  1. Always one of my favorite places to have a meal, I'm surprised I didn't review it yet. I love their seafood dishes, especially the crab cakes! They are freshly made & melt in your mouth. I have also tried the linguini & clams, shrimp scampi, shrimp parm, mussels and calamari. If you aren't a fish lover, they do have other options, but I recommend trying a seafood dish. I love the nautical feel inside, but it can be a bit chilly at times. Parking can be difficult because the marina area can get crowded.

  2. What a cute little gem in SI!   We came here to celebrate a birthday recently and I was pleasantly surprised!  I am normally the one to choose the restaurants since I am extremely picky so I was apprehensive on whether or not I would enjoy my meal here and I did!

The place is right by the dock and there is street parking.  The people that work here are so friendly!  I didn't get a chance to ask for our waitress's name, but she was such a doll!   She was an older lady and was so so so friendly.  I couldn't have asked for better service!   We also needed help with our baby carriage and they were so helpful.

The food was amazing.  I wasn't sure what to expect from the seafood and I was in for a surprise.

Seafood Tier – this is served cold with some cold shrimp, cold lobster and oysters.  I didn't eat this, but my dining partners said it was good!

Hot Antipasto – really really good!   I loved how it was a mix of everything from baked clams, baked mussels, calamari, veggies and stuffed mushrooms.  I would definitely order this again and I highly recommend this dish.  Note – it's not on the  menu, but ask for it like we did =)

I got the seafood combo which came with fish, shrimp, scallops and veggies.  This dish was so good and it was the perfect portion size.   I would order this again too!   All of the entres came with salads and I wasn't expecting that so that was pretty cool.

I don't remember what my other dining partners ordered, but everyone said their dishes were good.  Give this place a shot!   It's a true gem in the neighborhood.  I'll be back =)

  3. I come to this place frequently, and I just love their early bird special. Who can beat it? I am almost afraid to go into details because I don't want to ruin the secret. The food is really good. My husband always gets the linguine with clam sauce, and I usually go for the eggplant parm. or the shrimp Orechette. They serve you hot bread with butter, eggplant caponata. The Caesar salad is really good. My kids love the chicken parm and lasagna.I could eat just the calamari as a meal! The special includes a bottle of wine, which is pretty decent for being free! I will go back again and again and again and again.

My only complaint is that the cocktails are on the pricey side, but they are very good.

  4. This place is really nice. I like that its in the marina and im happy they reopened after Sandy.  The decor is a bit dated and not as romantic as it could be. Coles has a bar which gets filled up quickly. The waiter was nice and went out of his way to make this a special night.

We started with grilled shrimps wrapped in proscuitto and drizzled with a grand mariner sauce.  They were cooked perfectly. You tasted the smokiness of the wood saltiness of proscuitto and sweetness of the sauce. It went so well together. We also got crab cakes. They had a lot of flavor and large chunks of crab.  It had a balsamic reduction which went well with it.

For dinner i had surf and turf and he had scallops organata. Both were perfectly executed. However surf and turf is not on the menu. You must ask for it. The chef was happily able to prepare it for me.

Im happy that places like this are starting to thrive after hurricane sandy. I do wish though that they wouldnt over charge on such petty things like soda when spending so much on a meal. The least you can do is give free refills on sodas that small.

  5. Came here for a holiday dinner party and I sure did have me a good time. The waitress was super cool and also very helpful and attentive so KUDOS to her! I enjoyed my whole seafood pasta with mussels, clams, calamari in red sauce and spaghetti. We also had mussels in red wine sauce, baked clams, a huge sampler platter that had from fried mozzarella, veal, eggplant and other good stuff. Theres a full open bar and theres a great bartender who does some cool magic tricks at the same time! LOL I can't tell you about prices because it was already all set up and planned but I see from the other reviews that you can't go wrong here. I loved the view too right by the marina with all the boats and I know in the summer this place is a good location because you have the nice Marina Cafe and Tiki bar across the way. I know parking can suck huge lobster tails but you can eventually find something because people are always in and out and when the weather ain't that frigid theres more parking down the marina. I would def come back here again. I enjoyed the service and owner and also the dessert part was the best nothing wrong with cannoli, tiramisu and chocolate cake with a nice capucchino !

