I came here with a friend who lives nearby in West Orange- he said the food was good, speedy and local. As soon as I looked at the place, I had pretty low expectations, because it was located in a strip mall near the PATH station. We sat down in the dining room and looked at the menus. There were a lot of options! I always get fried calamari, (my next quest is for the best calamari in NYC). I decided to get the Capellini with Shrimp and Broccoli Rabe, which comes with a side salad. My friend got a Shrimp Parm Sub. When the food arrived, it looked great, but upon my first bite I started to change my mind. The calamari was very rubbery, and looked like it came straight out of the frozen aisle at any supermarket. The Broccoli Rabe had that heated, watery, unfresh veggie taste. The pasta was mediocre at best. If I want good Italian food, I will look elsewhere. The only upside was that the food came out piping hot. I couldn't enjoy the food very much no matter what- will never come here again.
For years I'd pass by Nino's while going to either the Rite Aid or the Quick Check in this Harrison strip mall. All those times though, I never thought to check out the pizzeria. Only recently did my boyfriend and I stop in for a bite to eat. And I must say it was awesome!
After our homemade pizza at home didn't turn out as expected (left that dough out too long), I came up with the suggestion that we go to Nino's. My boyfriend was game, so off we went. We drove over since we didn't need to worry about parking. The strip mall has ample parking.
There are two sections – one is more of a sit-down, dining area where a waitress will take your order, and then there is the more casual pizzeria where you can either sit at one of the tables or up at the bar. We decided to sit on the pizzeria side at one of the tables. The girl who took care of us was really nice. We ordered Blue Moons, two veggie slices, a mesculin salad, and a side of broccoli rabe. It was a great meal.
I can only speak for the pepperoni and the buffalo chicken pizza. I got a slice of each and really enjoyed both. Wide slices, not too thin, but not too thick, and not greasy at all. You know how sometimes you fold a piece of pizza in half to make it easier to eat and sometimes grease drips from the crust onto your plate? Well this didn't happen with this pizza.
$6.75 for two slices. Not too expensive, but I've had comparable pizza for cheaper.
The staff was very friendly and really prompt.
They have beer on tap, but I'm not sure I would ever go here to sit down and eat, nor would I go here for the NFL games on Sundays. This place advertizes that it has the DirecTV Sunday Ticket, and that you can catch "all the games, all the time, on NFL Sunday." Maybe you can, but you might be watching 9 or 10 games on one TV. Why? Because they only have 3 or 4 TVs. I hate when places do this! If you're going to buy the NFL ticket, you ought to buy enough TVs to support all of the 1:00 games, don't you think?
I wish I could give 3.5 stars, because it's just a touch better than average. This is usually our go-to pizza place for my work lunch crowd, but not because we love it as much as it's convenient. Their white pizza is probably one of the best I've had in the Newark/Harrison area, but the rest of the pizza is average. Their hot sandwiches are ok, but the rolls seem a but too large for the food you get.
Service has always been great-the women working the register area always work hard trying to get your food to you quickly…they work harder than the guys dealing with the actual pizza and the ovens. I'll keep going here, at least until I find a better place closer to work.
Nino's still has the best Italian ices I've ever had, and I'm glad to say that I've been coming here for 29 years, and it's still the same.
The staff is really quick, efficient, and keep the food coming as fresh as they can. Make sure to ask about the specials of the day, and to have the garlic knots. Also, as your eyes roam around in dough-y bliss, make sure to make note of some of the pictures on the wall that reveal the old glory days of Nino's and how this place used to look. My grandmother lived around the corner from here, and it's nostalgic to look back and reminisce.
Whether take-out or eat-in, this is a loyal, quick option that isn't going any where any time soon in this neighborhood.
