Old school classic Italian restaurant. As a newbie to the area, I must piggyback on co-workers and work peers for local good eats, good libations, and how-to in my new found role.
Party of two for sit down lunch was very brief one hour session due to time restraints. My co-worker order one meat ball Parmesan hero sandwich while I ordered the lunch special Penne a la Vodka. Service is attentive and my pasta was very tasting and filling. Staff warmly greet regulars who often patronize them and welcomes new visitors like myself. Price is moderate to spendy as it varies by the platter and the entree ordered.
Sal's is awesome. Where to start?! I first saw Sal's probably about 5 years ago when I came to visit Manhattan College. It's where I wound up attending, and so went to Sal's frequently over the years.
Food: I've had lots of their dishes and have been impressed with all. Their pizza is actually NOT the best I've ever had, but very good nonetheless. Their pasta is delish! They also make a VEGAN pizza. A truly VEGAN pizza. No cheese. My sister is Vegan, so we go here whenever she comes to visit.
Atmosphere: It's tiny, cramped, there's often a long wait, and its WONDERFUL. The traditional red and white checked tablecloths and funky lighting make it so cozy. Also, it's a corner restaurant, so it's shaped kinda funny, all adding to the charm. They put white paper down on all the tables over the tablecloths and will give you crayons if you ask. 😉
Summary: I love Sal's. They do great salads, pasta, and pizza. They deliver. The prices aren't bad. I will continue to go to Sal's and recommend it to all!
*** I almost forgot. It's BYOB. So you can go get a bottle of wine down the block or a 6pack and bring it in, free of charge!
BYOB with consistently good food, friendly service and the one of the slowest kitchen's in town. The meal will be worth the wait, so be sure you aren't too hungry to pass the time until dinner hits the table. Otherwise have one of your party step down the block to pick up a bottle of wine to tide you over.
This is an old family style Italian restaurant the way I knew many years ago that New York City and New Jersey used to serve.
The menu is old school but well done version. It is definitely better than the ones I've had where tourists go in midtown.
You can order the specials or from their menu. The portions are large. Although I ate all the mollusk in my dish, I took home the left over pasta for future dinner next two days. That's because I liked the flavor of my spicy Diavolo sauce which replaced the marinara sauce my Salvatore seafood pasta was going to have.
The cheese is not imported Parmesan I think; buy the sauce was good. I prefer freshly grated cheese.
The thin garlic bread is good.
