Two Boots Upper West Side

“I've never been able to go beyond the Tony Clifton — mushrooms, sweet red pepper pesto, vidalia onions and mozzarella.”

“After much experimentation, I've settled on the Grandma Bess and the Newman as my standards, with the Bayou Beast and Cleopatra Jones in rotation as well.”

“The cornmeal coated crust gives a great texture to the slices and there's something slightly sweet about the dough I like as well.”

  1. So wild and zany for all it's umemorableness. I might need to be in a different state of mind to truly enjoy the place. I'm being too hard, I'm sure on another night I could easily rate this four stars, or if I ordered an entire pizza, I would be doubly impressed. As it is, I guess I'm just reviewing the late night slices.

First, slightly more expensive than your average slice. Is this because you're paying for UWS prices? Newman's face and namesake on a pie? Maybe the pepperoni slice was more expensive because they do top it with thick, salty slices. That was possibly the best part of the pizza. The crust was like twice-baked, not burnt, but very, very crunchy and brown, probably because it was reheated. Cheese and sauce unmemorable.

The ambiance is…odd. On one side, you have a psychedelic mural of Yoko Ono and John Lennon holding flowers and dripping…onto the table areas. On the other side you have some shrine to some lesser known blaxploitation actress–so minor and so many years ago I don't even recall now that I write this review a day later…all while a Miles Davis joint plays on the speakers. The Miles Davis was maybe the best part of the experience. OK, and the pepperoni.

  2. I've walked by many of their locations and finally decided to stop in this UWS location for a quick bite.  While the pizza names are fun, the ingredients in many of them were just okay.  Nothing that seemed unique or different and all of them looked like they had been sitting out for a while.  I don't recall which one I ended up getting which speaks to the flavor.

The man working the counter was not really friendly or pleasant.  Just there and didn't really offer much interaction.  Is this what the other Two Boots are like??

When my slice came out of the oven, it looked ok and was slightly warmed.  Some fresh shredded mozzarella before reheating would have woken up the slice a bit.  The flavors didn't particularly stand out, including the sauce and the crust.  I know some pizza places use cornmeal on the bottom.  But I really noticed a heavy use of cornmeal in the crust and on the bottom which I didn't enjoy.  It felt like they rely on the cornmeal to simulate a crispy crust instead of the pizza dough itself.

Other than the unique, colorful decor, a little disappointed in the food.

  3. Why did it take me so long to get into Two Boots? Definitely a spot I have been sleeping on. My favourite slices are the Bella and the Bird. Dope combination of toppings and the cornmeal crust is seriously so good. Definitely not a mess free meal but don't be a whiner- It's pizza. I'm going to come here with a vegan bud soon so I'll update on his thoughts on the vegan fare.

Once the honey-moon phase has passed and the kitsch of the place has worn off, sometimes the chicken is a little dry. That's my only complaint. Otherwise I can always get down with Two Boots.

  4. Love this location since the staff is uber friendly. I'm not crazy about the vegan pizza, but the vegan calzone is out of this world! The ricotta and mozzarella, mixed with spinach and tomatoes is so filing, and a small is large enough to fill two rumbling tummies. You can add whatever toppings you like and go ham! 10 minutes later, you'll have a piping hot vegan calzone ready to be devoured.
*I remember enjoying the bayou beast and cleopatra when I was omni, now if only they could make it vegan.
Hats off to you Two Boots!

  5. I liked this little hippy pizza joint! I headed back to my hotel in NY after a Broadway show and stumbled upon this spot. The service was good and they had slices fresh and waiting with my name on it. Apparently they serve gluten free pizza as well.

The Mr. Pink was delicious!! Creole chicken, tomatoes, garlic, and mozzarella. Love the cute movie/TV themed pizzas. 🙂

  6. hmmm $4 for a 99 cent pizza?seems legit.

There is absolutely nothing special about this place other than its close proximity to the subway stop. The pizza is mediocre and over priced. I think I will go back to my dominos delivery thank you very much.

  7. The plain slice was good, even better than most. The base was thin, with a nice crumb and a modest cheese sauce balance. I ordered two slices of gluten free pizza to bring home to my father. He has a bad skin allergy to gluten. After over a month of zero outbreaks, he suffered a serious disruption from one very small slice that came looking like crusty cracker. I can't say for sure that TB was the culprit, but … it's likely.

  8. Two Boots I know very well for their quick vegan options on-the-go. Always have several options for us, including slices or entire pies, calzones and sandwiches (which may be new…?) They use Daiya brand cheese which melts pretty well (though not my favorite it is still very good).

The location on the UWS I have been to a few times and have always received great service. Lots of seating avail, no restroom so drop the kids off at the pool before coming by.
