Banh Mi Zon

“but it didn't matter because I was too preoccupied with the delicious combo of cilantro, pickled radish, and mmm pate.”

“Really nice place, everything made meticulously by hand, good banh mi, very nice summer rolls, green papaya salad.”

  1. This place has an Asian fusion vibe going on. We made the mistake of going to a more authentic Vietnamese hole in the wall a few days before, so the food here was more lackluster in comparison. That being said, overall it still is a great place to get banh mi.

I ordered the Grilled Catfish rice plate. The catfish was kind of dry. I had this amazing claypot curry catfish rice dish at another Vietnamese place and this one paled in comparison. One thing I did like about this dish was it wasn't sweet. The Grilled Pork Patties Rolls was an interesting take on the regular shrimp spring roll. The black pepper pork had a nice kick and was especially tasty dipped in the peanut hoisin sauce. Really loved all that black pepper.

Although this place probably specializes in banh mi, I only had a bite of the sardine banh mi. It tasted a lot like tuna. Should probably order a regular one next time. Next time I really want to try their coconut beef curry banh mi. It looked pretty messy to eat, but my friend seemed to really enjoy it.

The store is really tiny and clean with nice people running it. My friend accidentally ordered the catfish banh mi instead of the rice plate and they were able to change my order.

  2. It's a really good flavored sandwich. Only complaint is that the bread is super hard. The other thing is that when I visited they were out of noodles for all the rolls. That was a bummer. I'll give it a second change. Oh and they take card or cash.

  3. I stopped by at an off hour, so there was no wait. I don't know if this is typical during lunch/dinner hours, but I'm glad I got to order right away! The girl at the counter was really sweet, as were the other employees that I interacted with. I also appreciate that they accept credit cards – I don't always remember to stop by the ATM before I head out for the day.

I ordered the zon sandwich (#1) with the pate, Vietnamese ham/salami, and pork floss, and it was excellent!! I haven't had pork floss in a banh mi before and haven't had it in a really long time, so I enjoyed the texture and flavor it added to the sandwich. The sandwich itself was large, and I could only have half of it for dinner (but then I ate the rest of it for a midnight snack anyway..).

I wouldn't say that this banh mi is the best I've had in EV (I'll leave that title to the banh mis at Xe May's) and I wish they had some sort of lunch special that included a drink! However, they do solid work with this Vietnamese sandwich, and I can't wait to be back to try the rest of their menu!

  4. I have to say, this banh mi spot is legit! Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to eat inside the restaurant so I cannot write a review about that, but I did delivery instead. I was skeptical at first, but of course after reading fellow Yelpers reviews, I decided to try it. I ordered the grilled pork chop rolls and the chicken sandwich. The grilled pork chop rolls were kind of disappointing. It was nothing special really and I didn't think the pork chop went well as a "summer roll" style. I should have stuck with the traditional summer rolls (with shrimps), but wanted to try something new. Wasn't really what I expected. However, the chicken sandwich was better than I expected! The chicken was soft and the bread was toasted just right, the flavors were authentic compared to other authentic Viet restaurants I have tried. The only thing is that it has a mild spice to it and I wish they stated that on the menu. I don't remember them saying it was spicy. I don't really eat spicy, but this spice wasn't bad. Went well with the sandwich and it was mild and bearable. Really flavorful and tasty sandwiches. Would def order from them again and maybe try the catfish one. Looks good.

  5. I got the vegetarian banh mi (9.25) since the catfish one was sold out. I wasn't a huge fan of the contents in the veggie banh mi, since there was a disproportionate amount of mushroom compared to tofu, but the banh mi itself was really good. The pickled carrots and daikon were super flavorful and the bread was perfectly toasted. I couldn't really taste the peanut sauce, but the banh mi was still very flavorful.

It is a self-serve spot, so no tax and optional tip is a huge plus. It seats about 10 people, and the counterperson is super nice.

I definitely want to come back and try the catfish.

  6. Banh Mi Zon…you could get it.

    Environment: Small, clean space.

    Customer Service: Nice & attentive.

Chicken Sandwich: I cried the first time I ate this. I was like " How can something be so refreshing, sweet and spicy the same time? There were carrots, cucumbers, savory chicken, spicy mayo, dalkon soy sauce, cilantro and crispy bread. When you are a food addict you open your sandwich so you can see what taste so damn good!  I'm getting hot just thinking about my food experience here. The length of the sandwich is bigger than a subway sandwich. That's all you need to know bebe. I come out Banh Mi Zon with a beer belly all "de time."

  7. Best Banh Mi I've had in Manhattan.  The curry chicken one is oozing with flavor, dripping in curry sauce with the pickled vegetables…. OMG to die for…. Now I'm Vietnamese and my brother owns a Banh Mi shop … So I've had my fair share of the Vietnamese/French Inspired Sandwich but …..Banh Mi Zon still blew my mind.

Try their signature Banh Mi as well.  The dried pork on the Banh Mi Zon reminds me of my childhood when my mom would buy tubs of the stringy hair life texture pork.  So delicious, never thought to put it in a Banh Mi before, very creative.

This Banh Mi shop will blow your mind.  Try it, worth traveling to EV for!  Can't wait to treat my friends from out of town to this place!

  8. Came here for lunch one day. If you want good food, come here. Like right now.

A little gem that should be more popular than it is, they serve quality food with nothing but the best ingredients. And their banh mi, to die for. Ingredients made fresh and the unique combinations stuffed into the crispy baked bread makes every bite like a step closer to nirvana.

Also, the new owner Brian is an awesome guy. Made our first experience a good time and even shared a little history about Vietnamese food in NYC and the restaurant itself, how it came to be, his passion and their mission to serving memorable food. Ask him about it!

    Highly recommend visiting.
