  1. Horrendous. I feel so horrible that I spent so much money coming here. First, we had a reservation for 8:15- didn't get seated until 8:45. I came here with family who was visiting from another state. We were a party of 5. We went to the bar and we were celebrating, so we took tequila shots. Now, I don't know if this is normal, but the bartender didn't offer us any limes or salt. I just thought that it was the standard to do that, especially at $10+ a shot.  She didn't offer limes or salt, or if anyone else in our party needed anything, nothing. Also, my shot glass was cracked, it was visible and I could have easily cut my lip on it.

    The bartender was extremely unprofessional and rude. There were maybe 2 other couples at the bar, so it wasn't busy, and she literally  would not pay any attention to us, we had to get a bar back to get her. We visited the bar later in the night as well, after dinner, and she had the same crappy attitude. I would never go back to the bar. Such a bad experience.

    We sat down for dinner and it took the waiter 20 minutes to get over to our table. We had no silver ware and asked about 5 times to get some. I don't even know the waiters name, he didn't say it or have a name tag. Our appetizers took forever and so did our entrees. Then something happened that totally blew my mind. There was a waiter or a bus boy, I'm not sure, that was screaming and cursing at his manager, saying "screw these people, selfish spoiled…" I heard that and I heard curse words and then I moved my seat because it was literally in my ear. That alone ruined my dinner. We all have stressful lives and don't come out to enjoy dinner and listen to someone else's issues.

    There wasn't anything wrong with the food, it just wasn't great. Overpriced, horrible service, satisfactory food. Never coming back here again.

  2. 2 stars for friendly service and a good bartender.

    I visited with a group of 15 coworkers for a birthday dinner last night. Prior to the reservation we were sent a pre fixe menu but what was served what completely different.

    There was a consensus that we all walked out hungry when we left the restaurant and was just not worth the $900 bill.

    To start, we were served one slice of mozzarella, romaine lettuce with cubes of tomato. For dinner, we had a spoonful of zucchini linguini, a small piece of chicken and 1 shrimp per person.

    We're all very disappointed that 388 did not live up to it's great reviews on yelp.

  3. Italo American fare, too saucy cheesy oily garlicky to the max.
    Hope this neighborhood- go- to improves… It's conveniently located and it has take out too.
    Do not get the overbreaded soggy artichoke you will regret it.

Visiting NY and had to stop into one of my favorite restaurants on Long Island (Roslyn, NY).  This is a must for anyone that likes great food in a casual, fun atmosphere, but beware…the weekends are definitely a "scene".  If you don't like a scene and/or a noisy restaurant, try them during the week (M-Th) when it's not as busy.  Note: they have about 30 tables, so call ahead to make a reservation, especially on the weekend.

    "Big Chris" has a larger than life personality and always makes everyone feel welcomed, whether you're a regular or your first time.  The wait staff is attentive and professional, the small bar in the front is good for a drink and they offer valet parking for lunch and dinner.

    My recommendations: Chopped house salad w/ all the sides and cesare salad.  Main:  shrimp ala Rory, angel hair w/ meat sauce, chicken scarpirello, short ribs, chicken marsala and chicken parm are all winners!

    Note: they do family-style, so they offer 1/2 and full orders, which is ideal for large groups who want to try everything on the menu.

    If you're on the north shore of Long Island, this is a must try!  Enjoy!

  5. Came here for the first time last night to celebrate my boyfriend finishing graduate school (yay!). I had been to Matteos a few times and was never a fan, but this was his choice so I went. First, the restaurant was ridiculously cold. Strike one. Second, our waiter was rude– couldn't be bothered to tell us what was in the dishes, which is amusing because all they say are "Pasta Antonio", "Pasta Alexandria"… I didn't know that meant shrimp, white bean and escarole. I'll be sure not to name my child Alexandria, phew. We had a Caesar salad (very good), calamari (didn't eat any but everyone else said it was delicious), red snapper, a chicken dish with white beans and escarole (good, healthy), and zucchini pasta. Everything was good, but nothing wowed me. They ran out of cannoli's for dessert, so we asked for the cannoli cream with some biscotti– this was delicious, but after telling our waiter that my boyfriend was celebrating something special; he couldn't be bothered to have a candle, write anything on the plate, NOTHING. I

    hate bad, disrespectful service and I won't likely be back unless someone else requests to go. Did I mention that the mention was jumping around and screaming throughout the night? Not kidding.

  6. There are not many restaurants that can accommodate a large group and do it well. For my friend's birthday with a party of 11, 388 managed to pull off both great service and great food.

    Due to a snow storm, our group dwindled from 16 to 11. We were still promptly seated and served bread and bruschetta. Everyone scoped out the menu (it was Italian based, not sure what that "modern American" mumbo jumbo is all about). Now this is my only qualm: Everyone ordered their own dish but when the food came around, it was served family style. This is completely fine but I think they should have made that clear. We would have ordered way differently. Plus, if you're serving every dish to every person…what is the point of taking the order from each individual person?

