Never before has a place so lived up to its name. This diner is mediocre. It is fine. It is the three star diner.
I used to come here all the time for some good old diner food for lunch when I worked in the neighborhood. Now it's not the most convenient diner for me, but I used to be a regular there. Service here was great, I always had that one server who would take care of my boyfriend and I and he was very attentive and always knew exactly what we wanted before we even picked up the menu. I love their triple decker sandwiches. Food also comes out pretty quick which is appreciated since I had a time sensitive lunch break. It's also pretty affordable considering it's located on the upper east side and they're open 24 hours! Great for all those people hanging out at the bars in the neighborhood and want some drunk people munchies.
E-Scale: 5/10
It's a greasy little local diner. I love it late at night but going during the day makes my hair smell (and my clothes). It's cheaper to go to a bodega for a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. I do enjoy the belgium waffles with whipped cream and strawberries. Open 24 hours so I usually come here when I'm jet lagged at 3am.
I used to frequent 3 star diner for breakfast on the weekends. My boyfriend has been going to 3 star for almost a decade.
With that being said, however, we both agree that this place could be great with a few basic changes. How about getting better coffee? Also better quality eggs, better quality bacon/ham/Canadian bacon?
Don't get me wrong… There will still always be a place in my heart for this diner and the sweet family that runs it, but if you want to know the truth, these prices are very high for what you're getting.
Great food and great service! Our group came for food in the wee hours of the night/morning around 4AM and our server was so friendly! You would think that at 4AM, the servers would be grumpy, but we were pleasantly surprised to receive such great service. The food was good, albeit not as generous as other diners. For example, not all the breakfast entrees included breakfast potatoes (bummer, because I love breakfast potatoes). The pancakes were good, though not the best. The Belgian waffles looked dry, but I think my friend liked them anyways. I'm curious as to why their name is 3 star diner. I mean, technically, I would give them 3.5, but hey, I'll round up because seriously, this was a bangin' experience at 4AM.
Five stars for 3 star diner, friendly / family owned and run diner with positive energy and a wonderful Greek salad.
I would usually go to another nearby diner but the NYC marathon made it impossible to get to so we tried this one.
My son asked, why would they name themselves 3 star diner and not 4 or 5 star diner? Good question! So I asked: the business is owned by 2 brothers and a sister, thus "3 stars." The hostess (wife of a brother/ owner) and manager (son of an owner) were so positive and attentive. One of the owners was working behind the counter. I strongly support family run businesses and the positive energy and vibe – with smiles, enthusiasm and fun attitudes among the employees here was wonderful.
Well, except our server who had a bit of an attitude, and even my son said was rude … His service was slow (it was busy w marathon traffic) but he seemed semi irritated and he didn't know they had classic Greek dressing for their Greek salad and actually said they did not (I had to tell him to ask the manager who I had confirmed and discussed having the dressing before I would order the salad)… But, he only works there weekends so I'm not deducting a star – everyone else there more than made up for it .
We had a delish fresh fruit salad. My cappuccino was great. And my Greek salad with chicken was WONDERFUL. I am particular about my Greek salads and have been disappointed many times so rarely order. But when I talked to them about being a Greek family owned business I asked the manager and hostess if they could make a good Greek salad and they nodded so absolutely confidently and it did Not disappoint . Requested chicken and also romaine not iceberg. It arrived as a huge salad with grilled chicken, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, feta, olives, sardines (pass but easily removable)… And their home made house Greek dressing . Mmmmm!
My son had a burger with two eggs, hash browns and toast; he's picky and liked everything; I tried the hash browns which I am pretty particular about and they were great.
They are open and deliver 24 hours. This is going to be my go to when I crave a fantastic Greek salad.
best diner in the city. one of the only things I miss about living on the UES.
cheap (as diners should be), simple menu and most importantly the BEST MATZO BALL SOUP.
great tomato soup as well and can't go wrong with their grilled cheese
The name says it all. This is indeed a 3-star diner, perfectly fine but nothing special.
Pros: The kitchen is on top of things, churning out fresh food in no time flat. My burger was cooked perfectly, the patty obvious handmade. They DO take credit cards, contrary to other reviews.
Cons: The waitresses are extremely blase, and ours never checked on us. (The friendly bussers, on the other hand, hustle and keep the place spotless. ) The coffee is thin and bitter. The booths squeezed into the space near the register are designed in a way that prevents anyone over 5'5" from sitting there; avoid them if you're an adult.