  6. You can't beat Cole's weekday price-fixe menu. It is a steal! The mussel app was spot on, with a generous mound of mussels in a nice broth. The salmon in mustard cream sauce was cooked perfectly and served with a nice veggie melody. The free bottle of wine also wasn't too bad. If you are looking for a good value and some decent seafood, give Cole's a shot.

  7. I came here coz it was my last day and wanted to go somewhere outside of Manhattan. Took the ferry over to Staten Island and decided to have dinner right at the water 🙂 I finally ate a lobster in NY! It was as good as people say, I could not stop. The food was so good, my fiancé in his words said I ignored him for 20 mins and devoured my lobster dipped in garlic butter. Every bite was juicy, salty like the sea and so so fresh. Next time I need to order like a 2lb lobster to eat!!! So yummy

  8. I was somewhat apprehensive at first when entering Coles Dockside and observing huge tables of families celebrating various spring season events, like communions, quinceanaras, Mother's Day and weddings. The obligatory child in a white dress jumping around thinking they are the center of the world? (And equally indulging parents who oblige her every whim?) Check.

But when nestling over to the bar to wait for the arrival of my parents, and being greeted by the friendly bar tender, my resistance was quickly disarmed. Another guest at the bar even offered me his seat so I could sit next to my wife as he relocated to an open solo seat. Such hospitality was foreign to me but most welcome. (And in Staten Island, a borough that has been fodder for many a comedian.)

You may recall back in October a super storm by the name of Sandy. Coles and other nearby restaurants were right in the path of the storm. It's hard to imagine now the scenes of flooding and deprivation but the Great Kills Marina that Coles resides in was very much a ground zero scene. Slowly but surely business and livelihood have reopened, defying Sandy and returning to normalcy.

On a Saturday night, the place was booming and that is really a gem of a Sandy recovery story. After spending a comfortable 3 hours at Coles, I was happy to do my part to support a Sandy-impacted business.

The dinner standout for me must start at the end with the dessert selections. A brownie ice cream sandwich was the perfect combination of warm brownie and chilled vanilla ice cream. It was a dessert that inspires me to try warming up brownies in the home and adding a middle layer of ice cream. Dunkin Donuts may have a limited run donut sandwich but may want to explore the whole brownie sandwich concept.

Each dessert is $7 and can be enhanced with a side of ice cream or drizzled with 43, Chambord or another liqueur I can't recall. Dessert #2 for the table was a plate called a 'banana butte'. No, not a banana boat but 'butte' which I googled for in the restaurant but could not find any examples online. I now realize after examining and eating it that the shape of the dessert did resemble a butte, or  isolated hill with steep, often vertical sides and a small, relatively flat top.

Except that this hill was composed of sliced bananas, a thin wafer-like cookie and chantilly cream. I had to do the obligatory combination of both desserts, having a spoonful of brownie, ice cream, Chantilly cream and cookie and nearly entered a state of dessert nirvana.

The desserts have really pushed the review into 4 star territory. Otherwise, my salmon entree with dijonnaise sauce, completed with mixed veg was good but not grandiose and drool inducing 16 hours later. Coles offers up a seafood selection that includes salmon, mahi mahi, crab legs, a lobster special, tuna and other fruits of the sea. The non-seafood eater can find that other meats are well represented along with pasta plates.

Our waiter arrived at the perfect time to inquire how the meal was progressing and gave us plenty of time to enjoy the evening. Our reserved table was right by the window and gave us a view of the numerous yachts that make up the marina. A carafe of water made self-refills very easy.

So dinner for 4, including a bottle of Rioja, two appetizers, four entrees and two desserts came out to $170. For special occasion celebrations, Coles is a fine choice and even the casual diner can find items on the menu for under $20.

I like to think that every bite of the brownie sandwich was a way of helping out the Sandy recovery effort. These businesses definitely need hungry people and Coles will easily satisfy.
