  1. Wow.  While I'm not judging or trying to undermine any fellow Yelp reviews, I'm really surprised to see the number of low ratings for this place.

I've been working in the area for close to a decade, and have walked by this place many times.  Simply by glancing in the window, I mistakenly presumed they were just another exaggeratedly overpriced liquor store, making a mark of the corporate american and tourist trades.

I didn't stop in until I needed an inexpensive, though quality, bottle of wine for a recipe I was trying that night.  I didn't feel like waiting until after work, so I hopped in during work hours.  The store is uber clean, very well-stocked, and all bottles are arranged beautifully.

I was immediately asked if I needed assistance.  I'm no sommelier, but I know a good deal about wine.  I simply said, "I'm looking for a bottle of dry white wine."  The clerk immediately asked about the occasion.  I told him cooking.  First thing he said, "Okay…then good, but not expensive."  He gave me three awesome options, all for under $13, and from various regions, explaining how the tastes would differ.

So I came back a few weeks later.  I was immediately greeted by a different clerk.  She let me look around, never bothering me, but answering every question I had very professionally, thoroughly, and politely.

After browsing most of their sections, I can't get on the bandwagon of them being overpriced.  Yes; they have items which will set you back a bit.  But they're only for rather high quality items, for which you'll pay more around the corner, or further into Hell's Kitchen.  Most of their pricing for general items is right on par with the places in Astoria, with some items being a better buy here.

IMO? They're in the heart of expensive midtown, surrounded by people who will pay a higher price tag than this, but they're priced fairly-to-adequately for the quality they carry, ambiance they create, and service they provide.
