  1. So I was exhausted after all the walking down the Brooklyn bridge and was desperately looking for a mid afternoon protein fix and found this place. It's very close to the bridge and is located in an interesting neighborhood in the downtown. The place is tiny, no where to sit. Just order your stuff, pay and leave.

I like that they have different kinds of protein powder from different makers, so you have an option to choose in case you have a preference. You can mix and match fruits and veggies of your choice. They have four sizes available. I paid $7 for an 8oz drink. The guy behind the counter is friendly and the service is fast.

  2. This was the worst smoothie that I have ever had in my life! I drank half of it and then threw the rest in the garbage. And the half that I did drink i forced. I got a basic strawberry and banana, very simple and it tasted horrible! I don't know if it was the type of yogurt they put in or if it was even yogurt who knows! Ive had smoothies from many different places and i even make them myself at home and I have never tasted anything like this. I would definitely not recommend coming here. There is a stamina directly across the street with way better tasting drinks.

  3. Local place that I patronize.  Likes fresh vegetables and fruits.  No powders.  Dislikes.  Store is small, as in tiny, and when it's crowded I don't want to be there.  It is also often in need of a cleaning.  They have a more limited selection of fruits and veggies but the price is a little less than some other juice places.

  4. The following phrases bother me:

    "raw diet"
"juicing" (as an intransitive verb) (or, verbal noun) (or gerund) (whatever)
    "liquid fast"

Yeah yeah, I'm full of judgements. Our bodies give us awesome things, why respond with ill-researched and shallowly rationalized fad diets?

…That said, I admit "green juice" is pretty tasty. And I enjoy drinking unnaturally green things in general (absinthe included, so you know this is true color-based insanity). Health King is as no-frills as you can get for a lifestyle that comes packaged in "systems." I'd walked past a hundred times and always thought it was some hole-in-the-wall hot dog place (like Papaya King, to give you a sense of the decor). It's not. They have a ton of fruits and veggies on display for your pulverizing pleasure – just MOUNTAINS of kale – as well as full smoothie-making capabilities.

They're no better or cheaper than anywhere else, really. For green juices and smoothies, you can also try Stamina (yelp.com/biz/stamina-gri…), Magic Mix (yelp.com/biz/magic-mix-j…), Long Island Bagel Cafe (yelp.com/biz/long-island…), even the local Key Food (yelp.com/biz/55-fulton-m…), all just steps away, at the same $7-ish for a pitifully small cup. The good (and only distinctive) part about Health King is that it's grungier than it is trendy, and you can watch them shove your chosen greens into the juicer right after you order.

  5. This place was my absolute go-to during a week of juicing that I did. Located right in the middle of Fidi, it provides a healthy alternative in the midst of a sea of unhealthy but delicious food.

My only qualm with the place is it's really small and gets a bit claustrophobic if there are more than 3 people in there, but other than that, it's perfect. They have every vegetable and fruit you can think of which are used to make juices and smoothies. The prices are also pretty decent for the amount that you get. A large size juice or smoothie is definitely the best value.

Both employees crank the juices out at a steady pace so you're never in there for more than five minutes. Juices are also well mixed. I find that no one fruit or vegetable is over bearing or over used. Some places show no care regarding portion control and completely ruin the juice, this place consistently makes a perfectly mixed juice that tastes great.

This is definitely the best juice & smoothie place in the area. Stamina, another place close by, makes juices and smoothies as well. However, there's are poorly mixed with some ingredients overpowering the rest of the drink. Health King is definitely the way to go!

  6. I'm glad that I found this place. I was going to make the hike to juice generation after my acupuncture appointment today and walked right past here and decided to give it a try.

It's no frills as you can read from other reviews. Small place, but with good options. They actually carry one of my protein powders I use at home for shakes, and since I was headed to the gym after I decided to do a vanilla isopure protein with strawberry and banana. Pricing was reasonable and they carry other good little snacks like macro bars that I like.

I'll definitely be back to try some other options.

  7. **UPDATE TO MY REVIEW ON 6/1/15**  And ONLY for the Green Juices.

Given my decadent lifestyle at times (traveling, restaurants with rich foods, cocktail lounges, wine bars, dive bars, etc.), I try to drink 2-4 natural green juices per week to ensure I get some healthy nutrients lol.

Health King is my sport for that, and primarily just for Green Juices.  I usually request All Greens (Spinach, Kale, Cucumber, Celery) with Red Apple (to soften the bitterness of the greens).

The vegetables they use are pretty fresh and they usually have the basics, like spinach, kale & cucumber, but sometimes are out of other stuff – beets, carrots, red apple, etc, if you come here late.

Overall, though, a good place with prices that are not too expensive – $8 for a Large Green Juice which is fairly priced..

And I actually prefer this location to their other two locations in Midtown East & West.  This location is a lot smaller, but they seem to be faster and more efficient.

I can't speak to the fruit shakes or protein shakes, but if you're looking for that, I'd go to Juice Generation instead a few blocks away on Maiden Lane as they have more vegan protein options, which are healthier in my opinion.  Health King just has the packaged stuff loaded with chemicals – Myoplex, MetRx, etc, which I personally think is not healthy and can't stand.

But for fresh Green Juice, Health King is great!
