got the much trumpeted grandma slice. It was a good slice, but nothing more. The sparingness of the tomatoes was a double edged sword. On one hand, yes this does add more variety between bites as well as the cheese meeting the crisp bread on much of the slice. On the other hand, this create an imbalance between chunks of tomato, garlic, and cheese instead of those ingredients coming together. The crust was thin and crisp, but it didn't really impress me flavor-wise either. All in all Lo Duca would be very worthwhile if I was nearby, but not necessarily worth a special stop.
Lo Duca is a good Brooklyn slice joint blown up into an ideal by a pizza blog. There is nothing wrong with it not being a cosmic beacon of awesomeness. My issue is that I've heard some comparing this place to Di Fara. No. fucking. way. Other than being in Brooklyn, owned by Italians, and serving slices, what are the similarities? I believe it has to do with some people trying to set a trend for the next big thing, but more importantly (although related) it has to do with nostaglia for quality slices of NY pizza that are increasingly rare nowadays. My question: have we become so desparate for the slice joints of New York past that we venerate each traditional one that we have left? Time will tell, and I hope for our sake that Lo Duca doesn't become famous for this reason alone.
the pizza is mad good! they have many different slices that are off the hook.the quality is way better than most pizza shops in the area. the topping are too good to get a plain slice! you'll see..
