Okay laa3! A deli in this vicinity that opens late to provide substance (aka my dinner) prior to attending an open-mike poetry reading nearby. The server actually greeted me before fulfilling my order, which is extreme rare for hospitality now. One Blueberry muffin at $2.00 was moist though not all that to pique my palette, amid my dislike for blueberry.
You want cheap, you get cheap.
This place is located conveniently on 14th street, stop in for a quick beverage, or late nite sandwich, and stay as long as you like. Comfortable tables, even high chair seating in the front window for 14th street people watching!
I grabbed a fruit salad and a green tea. They have tons of teas and coffee too of course. Plus did I mention they have a lot of easy seating? Tables even.
One thing tonight they closed a few minutes before 11pm. So I guess it depends on the day!
I can't comment on a lot of the things that people have said about this place, as I only had the salad.*
But what I can say about this place is that they do, in fact, have a name-your-own-ingredients salad here, and that's a huge plus in this neighborhood. With friends living just a few blocks away, I had struggled to find one of these places and, naturally, came across City Gourmet while walking the opposite direction of the way I usually go.
The salad choices are plentiful, though they're not going to be confused for a Westside Market with the amount they put on your salad. It's fair, though, and they have a good selection to choose from. All the basics are there and the only real downside was the drenching of dressing I got. That might actually be saladista(tm) specific, so I won't knock 'em for it.
As a bonus, with my appx. $7.50 small salad, I got a free can of Diet Coke with my order. You will ALWAYS win me over with a free can of Diet Coke.**
* – Boy, if you could only hear the stories I'm NOT telling.
** – Just sayin', ladies.
I was in the Union Square area on Saturday evening and decided I was in the mood for a grilled chicken sandwich, but Subway was out of the question. Walking down 14th Street, I came upon City Gourmet. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich on a 7 grain hero with mozzarela, tomatoes, sweet peppers, and honey mustard. I was definitely satisfied with my sandwich. The bread was fresh and unlike Subway, the chicken was "real" and not processed. If I worked in the area, this would probably be a normal lunch spot for me.
The sandwich menu is pretty extensive. The pastries don't look too appetizing, so I wouldn't recommend them.
I had a medium coffee and a breakfast wrap to-go on a Friday morning.
Coffee- nothing special. There isn't a "station" for you to milk/sugar your own coffee… You have to specifically ask and they'll do it for you.
Breakfast wrap- I got bacon, egg, and cheese on whole wheat wrap. It was nothing fantastic, but it was a decent portion and was pretty good!
Wait- I waited about 5 minutes for the breakfast wrap to be made.
One of the best breakfast sots we stopped by in NYC, you get amazing value and the food was pretty good as well. The portions are quite large, we were stuffed after ordering $8 worth of food. I had an egg white omelette which I love and I'm glad that it was an option.
There was also lots of fresh fruit which made me happy and while they weren't the speediest at making the order it was fairly busy. There are lots of places to sit and enjoy your meal or you can take it to go. Regardless, I would definitely come here again!
Mmmm hot slimy turkey…delicious! I ordered from here this afternoon and was left less than satisfied with my decision. I hopped onto Seemlessweb and chose to make my own sandwich which was Boars Head Turkey and cheese on multigrain bread. The sandwich that arrived was hot and the turkey was most certainly not Boars Head. As a born and raised New Yorker I know when you're trying to pass off some nasty cheap cold cuts on me! And while they did call me to let me know they were out of multigrain bread and asked if I would like it on pita bread instead (I agreed) I did not think my sandwich would be heated up. I seriously could hardly even eat half of the sandwich, that's how repulsive it was. This place is definitely NOT gourmet.
Super friendly service, free wifi, and open somewhat late. Can't go wrong with that.
