  1. Uhhh…. so my fourth visit to this deli absolutely did not go so well.

The usual guy at the counter was there. I asked how he was doing and he didn't acknowledge me. I thought in my head, "OK, that's odd," as I turned to the menu board. After glancing back at him, he let out a huge yawn and nodded his head ever so slightly, again remaining silent. Seeing this action as a rather unenthusiastic signal, I gave him my order of grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, and fresh mozarrella on a sub roll.

So he pops the grilled chicken in the microwave, then proceeds to the two parts of the sub roll and puts in a very large amount of mayonnaise on it. Granted, I did not ask for mayonnaise, and usually this same person would ask me first prior to dumping the mayo on. I thought to myself that it was forgivable because I didn't say anything.

Anyway, so he then turns to the member of the female persuasion behind me. All of a sudden he lights up, greeting her and taking the initiative to ask questions about her order that he should have asked me.

On the way home, I was thinking how odd that experience was. Then I realized that during my previous visits, I was never alone. During these three prior visits, I was in the company of a close female friend of mine.

When I got home, I unwrapped the sandwich and was highly disappointed. I scraped off the mayonnaise and realized there wasn't much left of the sandwich. There wasn't much lettuce at all, and the portion size was clearly smaller this time around compared to the last time I ordered here. Also, I had ordered fresh mozzarella and not only did I receive the sliced cheese, there was only one slice located on half of the sandwich.

Ok, so to the guy at the counter at 9pm on Thursday nights:

    1. She is too young for you.

    2. No offense to her, but she really wasn't that hot.

    3. As a fellow dude, I understand that you will treat the ladies in a manner different from how you act towards guys, but please, at least act civilly and focus on the task at hand. I'm not asking for a bromance here.

I suppose that next time, I will have to present myself as female in order to receive acceptable service. Since that is not possible, I probably won't be back unless I have female companionship.

  2. I was in JC downtown with friends during our bar crawl session. After hitting a couple of bars in Hoboken and JC downtown we all felt the need to feed ourselves with a quick snack. When it comes to odd hours food options, JC doesn't have many options. I think there are two delis and a other place open 24/7. We tried this deli place after the recommendation of one of my friends who lives in downtown. Surprisingly the food was good considering it was coming out the deli at 3 am in the morning. I got the chicken salad sandwich which was good.  Now I know where to go to grab a quick tasty sandwich during odd hours in JC downtown.

  3. So, if you live in downtown JC, you've been to downtown Jersey City's local 24-7 convenience store to pick up gum, Ben & Jerry's, a bag of chips, or whatever else you need at all hours of the day and night. This place is surely good for that. But, you know what else this place is good for? Sandwiches.  Delicious, fresh Boar's Head sammys.

One night after way too many beers at Barcade, I got the beer munchies and vowing never to go to HFC (Hollywood Fried Chicken) again, I stepped into this place to grab some chips.  The man behind the counter offered to make me a sandwich.  Not sure if he follows me on Yelp or if he saw the hunger gleam in my eye but, clearly he knew I was a sucker for the sandwich.

"Give me ahh turkey, some cheese, a little mayo/mustard, lettuce and tomatoes please", I asked this lovely Sandwich hero (referring to the man not the type of sandwich).  What came out was this perfect sandwich with fresh as can be deli meats and toppings.  It was delicious. It was also again 2:30 AM and 4 heavy beers down so yes everything is delicious, but, this just felt different, special.

Want to know how much this sandwich cost? Guess!  Ok, give up? $4.50.  Yes, four dollars and fifty cents for a large, fresh, late night/early morning, satisfying sandwich. I'm so excited for you, my recent discovery and love, dear 24-7.  We are going to share in many a sandwich memory together.
