Spaghetti Incident

“The sauce was amazing and the spaghetti was cooked perfectly al dente the way I like it, still with a slight soft crunch in the core of the noodle (hate mushy pasta).”

“Enjoyed the carbonara and ragu options for our dinner, both highly recommended.”

“Really amazing spaghetti, where I highly recommend the chitarra and the salmone & asparagi.”

  1. OMG I hate to be THAT person who gave Spaghetti Incident 3 stars.  Especially because I love love love homemade pasta. But, the food here with all of the expectation could have been better.  Came with my bff Tues after work around 8. They do not seat entire parties nor take reservations for small groups, just call and wait.  It seems like a line is always forming to sit down but turnover is frequent, so we didn't wait more than 30 minutes. Not terrible. The place is small though and it gets hot in there!  ALSO THEY ARE CASH ONLY. Can someone please emphasize?  Thank you.

Anyway.. I don't know what it was but service was kind of slow.  Took us forever to get our food and I think this affected what I thought of it.  Firstly, we ordered two pesto arancini and they gave us one pesto, one special artichoke/mozzarella.. no matter, they were both really good. Esp the peso, that was the best. Possibily the best arancini – not too greasy, etc.  Wish they were bigger though for nearly $5 a pop.

Then, the food. Only a few of them are made with house pastas; they should beef that up. I wanted to try the spaghetti with meatballs but after hearing it wasn't homemade spaghetti, I opted for the chittara.  So did my gf… and by the time we got it (cause it took so long), it was bit lukewarm and gummy. Not in a good al dente way – like it was cold.  The mozzarella was also weirdly thrown in, and the basil flavor wasn't there enough for me.

They give you bread to start but wish they'd given EVOO. Their prices went from like $10 to $13 so they should at least do that.  We shared a dessert which was panna cotta with basil infused strawberry- that was inventive and good and refreshing bu could not the best pairing for the panna cotta . The PC base was excellent though- strongly vanilla.

We skipped on drinks. I'd willing to come back to try others but have to say I now won't go out of my way.. it really disappointed me. They do seem to have good specials.  I would suggest you try it.

  2. In the hunt for some carbs, I ended up in this wonderful little restaurant.

I went with the Chitarra because of fresh pasta. We tried to sub their specials, like a spaghetti and meatballs with fresh pasta, but the waiter highly recommended we stick with the dry pasta because the pasta falls apart from the sauce and ends up "mushy" otherwise. They could've upsold us, but made recommendations based on quality of what we would enjoy. Props to that.

The Chitarra has a wonderful supple fresh pasta. A touch of a bite, without getting to al dente like the waiter pointed out. It is wrapped around by a bright and fresh tomato sauce, chunks of tomato, some basil, and large square of fresh, chewy mozarella.

At $13, a great value for a plate of pasta, and an exceptional execution.

  3. This place is awesome start to finish. Each and every member of the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. We were seated immediately and greeted by our fabulous waiter, Ethan. The menu is pretty self explanatory with just enough options, although it was still hard to choose. I had the carbonara and my mom had the bucatini amitriciana. Both were incredible. The portions were just right, the bread and oil we had at the beginning of our meal was great, and the arancini were AMAZING. Seriously, I may only have had rice balls at NJ pizzerias, but these were out of this world. We finished with delicious cappuccinos and a dessert that I forget the name of but it starts with a B. It was all very good. The space is really nice too. You should just go, you'll love it.

***Update. The dessert is called Budino. 🙂

  4. Saw this place on instagram and I knew I had to try it. One because I love spaghetti and two because they were serving the spaghetti out of a paper cone.

I went on a Tuesday night, all the tables were full but we were lucky and a table was just getting up. My boyfriend and I dined in so we didn't get the spaghetti in paper cones but I did see people taking it to go. The place is pretty small and dark, but very cute atmosphere.

We started with 2 crabmeat and fontina cheese rice balls which were very good. They tasted like a crab cake with rice and cheese. Then we tried the Caprice Salad which was a special and it was delicious!!! The tomatoes were perfectly rip and drenched in balsamic. For dinner I had the Salmone & Asparagi which is Steamed Asparagus, Capers, Chopped Fresh Salmon Sautéed in Creamy Vodka Sauce. It was very good, but the only thing I would say it that it says it is in a Vodka sauce but it was definitely an alfredo sauce, which I normally don't order especially in the summer because it is so heavy. Besides that it was delicious! My boyfriend ordered the Salsiccia e Broccoli which is Italian Sausage, Broccoli Rabe, in White Wine Sauce. It was delicious as well!

I will definitely be going back to try other things on the menu!

    Tip* they only take cash!

  5. Adorable little joint in the Soho area! Stopped by on  a whim with two other friends after searching for good Italian places in the area. Luckily the host was able to seat us upon entrance — yay for no waits at 9pmish on a Saturday!

Ambiance wise — small place with large open windows, romantic in a casual way  (dimmer lights, tables close to each other, candles on the tables); great for a dinner with 1 to 3 other people.

