If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. One of the joys of life for any transplanted native New Yorker is the discussion that arises upon meeting one of his or her ilk, in whatever remote state. It's then that you talk about how the pizza and bagels and bread and cold cuts are just terrible and nothing like New York's, wherever you now live. Ah who doesn't love a good gripe? Sometimes you end up with some great information this way. That's how I found out about the goodness that is Louie & Ernie's pizza: on line at a Safeway in Northern Virginia, many years ago now. The elderly gentleman in the Yankees hat informed me that was his sorely missed neighborhood pizza place.
I lived in the Bronx the majority of my life, and up until that chance encounter, had never even heard of this old skool spot. Not in all my born days! My ignorance kind of makes sense, considering that when I was growing up, there was great pizza on my block, not to mention our close proximity to Arthur Avenue. Not likely that I would've ever taken the trek all the way out the Louie & Ernie's from my neighborhood. Our most far off pizza field trips at that point took place conveniently when we'd go out to Brooklyn to visit my grandmother.
After moving outta the Bronx and away from NYC, I can tell you now that I have a mental Rolodex of every quality pizza place in the city, on the East Coast, and beyond. When you're taken away from the pizza you love, you do become something of a pizza stalker and an absolute fiend. I wouldn't have had to go far as a kid, but these days I'll force a detour any chance I get. Louie & Ernie's be one of these delicious detours.
We have sidestepped over to Louie & Ernie's many times now, over the years. It's consistently consistent, this neighborhood pizzeria. Down the stairs you go, place your order at the counter, find your table, and the, in what sometimes feels like eons only cause you're jealously spying tables of families enjoying slice after slice all around you, your hot delicious pie will be brought to you on a silver tray. This is very good pizza. It's super thin and crispy, crispy crusted with only the slightest bit of chew. There's some herbiness in the oozy sauce and cheese. If I had even the slightest smallest suggestion, it's that sometimes I'd like a little more sauce up on there. But really, I mean seriously. I'd never pass up this pie. It's true that we are animals, straight gavones, but it's fairly simple to take down a large pie, the two of ya. And you should, any chance that you get.
Came In today with the little one as we have passed this place by on the bus a zillion times and have never made it in. When you push past the door, the place opens up to a narrow upside down L. The counter and fridge are directly across each other, which leaves little room to maneuver, even worse if there are more than 2 people crowding the area. The lady at the counter was quick and friendly. I gave her my order and then I stood kind of awkwardly to the side as she took the orders of others who came after I did. She told me to sit and she would bring our order to us and I could just pay on the way out. Well that was a first but ok works for us!
I wanted to sit outside but no one was out there and little one found a table he liked inside so that's where we stayed. Our slices came shortly after, (one plain one sausage). I had read from another fellow Yelper how the sausage Slice was literally a plain slice with chunks of meat thrown on top, and it really was! Lol I didn't mind at all but the sausage was just too salty for our liking. I ended up picking most of them off and eating the pizza as is. Nevertheless we did enjoy our time there, and love how ice cream is conveniently next door(review for that to follow). I would come again and sit outside if I find myself close by and in need of a pizza fix 😉
hands down my favorite slice of pizza on the planet! can not and will not enjoy a slice anywhere else.
When it comes to neighborhood pizzerias, Louie & Ernie's takes the cake (or should I say pie?).
I'm a thin crust pizza kind of guy – it doesn't need to be like paper, but definitely thinner than your average American pizza. Louie & Ernie's brings it – the crispy crust melded together with the fresh ingredients they use is everything you want. I had two slices of plain cheese but easily could have eaten more.
You won't find cutting edge or artisan pies here, but you will find true New York City pizza – definitely the real deal.
Wow and I mean wow. What a let down. Have been wanting to try this place for a while, hoping it was like a good old slice used to get in the Bronx as a kid. The regular slices were terrible – inedible hard, greasy crust that had texture like it was fried. Dripping with too much oil and tasteless cheese/sauce. Sausage slice we got was a bit better as the sausage had good flavor, but still the issue with the inedible crust. Such nice workers. Sorry this review couldn't be better but I couldn't eat my slice.
Hands down best pizza in the Bronx….and maybe even NYC, although I haven't had too much out of the other boroughs. My wife even likes this place and she hates NYC style thin crust (prefers to order from Papa John's while living in the pizza capitol of the world).
Too bad they don't deliver or we would eat here way more often, well worth the 15ish minute drive from our house.
Big Fan
There's something about an old school pizza parlor. Especially when they make an almost iconic version of a product in your specific neighborhood. What I mean by this is that Louie and Ernie's is a legend in The Bronx and the pizza does the talking. L&E makes a cross between a super thin crust pizza and your typical NY folded slice.
We ordered 2 pizzas because I am not in The Bronx very often. You have to order a sausage, it's a staple. We also ordered a roni black olive. Both pizzas were top notch.
There is a reason why Yelp, TA, and Facebook give this place an average of 4.5 stars. If I could give the place 4.5 stars I would. Can't do a 5, that's reserved for Totonno's.
Love Louie and Ernie's
Thanks
We happened to be in the area and so checked this place out that I had bookmarked! I ordered 1 sausage slice and 1 sicilian slice. I loved the sausage slice, the meat was really tasty and perfectly seasoned and they do not skimp on the toppings, you get loads of meat! I enjoyed the sicilian slice, but I wasn't a huge fan of the crust/base. Sausage is definitely the way to go!
While we were there the tables were full and there was a constant stream of people ordering pies to go, which is always a good sign. I would return if I'm in the area again, it is about a 15 minute walk from the subway, so not the most connected place, but it's good!
