  1. Dear retro Pizza,
I'm so sorry for saying you're not as good as palitos was back in the day. Clearly you have stepped up your game! I am in love with this pizza. It is my favorite in Astoria by far. The staff is friendly and always is willing to make me a slice of that delicious barbecue pizza even if there's none left on the bar. And they still have the latest hours of pizza places in the area which is amazing. They've also made special orders for me on the spot, filling a calzone with whatever I wanted. Definitely too enthusiastic thumbs up I am ashamed about how many times I've stopped by only because I'm supposed to be on a diet. Oh well, diet always starts tomorrow!

  2. I think the chance of finding a really good  pizzeria in NYC that is open late night is basically slim to none, I think I have a better chance at finding Sasquatch. So the perk about this place is that it is open crazy late, think 2am weekdays and 4am fri and sat. I came on a Monday night around midnight and it didn't do it for me, maybe if I came earlier in the day, it might have been better.

    The food:

Regular- it was an OK regular, but it was kinda salty for me. The bottom could have been more crisp and the cheese was just reg cheese

Bacon, red onion and mushroom- this was respectable. The ingredients worked will with the slice, it was good not great. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Garlic knots- they were OK, I wish they were softer and fluffier. They were kinda hard and didn't have a nice chew.

  3. Easily makes one of my favorite pizza places. The margherita pizza was sweet and crisp, thin and filling. It was perfect!

  4. Decent pizza because it is open so late and there are little options at midnight. But it is not the best. Super oily and oddly on the sweet side. I still ate a ton of it because I was starving. But my hands were coated in grease after. But we also sprung for getting a pie with half truffle oil and half sausage, so the extra oil factor may be our fault. Store inside is super clean and they have geeky things on the walls. By geeky things I mean old cult and sci-fi, horror, etc movie posters from mostly the 50s and 60s. We waited for our pie which was around $15 or $16 for a large and half a pie with a topping and took it to go. Didn't take too long – around 20 minutes I'd guess. Got in a couple of rounds of Kim Kardashian's sim game. I guess its good in a pinch. But Rizzos is way better a few blocks over.

  5. The slices are very good. I've had their margherita. Crust is chewy without being too thick. The sauce is yummy and the ingredients are high quality. Prices are standard.

It's nothing fancy, just a little stop-in shop, but it's worth it if you're hungry and you want just a slice.

  6. I don't agree with the people who say the pizza here is oily. But pizza is one of those foods… there are SO many different kinds…there's no way to make everyone happy with one kind.

So the BF and I were pretty bummed out when the deli shut down- the guy who worked there was always super friendly and it was a convenient store (haha..convenience store..).

When we saw this place come up- we were kind of skeptical. The decor threw me off a lot, neon sounds and strange wallpaper. I wasn't expecting much.

But one late night, we were ultra lazy and didn't feel like going to our normal pizzerias (AND this one was open late)… we were actually very impressed.

The staff is very friendly and that always wins us over. The pizza is thin, my favorite, with a nice variety of toppings. The mediterranean is my favorite, especially after adding pepperoni.

After a few visits, we are regulars. I wish they had more of a pasta selection though.

  7. I do love this pizza place! It's not that old- I think maybe about 2 years old? What I really like about the place is the late night hours! Late night hours for pizza?!! A godsend! And the pizza is really good!! The sauce is on the sweet side so if you don't fancy sweet sauce then you might not like it- but lucky for me- I do love sweet sauce! 🙂 I've tried multiple kinds of pizza here and liked every kind of slice I've tried! This trip-  I got a regular slice and a Sicilian grandma's slice- so good! Another thing- the staff is super nice! There is usually a woman there when I stop in- I never got her name but I think she owns it or is at least a manager- she's super sweet! They also have baked goods- I've had the cannoli's and they definitely are good! I also like the way they have the place decorated with all old movie posters and old tv stuff- hence "Retro" I guess lol If you are nearby this place- stop in for a slice! You won't be disappointed! 🙂

  8. So months ago there used to be a really awesome deli here. They were clean, spacious, friendly and would sell my boyfriend and I random things like frozen sausage patties, uncooked eggs and like 4 slices of bread just cuz I wanted to whip up breakfast.

One day this deli was gone and I was bummed because the older guy who worked here was friendly and I wonder what became of him since there's a part of me that has a soft spot for people losing their jobs and knowing NYC it was probably rent related since their Department of Health grade was always a solid and much deserved "A".

Welp, about 5 to 6 weeks ago it finally looked like something was about spring up in it's place and a small circular sign popped up that said "Retro Pizza". I hoped it wouldn't be a lame pizza spot with subpar food an and an awesome new addition to the neighborhood!

    I'll expand later :).