The menu has the perfect amount of options and includes mostly spaghetti based dishes but some arancini as well. I ordered the kale pesto spaghetti. I am a bit confused as to why only 3 or so dishes had house-made spaghetti (kale pesto was one of them) .
While waiting for our dishes, we had bread and olive oil , unfortunately they did not have butter to serve with the bread and the olive oil was just plain meaning no herbs or anything. I would have liked it better if they offered some sort of herby/flavored olive oil with the bread rather than plain olive oil.

The portion size is great for the price — the dish had a strong kale flavor (which I personally like) and was extremely filling. My party also ordered a liter of Rose (got 5 cups out of it) … the Rose was nothing special but the liter was for $30 which is a great deal. For dessert we ordered the Caramel custard/pudding. It was not very sweet and I thought it fell a bit flat in terms of flavor, the waiter also said it was like flan but the consistency was definitely more like pudding.

Overall, the great prices for a flavorful portion of pasta but the dessert was a bit unimpressive. Would give it a 3.5/5.

  6. Wait staff was friendly, but service was slow. Food was good but nothing special. Prices were cheap – keep in mind that this is cash only!

Seems like a fun hangout for college students or recent grads, but otherwise not worth the wait or the shlep.

  7. Tried to come here once but they were closed! Glad I got to drop by today to try out their food. Their whole menu basically only consists of spaghettis, salads, and arancini balls. Pretty simple, but they sure know how to do it well! There were a bunch of parties that had to wait a while, so remember to make reservations before you come. The place is pretty small, but cozy (good date spot :D), with a mix of tables and spots at the bar along the open kitchen.

Between the five of us, we decided on 6 arancini balls, a salad, and 4 spaghettis to share:

Arancini (Peas $3, Beef Ragu $4, Crabmeat $4.50)
These came out fresh, crispy on the outside, creamy and soft on the inside…YUMMMMMMM!!! My least favorite one was probably the peas, it was semi bland, but I was able to save it by dipping it in the tomato sauce they provide. Minimum order of 2pcs.

Cabin Salad $8.50 (steamed asparagus, mixed cherry tomatoes, arugula, goat cheese, basil dressing)
This salad was a lot smaller than we expected…but it was nice and refreshing in this hot weather. If you have a big party, consider ordering 2.

Chitarra* $13 (homemade mozzarella, basil, fresh chopped tomato sauce)
A lot of us named this our favorite of the night…! The fresh tomato sauce was bright and vibrant with the right amount of sour. The homemade mozzarella chunks dispersed throughout the spaghetti were the loves of my life, SO GOOD. So simple, but so perfect! Definitely reminiscent of the spaghetti dish at Scarpetta 😉

Kale Pesto* $13 (with walnuts, garlic, parmigiano, light cream sauce)
This is a pretty unique one with distinct flavors. Not sure I would order this one again, but it was good! The kale and pesto flavors are suuuuppperrr strong.

Salsiccia E Broccoli $13 (italian sausage, broccoli rabe, white wine sauce)
Everyone's least favorite…I think the lack of a real sauce that binds everything together was the downfall of this spaghetti. The spaghetti noodles were also extra al dente because it had nothing to cook in. The sausage and broccoli rabe were just like sausage and broccoli rabe you could get anywhere else.

Carbonara $12 (crispy pancetta, parmigiano, sauteed organic yolk, black pepper)
YUMMMMM, they did this classic combo justice. Wasn't too heavy/creamy, so it was really easy to clear the plate. Good contrast to the chitarra dish, highly recommended by the restaurant (and by me!).

*We asked them why only some of them were made with fresh pastas (The ones with *asterisks), and they said they tried out the combos and sometimes some ingredients just don't work well with fresh pastas. For example, since the carbonara already has a lot of egg yolk in it, if you combine it with noodles that are also made with egg yolk, it just gets too sticky and heavy. Also, the fresh pastas are generally less al dente.

The -1 star was due to the fact that our order was severely delayed (they did apologize profusely and gave us a free dessert, super sweet of them!!!), and that they actually got our arancini balls order incorrect (we ordered 2 beef ragu, 2 peas, and 2 crabmeat, but ended up getting 3 peas, and only 1 crabmeat, sigh). Lastly, when we sat down, the restaurant was like a sauna…10 minutes in, they finally decided to close the doors and turn on the AC. Hopefully they'll keep that up now that summer is really here! The owners really do seem like genuinely nice people who care about their customers and want to make sure they are having a good time at their restaurant, can't wait to come back and try the rest of the spaghettis!

  8. Came here on a weekend around 830 PM last weekend. I came with about a group of 6, and sat all the way in the back where the kitchen entrance was. The food came out fairly quickly. I ordered the salmon asparagus pasta. Pretty flavorful but also very heavy. A lot of creme and cheese. When the pasta comes out, they provide a side of parmesan, and pepper. What made the meal really unenjoyable was how hot it was. I was literally sweating while I was eating. I wanted to try to their desserts but I just wanted to leave the place ASAP.

My advice to management: Install a fan or something in the back, it was horrendous.
My advice to people who come here in large groups who will be stuck in the back: Do not come here on a hot day/ or night.
