i decided to try Fumo because they were n grub hub and close to my place. The delivery was prompt but the pizza was mediocre for the price. I got the margharetti pizza and felt the cheese and tomato sauce tasted canned and not fresh. It isn't the cheapest too. I think I will stick to don antonios.
Cool little gem!
The restaurant is airy and wide with high ceilings; it has a contemporary feel and it's a nice place to bring anyone minus the pressure of removing a casual component altogether. I brought my dad and little sister for lunch. They live a few blocks from this restaurant, and ambiguously enjoyed the living proof of their rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood.
The wine list was fantastic. The spicy calamari appetizer was a wonderful surprise in that it was not fried, but served in a chunky and spicy tomato concoction topped with an abundance of fresh basil. The kale caesar salad with steak was phenomenal, the steak tender and juicy. It was a little heavy on the dressing for my own taste, so I'll make sure to ask for it on the side when I return.
The service was mellow and sincere. Roberto was friendly in a way that felt natural, and he was serious about and sentimentally attached to what he was serving.
Fumo is a win! Will return soon!
JVA AI Non-Salad Options – 1/5 and 5/5
AI Accommodation – 2/5
Why do I LOVE this place? Because they offer fancy, schmancy GF pizza!!! Yes – I think it's an extra 2 bucks, but you don't have to sacrifice taste. The crust is deliciously crispy and soft at the same time.
Why also is it 1/5 rating? – Because none of the standard pizzas have AI-friendly toppings, except for one that is almost-AI friendly because it doesn't have tomato sauce (but it also comes with prosciutto, which is processed, and hard cheese).
But – it's the only place where I can get a yummy-tasting almost-AI pizza delivered to my home. And they usually delivery before the estimated time.
major downgrade in both service AND food quality. also, where was
the waiter they started with when they first opened?! miss that guy
I'll have to finish this when I have time later, but Fumo let me down hard last night. 🙁
Fumo,
You sold me a dream of white on white with black trim as decor. Classy music with marble counters and table tops. So pretty to look at but beauty fades and reality sets in.
Bread and oil was decent, despite being served cold. Arancini appetizer was flavorful, moist and the highlight of the meal. Despite the nice flavor, the portion size was smaller than pictured. Waiter faltered when asked and inferred we were mistaken.
Bitter basil, huge unevenly cut chunks of garlic, a drastically smaller serving than pictured and sub par clams were the makings of my spaghetti vongole. Pasta was nicely al dente, but the sauce congealed and tasted like flour mixed in butter. After eating this, I changed my mind about ordering a drink. Waste of money and calories. I hope the waitress passed along my feedback.
Service was lacking. Waitress only came over to check on us after several failed attempts to get her attention when we wanted the check. Food runners and bus boys seemed to be the only ones working hard. For a good while I forgot what our waitress looked like, since she only came over twice. Not sure if it was because we were seated in the Al fresco section but we were in plain view.
I didn't bother to check out the restroom. Disappointing and would only go back after someone else, plays guinea pig, and confirms it is worth the trek up the hill.
