  1. In the mood for a bagel with lox I stopped by Essen on my walk from 20th street to penn station.

They have a hot food bar, cold food/sale bar and lotssssss and lotsssss of sandwiches to choose from.

The "nova soctia salmon" sandwich came with lox, cream cheese, red onion and tomato on your choice of bagel. I chose a whole wheat bagel and asked to sub cream cheese for avocado. The guy told me that would be $1 extra. It end nice of him to tell me and it didn't change my mind one bit. When I got my sandwich it was a scrumptious looking tower of goodness. He forgot to sub the cream cheese for avocado and gave me both. I didn't fret I just dug right in. The combo was deeeeeeeeelicious and the bagel tasted so fresh (crunchy outside and soft inside). I should've taken a picture but it was so good I just inhaled the whole thing.

All in all a good experienced. I'd come back!

  2. Situated in Chelsea on 6th avenue the footprint of this deli is large but is welcome in the neighborhood as we need a good fast deli that serves a variety of things for the corporate folks and those who live in the area who needs a quick meal. Large ground floor with a self serve prepared meals area where it's pick and choose and weighed for pricing. On the right is chopped salad bar area and to the left is the asian inspired items of sushi, ramen, wok fired entrees. Towards the back are the drinks, soups and the large sandwich preparation area.

Went for the sandwich as it's a decent lunch. Jimmy T breaded chicken cutlet with mozzerella, and grilled veggies. All were fresh ingredients prepared quickly on a nicely soft fresh hero roll. The juices and smoothies are made well with fresh ingredients. Hot food prepared section whether you go for breakfast of lunch is spot on. Highlights were the soft shell crab, pork belly, and chicken picata. Had the sushi as well but i'd skip those as they come off as prepared way ahead of time and are refrigerated for so long that the rice come out tough. Almost like supermarket sushi. Towards the lower quality of fish.

Price point is great for the masses as they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is a large upstairs area as well where you can sit and have your meal. Very comfy.

  3. When I became upset that the nearby Trader Joe's had a line outside the door, I walked away and wandered into Essen Fast Slow Food. The name is stupid. They should change it.
This place is huge, has an extensive hot food bar, from what I observed from the entrance, and seems relatively clean. I decided to get a smoothie to brighten up my mood. I also had just left the gym so why not?
I order some berry and banana concoction at the smoothie stand and the guy, who I swear was pretending to be busy, asks me what's in it. That's NEVER a good sign but as exhausted and annoyed as I was, I decided to play along. I read off the list from the menu. Cool. He adds wildberries although I never said wildberries. Whatever– an extra berry won't hurt.
He makes a huge smoothie and gives me the extra in addition to the smoothie I ordered. The smoothie tastes great but it's warm. YUCK. The fruit isn't really kept cool, nor is ice added. I appreciate the latter since I hate paying for ice but I needed a cold smoothie. Also their blender didn't seem to blend the seeds of the wildberries too well resulting in an unpleasant drinking experience. I immediately regret letting him add the extra berry. Boo hoo.
So though the guy was nice, and the price was right (less than $7 for a pretty big "small" smoothies), I won't return here for a smoothie. Looking for a good smoothie, head to Liquiteria.
