I like this place. It's the sister bar to The Wayland, and you can kind of tell. Happy Hour is 4-7 if I remember correctly, and the major downside is that not all the drinks are on the HH special. I get it, but meh, change it, haha. $1 oysters too for HH.
The drinks here are delicious, just like they are at the Wayland. The atmosphere is relaxing, chill, and can get crowded on a friday or saturday night. Went here on the soft opening months and months ago, and it never got crowded, till more recently when there was a LINE to get in. Good for them, they deserve it.
Good Night Sonny is one of my favorite happy hour spots in the East Village. Why you ask? Well let's get into it. First off, the cocktails are excellent. I had a Lavender of Love – made with vodka, lemon juice, basil, and salt – it was light and refreshing. Second, oysters!! How can you beat fresh oysters for $1 an oyster during happy hour?! The selection changes daily but I was able to try amazing oysters from New York, Maine, Vermont, and Canada. My favorite was the Hurricane Island from New Brunswick, Canada. Third, the waitstaff is really friendly. As we sat at the bar, our bartender Andrew chatted with us about surfing, oysters (of course), international travels, and favorite cocktail bars in the city. He's a good guy and makes a mean cocktail. Andrew also mentioned to us that the bar and kitchen are open from 4pm to 4am everyday! Gotta love that! Will be back for sure; whether at 6pm or 3am remains to be seen.
In the mood for strong drinks and seafood, my friend and I stopped by for a late dinner last night. Ordering a bourbon Manhattan complete with a maraschino cherry and a few oysters and anchovy toasts to start, it soon became apparent that we had made the right choice in Good Night Sonny.
We then continued with a shares of the steamed clams and the shishito peppers, which I paired with a glass of the Pinot Grigio, and my friend with a draft of Allagash White. The clams, while slightly overcooked for my taste, were nonetheless delicious, flavored with fresh garlic and ginger, and the peppers, prepared with fresh lemon, a flavor burst!
The service was also impeccable, especially considering the constant influx of customers. All in all, as it was as good as it gets!
Yes! Believe what you've heard. Good Night Sonny is awesome. I'm a big fan of The Wayland, which is owned by the same people, and Good Night Sonny is just as well run.
This bar is candlelit, comfortable, and *cool* — without being overly crowded. And the drinks and service are on point.
Came here around 9pm on Saturday night and was able to grab a little table for myself and 2 friends without a hassle.
We ordered a bunch of different cocktails and wine. All of it was delicious. I highly recommend the To Die Dreaming in Kentucky and Dirty Bird cocktails. It was also nice to see the menu featured local wineries.
Looking forward to trying the food next time!
I really enjoyed my time at Good Night Sonny. Came here during happy hour on a Wednesday as it was just starting to get busy. My gal pal and I saddled up to the bar and chatted up the cool, yet approachable bartender. We ordered the happy hour margarita with a spicy kick. He was very accommodating and gifted in mixology because that marg hit the spot with just the right amount of heat for these two Mexicanas…twice! My gf ordered the $1 happy hour oysters and ended up throwing back a dozen.
The feel is very laid back, that of a cozy neighborhood bar. Nicely lit with natural light and lots of windows. Good Night Sonny definitely has the "approachable cool" thing down. You know you've come to a good spot, but the ambiance is still warm and the staff is happy you are there. No pretense, just a comfortable space and good drinks. We didn't sample the regular menu, but would definitely return to do just that!
This is ONLY for the oysters and bar service. Sat at the bar alone for 30 minutes before my friend met me. Ordered a gold rush, bartender was very heavy handed and made an amazing gold rush some places make it too tart or too sweet but his was just to my liking, nice and strong! After my friend got there we ordered a dozen oysters (2 of each of these)

We stopped into GNS for cocktails on a total whim this past Saturday and were very impressed. As an added bonus, they were only $12, which is significantly cheaper than your typical drink at a Manhattan cocktail bar
I had:
-Cross Eyed Bear (Naval strength rum, apple brandy, cherry cordial, sweet vermouth, peychauds bitters) – I had never heard of naval-strength rum before and was intrigued. I was told that this is one of the bar's strongest drinks, but since we were only having two cocktails each, I decided to forge ahead. The drink, as it turns out, is pretty strong, as well as tasty. With the addition of cherry cordial it kind of reminded me of a Blood and Sand, but with rum (and numerous other ingredients that a B&S doesn't have).
-A drink with gin, cucumber and dill – this is apparently new, as it's not mentioned on any of the online menus. I didn't write down the name of the drink or the few other ingredients, but the other ingredients don't matter as much, as the dill and cucumber were most definitely the stars of the beverage. We've all had gin + cucumber, so the addition of the dill was most welcome, if not perfectly integrated. It also comes with a generous amount of rim salt, with dill and cucumber added into the salt as well. I would only recommend this drink if you're looking for something refreshing, not spiritous.
He had:
-To Die Dreaming In Kentucky (Bourbon, homemade orange marmalade, vanilla, lemon juice & bitters) – I only had one sip of this, but I remember it being marvelous. Just the right amount of sweetness from the orange marmalade.
-A delicious mescal-based beaut. Forget the details…
There is also some sort of bar theme going on here, and it has to do with books, song titles, Abraham Lincoln, and Elvis. Entertainment, I guess?
Best cocktail bar around the area. Good layout with bar seating and few tables along the perimeter. Very cozy yet well lit (small space, tons of windows). Seating is not going to be easy, packed and with good reason.
Drinks are all made with fresh fruits when required. Can see them everywhere. The various bottles of bitters are also on display. Drinks are all strong yet well crafted, none of them feels like drinking a tub of rubbing alcohol. Especially the drinks where ingredients are just spirits, like Manhattan or old fashion. Bartenders can't hide behind the fruits, sweets, sour flavors in those cases. Saw a table order a glass fruit punch bowl, a bit too dainty looking though. Would skip on that.
