  1. I come from LA ~ SGV  specifically where they are known for amazing Asian food, better than LA's Chinatown actually. Needless to say, I'm a snob when it comes to good asian food, plus I'm Chinese so that makes it worse! We came here on a rainy Friday evening and it was full of people.

We came here because I was craving pho for the past few weeks. I can say that this place definitely has the NY feel as the servers are pretty rough around the edges. I ordered the pho and asked for a plate of onions, lime and siracha on the side so I can make my "own dish". The server then replied, "No. No. You can not make your own dish." Uhm, okay. Really? I was so shocked by this I didn't even know how to reply. The pho already comes with onions and lime and I'm not allowed to ask for extra? Really? You can't just charge me extra for this?

We both ordered pho and ended up just asking another server for the onions and siracha which he brought with no issues. The pho definitely hit the spot but it wasn't bursting with flavor like I am used to at other places. I always judge the pho by the broth, I mean you can't really mess up the noodles and I always get the meat on the side anyways so that it's not too overcooked. The broth was meh.

The food was mediocre and the service wasn't great. The place is meh at best.

  2. Tasty Vietnamese spot in a surprising location. It was perfect for lunch after the Guggenheim during our Staycation.

We did NOT want one of the ubiquitous Italian, French… Bistros/Cafes that are strewn on every street in this area. We noticed that the French cafe across the street was chock full of 'ladies who lunch'. We Bee-lined it to Vietnaam.

Everything we ordered was delicious and had a good spice kick. The service was excellent – we were doted on. Also, the prices were very reasonable and it felt like a fine dining spot. A completely different experience than Vietnamese spots in Chinatown or LES. Presumably because this restaurant is located in a bougie 'hood.

What I appreciated was the large selection of fish/seafood. Since I don't eat beef, chicken, pork Vietnamese spots are usually hit or miss for me. But there is literally something for everyone at Vietnaam.

  3. Not quite sure if Naam sounds like "nom, nom, nom" or "ma'am" with an "n" – hmmmm

Anyway the food here is delicious and satisfying.

    Food:
Fried whole fish – delicious, lightly battered with some sweet sauce on top
    Green beans – very good
Duck fried rice – fairly good
Shrimp lollipop with a slice of sugar cane – delicious with the fish sauce
Beef bo luc lac – good altho the beef could've been cooked a little less
    Banana sticky rice – good
    Peanut mochi – very good

  4. A little pricey but the portions are enormous. The pho is decent and the grilled meats have good flavor. It's not aawesome but it's better than aaverage for New York Vietnamese food.

  5. Not the best pho I've ever had but certainly the best in NYC (appreciated).  Their whole fish though is fantastic, as is the laksha – Yum!  I also really liked the shrimp lollipop and sticky rice banana pouch.  In general, everything I've had was of consistently good taste. Tsingdao beer is also a bonus for me.

  6. My family and I love Vietnamese cuisine. We were in the city today, heading home and I was in the mood for a fish sandwich. I found Vietnaam; the reviews and food pics looked amazeballs, especially the sole banh mì. When we arrived, we found street parking fairly quickly and right down the block, the place was pretty empty and we just made it because there was a downpour soon after being seated. They offer outdoor seating but we declined due to the impending weather.

We ordered quite a few items because I love trying EVERYTHING…ok, calming down. We started with Flank Steak Summer Rolls and Garlic Chive Shrimp Moon Dumplings. Both dishes were really good. The dumplings tasted so good and the rolls were huge. The accompanying sauces were very tasty as well.

They have Vietnamese coffee, both hot and iced, which tasted very nice. I love the coffee. It's so much better than the swill they sling in Dunkin Donuts. I ordered a Ginger Iced Tea but it's sweetened already and I just couldn't deal. I like my teas unsweetened. We also asked for a cold sake. There's only one size but it was a nice reprieve from the tea.

Hubby ordered Beef Bun Xao, a very flavourful noodle dish that filled him up. My son got a Roast Pork Shoulder Banh Mì and I ordered their Classic Filet of Sole Banh Mì. I also ordered the Duck Fried Rice and Boneless Chicken Thigh Banh Mì. Everything tasted very good. The Banh Mì are great, although I feel like there could have been a bit more meat. The bread was nice and crusty on the outside but still soft. Some places where we've had those sandwiches serve them on really hard bread that ends up cutting my gums and the roof of my mouth. The sole was moist, with a perfectly browned breaded coating. I threw some jalapeños on that bad boy and ate half. I polished off some of the chicken banh mì as well. It was super juicy with a smoky, charred flavor, like they grilled it; it smelled and tasted divine. Lastly, the duck fried rice was great! It had a nice ducky flavour without being gamey but it definitely could have used a couple of squeezes of fresh lime juice.

Everything we ordered was good. No complaints about the food. The portions are big and enough to share and try a few things for variety. We had plenty of food to take home. The service was excellent. The staff was attentive and helpful when answering questions about the menu and they all chip in so you're not searching for you server. We'll definitely return if in the area.

  7. Good food, good service and right price.

I was with my Meetup group and we just came out of the Guggenheim. We were looking for a place to eat that could accommodate the group and different dietary needs. The organizer decided to go to Whole Foods. Yeah, I don't think so, and I wasn't the only one that didn't like that idea. I'm from NY and there are too many restaurants to go to Whole Foods. A member of the group suggested Vietnaam which was just up the street–yes, let's do it!

As for food, I got the pho bok choy with roasted pork. The broth was fantastic and the pork was delicious. I just wished that they used rice noodles instead of egg noodles. I also got bubble Thai iced tea which was okay–they OD'd on the tapioca pearls.

It was about 10 of us and they were able to accommodate us just fine. They even gave us separate checks–some places won't do it if they group it too large. Also, it was nice that they gave us moist towelettes.

All in all, I had a good time at Vietnaam–I'll be sure to try out some other dishes the next time I'm home.

  8. This place is great. My boyfriend ordered a Banh Mi, I ordered veggie fried rice, and we both had cocktails. The service was great, we had no problem getting a table, and the food was delicious. I ended up eating way more than I was hungry for just because it was so good. We'll definitely be back as we saw about 382309307 other things on the menu we wanted to try but just didn't have the room in our bellies for.
