Luzzo's opening a slice joint is a great thing. The man behind the restaurant–Michele Iuliano–knows his pizza and cooks at a very high level. This place is nondescrit from the outside but is nice for a slice joint inside, with a gas fired oven in plain view. The guy behind the counter was Italian, and I enjoyed talking to him about soccer and this family of pizzerias briefly. I was in a rush though, so I had to get my slice and go.
I went with a slice with mushrooms. They weren't stingy at all with the mushrooms and they were very fresh. The tomatoes were flavorful, and the cheese although being aged mozzarella, was of high quality and applied sparingly. The crust was a little more basic than I expected in terms of flavor, but was light and crisp. The whole thing was balanced wonderfully, and was one of the better slices I've had in Manhattan. It was also only $3, and I also saw a slice with fresh mozzarella for $2.
It figures that it takes some new blood for a great, affordableslice joint to open in Manhattan. If only we could get a few more!
I thought their pizza was just ok. Nothing too impressive. The Pepperoni pizza I had was fresh out of the oven so I cannot comment on the idea of them reheating it poorly. I got their lasagna and though it was very good. I would come back for that.
Little Luzzo's has a wider selection of slices than your typical slice place and, in my experience, the slices are fresh and tasty. The sausage pizza is particularly good. The crust is a thin and a little bit chewy, and they don't overdue it with the cheese, so the slice gets a nice balance of cheese and tomato sauce (and toppings of course). Plus the staff here are much friendlier than the average place, and you can watch a soccer match on their tv while you eat.
Not big on pizza but occasionally want a slice. Since I've cut way back on dairy I went with the white cheese and scrapped most the cheese off. The pizza dough was soft and tasty. Service was friendly. I love the chest that is used as the stand for condiments. Most of the pizza looked fresh and people who came in seemed to order the lasagne.
I was hungry, I was in between clients, and I didn't want something so filling I would be burping over my clients. Pizza fit the bill and Little Luzzos' was a place I had passed by on the crosstown bus so many times. A small hole a flight of steps up. this place has an old world feel, with its exposed brick interior and the large flat screen TV. I thought I was back in Italy, where you knew the boys would be watching the soccer games in between flipping pies. The place was small, with two counters facing the brick walls, and four stools a piece. Now for the pizza. It had a crispy, crackling crust with the right amount of thinness and crunch, and the perfect combination of sauce to cheese. The slice looked fresh, delicious, but when I took a bite, a bit over salted. No crispy perfect crust could make up for that. Give the proximity to my client and the train, I'd give it a try again. The price was gentle, $2.50 for a cheese slice, but I'd probably try the ones with topping to see if maybe the sauce on the others wouldn't be as salty. If Luzzos could improve on the sauce, they come close to a really good thin crust pizza.
It has been 2 years since I last ate here and remembered it being good. Plus I'm a huge fan of the original Luzzo's.
I was disappointed in the quality of the pizza today. The worst part was that I had given my word that it would be good and it just wasn't. To those that I've wronged, I'm sorry.
Luzzo's is this hole in the wall, studio-sized joint a few feet away from the 96th Street subway station. If there's one thing you need to order here, it's the potato and gorgonzola square pizza: my boyfriend and I inhaled a slice in a matter of bites. I came later in the day, and it seemed like they had already sold out a bunch of their pies. All that were left were some pepperoni, white, and the prosciutto/fig combo (which actually sounded heavenly).
$5 credit card maximum. Currently running a deal where two slices of margerita pizza and a soda will run you $5. Perfect for a quick dinner or an impromptu snack after you get off the subway.

Great slice of pizza. For $2, I got a crispy, thin crust slice of pizza. That's the way I like it! None of that doughy, soggy stuff – this slice was everything but!
