Sanpanino

“One stop eating in a humbly sized box–they are a coffee shop, gelateria, bakery and serve up some mad delicious paninis!”

“#6: crisp yet fluffly foccacia, olive oil & balsamic vinegar, fresh mozzarella and prosciutto di parma sliced fresh for your order.”

“Their Arnold Palmers are also pretty tasty, especially because they use their own fresh lemonade.”

  1. Cute Italian deli.  Fresh sandwiches and soup.  They have 14 specialty sandwiches or they will make it you way.  There is limited seating so you might want to come off hours.  Staff is nice.  Prices are reasonable.

  2. What a delicious shop. We could smell the goodness before even stepping inside and once I feasted my eyes on the gigantic and shiny mozzarella balls I knew this would be a satisfying lunch.

I sampled the last sandwich on the menu, I believe the #14 and was tempted to tweak their recommendation to add hot peppers or something else yummy. I held back and it was perfectly balanced just the way it was designed. Love that they offer Arnold Palmers. We were in and out with our hunks of bread, meat and cheese love in less than seven minutes.

  3. 3.5 stars…

It's a Hispanic run Italian sandwich shop. It's a small place, mostly take out but they do have a long bench and some tables to accommodate about 5 people. They have 14 signature sandwiches (15 if you count the meatball only available on Wednesday), all are about $10 and a couple soup options. They make the sandwiches to order and you can get them cold or hot (grilled in a pannini press). I got the prosciutto di parma (prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, sliced plum tomatoes, fresh basil, and balsamic) minus the tomatoes. It was a fine sandwich with good flavors, I just think the price is a tad high for what you get, especially considering you can get a better version of this for approximately the same price at Sergimmo Salumeria (on 9th Ave and 36th st). If you're looking for a solid sandwich in the neighborhood you can't go wrong with Sanpanino but it's not worth a special trip for.

Oh yeah. Oh baby. This is the hot spot. Tight and cozy. I know you want to eat in. Snuggle up to that stranger there. It's ok. We're all friends. I just wandered in off the street and look, a little pesto here, some mozzarella there. If you want to get kinky: Goat cheese. Gluten intolerance is not an option here. Sorry baby, you can't pass up that bread… And the soup?!?! If the sandwich wasn't enough for you, slurp those lentils up. Mmmm yeah. Just like that.

  5. Tasty Italian sandwiches from a quaint cafe in the West Village. The sandwiches are a bit expensive ($8-$10) and moderately sized, but they are quite tasty.

The service is hit or miss. I asked for no tomatoes one time and they gave me tomatoes. I asked for a #2 another time and they gave me a #3. Everyone makes mistakes.

Best plan of attack: Grab a sandwich and head across the street to St. Luke and eat in the garden.

  6. Amazing little sandwich place. They have great sliced meat, excellent focaccia bread, and tons of options. We come here most weekends for a lunch stop complete with cookie and lemonade. The guys are super nice! Better to take out and sit outside than in the small space I'd say.

  7. It should be no secret to anyone I love me a good sandwich. And I've been a loyal consumer of Sanpanino's #6 Proscuitto di Parma (with fresh mozzarella, sliced plum tomatoes, fresh basil, balsamic, and olive oil) for more than a few years running now – really, since I started working in the area (man, we go way back). And when these ingredients are fresh (which is almost always), there are few other sandwiches that can really compete.

It's simple, yes, and modestly sized even. But it's the focaccia that catapults this sammy into elite territory. It's a must, must, must. Don't be a hero (get it? do you?) and even pretend there's another option. Thicker than cornbread, yet as light as a feather, one bite will make you wish this shit sandwiched every sandwich.

Recently, however, after years of a strict #6 diet, on a whim, I went with their Insalata di Tonno (scoops of tuna surrounded by diced tomatoes, chopped celery, diced red onions, cucumbers, roasted red peppers, balsamic, olive oil, and black pepper on a bed of greens). And the good news is – I'm a big fan. The aroma alone makes the girls in my office envious, followed by a sad, sad retreat back to their sub-par salads. Then, when they aren't looking, I secretly scarf down the $1 Chocolate Chip Cookie I grabbed at the cashier.

Be forewarned, schoolchildren flock here during lunchtime. And, honestly, while it's not Sanpanino's fault, and while I do not have anything against the little ones (I was a tutor and a summer camp counselor back in the day, if you can believe it), the kids can be a minor deterrent. Sanpanino is tiny and students descend upon this place like the plague. Yes, their sandwiches and salads are fantastic, but if we're being honest, sometimes I have to gauge my rugrat tolerance when I see a swarm of students surrounding Sanpanino like cops outside a hostage situation.

I am so not ready to be a parent anytime soon.

  8. I randomly found Sanpanino while searching for new lunch options near work. And I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Sanclassico sandwich which was sopressata, mortadella, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, basil, balsamic & oil. Pressed just till slightly crispy it was perfect and so refreshing from the other options in the area. I will definitely be returning