    Here are some of the dishes that were ordered:

    Fresh Mozzarella with Beefsteak Tomatoes
    Fried Calamari
    Wings
    Fried Zucchini
    Caesar Salad
    Penne Alla Vodka
    Pounded Veal Chop Valdastona
    Chicken Parm

    My favorites were the fried zucchini, penne alla vodka, and the veal chop. The fried zucchini was very different-instead of slices, it was spiralized similar to shoestring potatoes. Delicious. The Penne was one of the best I've ever had. The veal chopped was cooked perfectly. It was topped with sliced prosciutto, melted mozzarella in a marsala sauce with mushroom. A cross between chicken parm and chicken marsala.

    As for dessert, we got a few of the following: brownies, cannoli, and Italian cheesecake. Italian restaurants never quite get the right brownie consistency, but 388 did. The cannoli cream was mouth-watering. The Italian Cheesecake is not my favorite in general, but it was still really good. It had a citrus flavor.

    The service was phenomenal. They separated the Caesar salad into individual bowls before they even came out. Everything else they cut up into small pieces and served to everyone's liking. One of the servers even positioned the plates so I could take better pictures.

    All this food came out to about $50 pp with tax and tip. Not bad for the amount of food you get.

    I would highly recommend 388 for a big group.

  7. STAY AWAY. I've been to 388 a few times and I have to say there are much better places out there. If you are looking for a place to go in the Roslyn area try any of the great restaurants located in Roslyn Village. Food here is mediocre at best and the service is terrible, I don't know why I've gone more than once, I must keep forgetting how bad it is. If I could have given 0 stars I would have.

    Awhile had past since we had gone and we decided to go there again. We were seated at a table for four that was set for 1 person. Meaning there were 3 napkins, two plates and glasses and one set of silverware. The extra napkin was removed but additional silverware was not brought till I asked for it. After we ordered a drink, the waiter proceeded to tell us that there was pretty much no beef available. There is plenty on the menu but for some reason they were out of every single piece of beef. No Skirt Steak, No Strip Steak, No Short Ribs, hell they were even out of the Baby Back Ribs and Meatloaf and Scalllops. Now I understand that you can run out of something, but it seemed like this was a quarter of their menu, on a Tuesday night. To me this is strange, maybe it is the fact that both my wife and I really felt like having beef and there was none that made this worse. Had we known about the menu changes before we ordered a drink we probably would have left. Instead we ordered some Meatball Sliders, Chicken Parm Sliders and Penne ala Vodka with Prosciutto.

    The Penne ala Vodka comes with and without Prosciutto. We specifically said we wanted it. A little while later our food arrived (be prepared it is family style served at the table) the waiter served us each a slider and some Penne and then left. My wife then asked me if I saw any Prosciutto in my serving of Penne, when I looked I saw none. She didn't have any either. Not a problem, it happens right? Right. I called the waiter over and said "I'm pretty sure we order the Penne with the Prosciutto, and this doesn't seem to have any"….his response "Let me check with the chef to see if he put it in". At this, my wife (who is normally really quiet) said "Well look, there is obvious no prosciutto in the penne, you would see it", to this the waiter said "Well I don't want to look through your food" "I can't tell if it's in there, is that cheese or prosciutto" – REALLY?!?!? Cheese or PROSCIUTTO?!?!?!?. The waiter left and went to the kitchen (leaving the plate of pasta on our table). He returned a minute or two later stating that the chef forgot and was going to cook up a plate of prosciutto to bring to us. Yup, why take the plate back to the kitchen and add it there. This must be a new service, table side cooking. A few minutes later the waiter returned with a plate of prosciutto and mixed it into our plate of pasta. As an apology, the waiter offered my wife a second glass of wine on the house. She said sure and we thanked him. OK, maybe this isn't going to be so bad. He even offered me a drink, but I wasn't drinking tonight so I thanked him but passed. When we were done with our meal, I decided to have a cup of coffee while my wife finished her "Free" glass of wine. The waiter brought over my coffee. It was pretty much a half of a cup of coffee. It basically looked like there was a little bit left in the pot and that's what I was given. When I ordered my coffee I also asked for the check, the "Free" glass of wine was added to the check. At this point we were so disgusted we just wanted to leave so I said nothing. This will be the last time we go to 388. So if you are looking for a nice night out at a trendy restaurant, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

  8. We get to 388 on a snowy, wintry, Saturday night. The place is packed – valet parking looks like they are handling the Super Bowl. But eventually they reach us and off we go.

    Inside the restaurant is sheer mayhem. Crowded beyond belief. A mixture of young couples, families with children, and groups of older people.

    Surprise! After only 15 minutes my group of six is taken to a very nice table.  (big points for that – we all expected a wait of 30 mins to an hour)

    The menu is extensive and gives 2 size choices for most selections. Prices are very fair for the area. As I go over the choices I feel that I'm back in time. Back to the era of family style Italian dining. Not at all bad but a bit unexpected.

    My table goes crazy and orders enough food for 12. We sampled many of the Southern Italian standards. Salads, shellfish, regular fish, pastas, meats, and chicken. We even had some vegetables. All were in the very good category.

    Service was a bit slow, but on such a crowded night that is to be expected.

    The only problem we had was reported by the ladies. And that was that the bathroom was awful.  Someone from the restaurant has to take responsibility to keep it clean and useable.

    I left thinking that on a quiet weekday, with a big group of family or friends, 388 would be a perfect choice.
