Man this place was hard to find, or maybe it's just me. Well if some of you are like me let me give you some quick directions. If you go to the middle of the block on 39st there is a door leading to what was called a "mall" (although it didn't look like any mall I've ever seen). It appeared to be more of a building that would house doctor's offices. Inside there are elevators going to different floors as well as a directory of all stores within the building. Unfortunately 10below was not on this list but, it is there. It's in the basement.
Now for the important part. The ice cream. It comes rolled up in little coils for 7 bucks a pop including unlimited toppings. Was it epic? No. Was it good? Yes. Has anyone ever had bad ice cream in his/her life? No. No? I didn't think so.
Pretty much the whole point of going is to watch your ice cream being handmade in front of you. I didn't have to wait very long but lines can get up to 30-40 mins. I would never wait this long for any ice cream in the world. Even if it was the best ever!
I have been to a 10below in Chinatown, Manhattan and it was my first time at the flushing location. There was a long line, but in an air conditioned building so that's a plus. Although they close at 10pm, if there is a line, they will still take all orders, which signifies great customer service. Because it's so crowded, it's hard to stand in front of the staff making your ice cream compared to the 10below chinatown. This 10below has a special, "Ain't Got No Thai Fo That", also known as the thai ice tea flavored ice cream, which is why we came here. It is delicious! This is the new age ice cream. If you have the time and patience, I would suggest you stop by.
It was more like a 3.5. This was my first official rolled ice cream and the flavors weren't bad but it was so damn sweet, I guess I am an old fart lol. It's a cool concept and I like how your ice cream is basically made to order and made from scratch right in front of you. This place is pretty popular among the younger crowd and was infested with high school kids. The unlimited toppings was pretty cool but I couldn't imagine adding much to my Key Lime Pie so I just added granola. And for what it was, $7 was super damn expensive for ice cream, was this ice cream supposed to make me younger and taller???
The food:
Key Lime Pie- Lime & Graham Cracker. It was the first option and the guy behind the counter said it was the one to try. The thing I did like about the ice cream was the super smooth consistency, it had a really good mouth feel. They also give you a pretty large portion, it doesn't look like it's that much but when you start eating it, you will realize you been eating it for a while. The main issue I had with the ice cream was it's overt sweetness, I noticed the sweetness from the very first bite. The other thing I had an issue with was the ingredients not being fully incorporated, I only had a few bites where there was a hint of lime and it felt like it was a weird hidden surprise, I wish they blended everything first before they put in on the anti-griddle. I definitely felt this ice cream was geared more of a younger demographic. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
I heard this was the most popular choice for rolled ice cream in NY. Though the ice cream itself is actually pretty good presentation could use some work. The actual ice cream rolls were rolled pretty sloppy. If this was regular ice cream then it wouldn't matter but the rolling could have been a lot better. Toppings are unlimited but the girl behind the counter kept asking us "is that all?" every time we requested a topping.
I prefer I CE NY or Juicy Spot for rolled ice cream.
Strawberry shawty is orgasmic. $7 with unlimited toppings. This place is located in the lower floor. Good thing the line wasn't long when we got there. There are about 8 selections to pick. They make the ice cream right in front of you. Watch out for the Chinese security guard standing nearby. Somehow he doesn't allow you to stand behind or outside the rope. We weren't blocking anybody and was just standing there watching them making our ice cream. The security guard acts like he owns the space lol. Other than that, we would def return if in the area. Perfect for a hot summer day.
A solid ice cream joint hidden away downstairs of the mall by inspiration and bo concept. The ice cream is melted so the core ingredient merges with the Icecream then refrozen and rolled into little swirls with toppings of your choice. The toppings are generally unlimited of choices and the presentation is often picture worthy. I had the smores flavor and it was perfect for me. Not super sweet, filling and still full of flavor.
The only downside is seating is pretty limited. They have a few tables near the fountain and by the stairs but near impossible to grab when there's a rush.
Ordering is also very confusing, you have to tell the one rolling your Icecream what toppings you like, but since the process is kind of long and the crowds distracting they often forget what you want. To be fair the workers do try their hardest and are generally responsive.
You get a decent amount for the price. I love ice cream so I can't be too critical because I enjoyed it nonetheless!
First off, super long wait! But it was totally worth it!
My first try of rolled ice cream! I have been wanting to try this style of ice cream after watching a video of it online.
For the price of $7 with unlimited topping, it's a pretty good deal. Since I would not be back in NYC anytime soon, so why not?!
I got the Matcha Made In Heaven, which was the most potent matcha that I have ever had. For those who love matcha this is the flavor for you. It is not your typical light green tea. It is very strongly flavored and has a very consistent smooth texture. I had my rolled ice cream topped with berries (strawberries, raspberry, blackberries, blueberries) and it was just heavenly. The ice cream does melt quite quickly, so if you want to take pictures, make sure to do it fast!
I would not mind trying other flavors when I get the chance. I heard that 10Below is coming to Atlanta, Georgia so I am super excited about that, since it is much closer to home.
I think I would have given this 4 stars, but I had Pink Bear only a few days before I tried 10Below and this just paled in comparison. The ice cream here is priced similarly at $7 a cup, but there's no discount like Pink Bear has.
At Pink Bear I ordered the Happy Matcha (green tea and pistachio), so I decided to order the Matcha Made in Heaven to compare (green tea and strawberry). I couldn't really taste the matcha flavor in the ice cream whereas at Pink Bear the matcha flavor was strong. The texture itself is pretty good. Not too icy, pretty creamy. I also think the people working here were not as skilled at rolling. They have unlimited toppings, but they were super boring. They only had fruit, graham crackers, marshmallows, teddy grahams, granola, oreo, nilla wafers, etc.
I had a bite of my friend's Key Lime Pie flavor. It tasted only like way too sweet vanilla. Apparently the lime was in random spots and not mixed in well. The cashier said this was a favorite among customers, but I am very glad I didn't order this flavor. I didn't wait too long but I can see how you would have to wait a while once more people line up. It's apparently popular with a lot of kids around 4pm.
When 10Below first opened in Chinatown, they were one of the first to bring this rolled ice cream craze to NYC and were definitely an interesting novelty. Now that rolled ice cream has become more established and more competitors have entered the scene, I feel that 10Below falls short in terms of quality, taste, and skill at rolling their ice cream. I wouldn't mind coming back, but Pink Bear is definitely my preferred spot.
