My group and I ate here on Friday, July 31st. Since the restaurant does not yet have a website, I posted the Menu and several food photos which others may find useful.
Upon arrival, several of us had the Red Sangria. We watched how the pitcher was prepared and saw there was no skimping on the triple sec and/or brandy. It was a great Sangria, the very best I have had on Long Island. There were gratis freshly cooked and delicious thin sliced fried potato chips to munch on with the sangria.
On to the appetizers: the Flaming Portuguese Sausage(a BIG one) was superb and large enough to feed three people. Another appetizer the group enjoyed was the shrimp wrapped with bacon.
Notable entrees included the Paella(large portioned with lobster, not dry and cooked in a fresh tasting tomato based sauce), the Mixed Grill, the Pork Chop(perfectly cooked as ordered and served with yellow rice and beans), the Spare Ribs(tender and very well seasoned) and the Seafood with Rice. Members enjoyed the Flan and Chocolate Cake.
Service was friendly, prompt and efficient. Prices were extremely reasonable and portions were huge. Our host, Tony, made us feel very welcome. He put the punctuation point on a great evening with a complimentary Port after dessert drink for our group.
A restaurant that is worth returning to soon.
We visited Island Park to meet with fellow Yelpers and our Meetup Group to experience this nondescript Portugese restaurant down the block from Peters Seafood Restaurant. It is constructed of cinder blocks and is rather funky with a sign up on the top of the building with a Flamingo but a true hidden GEM. In fact if you didnt GPS it you might never find it.Upon entering there is a large bar on the right with some tables and on the left is the larger dining room where we sat.
We were welcomed byThe bartender Manny, a wonderful person who made beautiful music when preparing the Sangria…5 different liquors gave it a deep rich taste that prompted at least 5 pitchers for the diners.Tom C. our group leader and several of the ladies were enjoying their Martini's to get things cookin…After all arrived we were shown to our table and Manny was our appointed server with occasional visits from Tony the owner to insure all was well and we were having a good time. The service was great…thanks guys!
Bonnie G. and I , after imbibing our first pitcher of Sangria started off with Grilled Calamari in a garlic sauce which was tender and a good choice. We also tried the jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce..we luv garlic sauce..and it too was delicious and a great choice of Appy…The flambe'd
Portugese Sausage was someone elses but we tried it and pefecto mundo!! it was so good,.
For Mains, BG had Med Rare Skirt Steak which was tender cooked to perfection and delicious. I had the seafood in green sauce which included lobster, clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp and was good to the last drop! Another member tried the Sole Franchese which was substantial and also great tasting dish.
Its nice when a fellow Yelper finds a hidden Gem and shares it with the rest of us. Thanks Tom C.for bring us here…we will return
Decent but not stellar Island Park Portuguese restaurant/ bar. Ordered some sangria which was fruity and nice. We ordered the BBQ chicken for two which was a great value for $24 and came with a huge portion of grilled chicken, yellow rice, sautéed veggies, potato crisps and salad. The chicken, unfortunately, was a tad over cooked and dry. The sautéed vegetables however were well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Service is a tad slow but very friendly and welcoming. Prices look high on paper but when you factor in the portion sizes, it's rather reasonable. I'd like to come back and try a fish dish and update my review.
My wife and I went to Flamingo bar and cafe for lunch using a Groupon certificate. This was a difficult restaurant to find as it was on the side of a main road. When we arrived we found the restaurant to be very warm and uncomfortable with almost useless air conditioning. We than ordered a special dish of various meats with rice and beans. The meats were good but my sausage was overdone. The rice was inedible and was replaced by a delicious dish of steamed vegetables. We then ordered a side of homemade fries which was small for its 7.00 cost. Our server Beatrice was good and was responsive and the owner was very friendly. The price to value ratio is slightly below average for this type of restaurant.Flamingo has some good points but needs improvement in several areas to be a top notch restaurant.
