I've walked by here many times and never tried it out because my boyfriend is allergic to vegetables. So today, while he was at work, I decided to give it a go. I love it!!! They give you a LOT of salad and everything was fresh. I love that their meat/seafood is sustainable/antibiotic free.
I particularly liked the custom salad option and price wasn't too bad ($11 total for mine). The salad is so big I ate it for lunch AND dinner. I'm not sure why all the bad reviews about service, I had no trouble with mine. Will be coming here often during the summer!
I was highly skeptical of this whole salad thing. I have a big appetite and I am by no means a "salad guy". But I left surprisingly full and happy with my salad.
I recommend ordering off the menu because the choices are overwhelming. After you place your order, the ingredients are placed in a bowl and passed to a "chopping station". The chopping and mixing ceremony reminded me of Cold Stone Creamery but it's not totally pointless. I liked that they add as much dressing as I like to negate any health benefit my salad may have had.
The quality of the ingredients was excellent. The greens were ultra fresh and the chicken was real white meat. I recommend the Thai Chicken Crunch salad (minus the celery) with the Spicy Thai Peanut dressing (wasn't spicy but totally delicious).
I had an AWFUL experience with Just Salad. I placed an order online and received a confirmation e-mail saying our food would be here in the next 45-60 minutes.
I called the number on my e-mail at the 1 hour mark and was told that my local Just Salad location was closed (It was a Saturday) and another location was filling the order and we should have it in 10 minutes.
I called again at the 90 minute mark and was told that they had no idea when our food was coming and that it was out for delivery. The woman on the food was extremely rude.
Our food finally arrived after 2 hours. 2 hours for 2 salads. If I ordered them from NJ, it would have taken less than 2 hours.
2 words for Just Salad – Never. Again.
I ordered the thai chicken salad and when I got my salad there was no chicken… when I went back in line they filled my bowl up with the chicken that it should have came with. Salads are appropriately priced ($8-10) but the smoothies are ridiculously overpriced (~$6). I asked for a cup of water and the water machine was not working – when I told the staff about it they just responded with "I guess it's out of service… sorry" and didn't do anything to help us out until we asked if they could give us some water from their sink in the back. Customer service was not great as you can see. Not sure that I would come back here…
Healthy lunch option around NYP but way too expensive. To order, you first choose a vegetable base, then four toppings and then a dressing. The toppings aren't labeled though, making it hard to tell what some toppings are. I would say the service is ok. It wasn't bad but I feel like they could be nicer.
I got the kale with a hard boiled egg, cucumbers, buffalo chicken, avocado, and balsamic vinegar dressing. The kale was really dry! I had such a hard time swallowing it in the beginning! Even though the server chops the salad and mixes the ingredients for you, still mix everything adequately before eating to ensure that the kale isn't too dry!! After mixing, the kale became edible and actually tastes pretty good. I thought the toppings really mixed well together and everything was really tasty!
This is definitely a healthy and tasty place to grab lunch around NYP but it is just way too expensive! My salad ended up costing $12+ which is ridiculous. I honestly don't know if I'll be back. The other food places around the area aren't that good but having to fork over $12+ for a salad is just ridiculous ya know??
I like Just Salad (had it near me when I was in grad school, and was sad to leave when I switched jobs). Then this store opened up earlier this year and I was ecstatic. Since it is so close to work, I've been scores of times and I've come to the conclusion that the food and experience average out to 3 stars.
Impressions:
(-) very long lines during 12-2pm, especially with all the hospitals here. The line moves though, there's no doubt about that. Hectic, loud, and the service is hit or miss. Some days the first person you encounter who collects your greens in a bowl, as well as the other ingredients you want, is very efficient and courteous. Other days, like today, they are like tortoises and it befuddles me why they are so slow when people behind me receive their salad ingredients together before I do.
(-) I always make my own salad, and although the manager takes the order down on a piece of paper and circles 2 free toppings (if you bring your own bowl), one out of every two or three trips, someone will "warn" me that if I order more than 4 toppings, I have to pay. HELLO, CAN YOU READ THE PIECE OF PAPER before telling me this. You have my piece of paper. I KNOW I HAVE 6 TOPPINGS all together, I bought the reusable bowl…. Today, after I said to the woman, I have 6 toppings, she said to me, Where is your reusable bowl? I pointed to my bag. GET out of here with your attitude. Don't you think the manager who scribbled down my order checked that I have a reusable bowl?
Hit or miss. Not to mention that if I'm going to pay nearly $10 for a salad, you should fill that up to the top of my bowl. Whenever I ate at the Just Salad down by NYU, the service there was excellent, efficient, and they didn't skimp on greens. Sigh.
The salads themselves are pretty good. And there are plenty of options to choose from, from preset combinations to make your own. You can choose the salads chopped or whole, decide which dressing goes on there, and there is an assortment of decent ingredients to mix in there. It's definitely fresh, and (usually) fast. Sometimes it takes a while for your salad to be ready, especially if the person ahead of you orders 4 salads to go.
In any case, this place is a take out place. You can eat in, but the fluorescent or LED lights are a bit white and harsh. Plenty of space. The front end is a juicery, so if you want to combine your healthy meal with a healthy drink, I guess it's right there! Pricing for a salad is generally around $10. Not bad!
The salads are very good but the selections can be a little overwhelming, especially for the first time coming here.
I love the fact that you can choose the type of salad such spinach, kale, etc. Your first 4 toppings are included in the base price. What one needs to be aware of is the cost of each extra topping, which I did not do… Needless to say and $16 and change later, I had a salad made to my specifications. I was a little shocked but I'm glad that it tasted good.
I will return, however, I'll be very mindful to keep my topping selections at a minimal!
