A random pick before seeing a show with one of my best friends. The waiter was chipper and quite entertaining and the meal was lovely. I had the duck and my friend had the braised short rib. Both of us were quite stuffed and pleased. The Malbec recommendation was fantastic to boot.
A lovely meal in a nice setting, cute bar too! It also seems like they have outdoor seating so I will definitely stop by for another meal.
Interesting little brunch scene nestled away in Hell's Kitchen. The restaurant is painted all white everywhere you look the entire restaurant in white.
My crab cake with poached eggs were somewhat decent – the crab cake was a tad bland, needed some salt or something. The poached eggs did go well with the little yukon potatoes. They interestingly serve you exactly one strawberry, one blackberry and one raspberry – as if to say we're going to give you fruit with the meal but not enough to really matter. 3 of our 4 brunch entrees were served in this manner…
Bloody marry was very standard, not very spicy but they did load up on all the extras, olives, lemon, lime, celery etc.
Overall mediocre food that I won't go out of the way for.
I've been to this place three times now. Overall I would give this restaurant a rating of 3.5. The food is mediocre, service is good (but I wouldn't say exceptional), and the ambiance is cute.
My most recent visit I ordered their mac + cheese. Warning: it is loaded. I would recommend ordering a side of greens to balance out all the cheese. The portion was generous, but the taste wasn't all that special.
I give this place an above average rating for cute decor and cute servers :o)
44&X is bright and clean, with high ceilings and lots of windows and mirrors bringing in the light, as well as some sidewalk café tables outside.
We went for Saturday brunch, and the place is nearly perfectly suited for midmorning dining. Birchbark baskets hold mini-muffins (cornbread, blueberry, etc) and place settings gleam atop wood tabletops. It's a perfect place to make your mom feel like a queen, or for a gathering of queens. I read with amusement a description of the place as "gay-friendly," a feature which, thankfully, feels dated to mention these days, in Manhattan anyway; but there is definitely a gay vibe here. Fussy and a little precious.
That carries over to the food. I had eggs bene, which were prepared perfectly. I don't know how they poach their eggs, but they are perfect little orbs, lacking the tendrils and soggy albumen that I get no matter what I do. The plate and its contents were piping hot, and featured a side of potatoes which were soft rather than crispy, which meant they were probably healthier than the crusty mess you get at the diner, but maybe less satisfying.
Others in our party had the pancakes (fluffy with wonderfully ripe berries), the quesadilla (which was squared off and stacked), the waffles (topped with whipped cream), and a burger (served on English muffin with a side of excellent, peanut-oil fries). Oh, and a western omelet, which deserves special mention as it is the size of a whale. Which was odd, because all the other portions were very modest by comparison. Most of us were scrounging onto the kids plates and diving back into the muffin basket for scraps, and this wasn't a table of big eaters.
The other complaint is more substantive. The service was well-meaning and pleasant, but inadequate. As always, YMMV, but the place was busy, but not slammed, and yet the coffee was never refilled, and our waiter was MIA for most of the meal. My wife had to flag down a busser to order another prosecco, and I finally gave up on getting another coffee refill.
Aside from portions and FOH issues I like the vibe and the atmosphere, and would still recommend it for brunch. It is certainly the classiest place in the area. And if you are still hungry after brunch, you can always head up the block to Daisy Mays BBQ, or down the street to the Westside Market, to top up. Or just get that ginormous omelet and be done.
My boyfriend and I were in NYC for the day and wanted to find a quiet, off-the-beaten path place for a nice dinner, before our bus back to Philadelphia.
He found 44 & X online somewhere and we made a reservation right then (about 2 hours before we would arrive to the restaurant.)
The space itself is beautiful, open, and bright (even though it was incredibly grey & rainy when we were there.) We were seated right away, and had a great meal overall.
We started with the scallop appetizer, recommended by our nice server. It was really delicious. The scallops had a great flavor, and the addition of the vegetables and fried bacon made the dish extra decadent.
For my main course, I went for the pan-roasted Halibut, over a bed of perfectly cut & cooked vegetables (carrots, haricot verts, brussels sprouts, etc.) It was a nice portion of fish, cooked beautifully. My BF ordered the parmesean crusted Tilapia – which was also a very generous portion over top of the polenta & spinach. We both thoroughly enjoyed our entrees.
Service was decent – attentive and friendly. Only weird thing is that they kept adding tables into an already fairly tight space, making it hard for people to get in and out (our table was pulled out into the middle of the room so my BF could get up from the table.) It was odd.
Overall, on a whim, 44 & X was a great spot for a quiet, elegant, and delicious meal!
This place was packed for Sunday brunch, so you better make reservations. The drinks are way overpriced (at least $12) and not included in the meal. The complimentary mini muffins were a nice touch, just wish they had a better selection, and maybe add some plain ones. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, the mac and cheese was a big portion and very cheesy. The crab cakes were met with praise as well. It's no freeman, but a nice little place in hells kitchen
Coming from a landlocked state, I knew my business trip to New York would have to include some seafood. 44 & X's Mahi Mahi and Lobster risotto hit the spot.
In my coworker's own words, he could have done with just a bowl of the Lobster risotto! The dish was light and our outdoor seating provided good people watching and a chance to take in the warm day.
The food was average, at best (although the mini muffins are delicious, like everyone else has mentioned in their reviews). The reason why I'm giving it two stars is because of the incredibly rude hostess.
My friend arrived first and put his name down for a party of three. Although there was an available table, he was told that he would get the next available table when everyone in our party had arrived, which is generally reasonable. When we had all arrived, we notified the less-than-friendly hostess and she told us that there were no longer tables available and that we would have to wait. We were okay with this at the time, but as we waited, we saw two women (that came after us) get seated at a table for four, after which the three of us were narrowly squeezed in at a table for two. When we inquired about this, the hostess told us that the two women were part of a party of four, but not all of their party had arrived yet.
If we had to wait for our entire party to show up, how come people that came AFTER us were seated before us, when their entire party hadn't arrived? The way this was handled left a very poor taste in our mouths, particularly because the hostess was so rude the entire time.
I don't tolerate rudeness anywhere, but it's even worse when it's at an establishment where the food is mostly subpar. You don't have much leg to stand on.
