5th Avenue Vegetarian Delight

“We swear by this place for delivery, and though we've tried others, no place can compare to the great food, great prices, and vast selection.”

“It's really unclear why on yelp it's called 5th Avenue Vegetarian Delight because I'm pretty sure it actually has two names: Osaka Grill and Asian Taste.”

“Don't overlook this low-key Chinese restaurant because of its misleading name or seedy surroundings.”

  1. I've had so many awful things to review lately, time for a good one!

Vegetarian Delight does Chinese AND Japanese and does it well! Usually I'm wary of places that do both, but this place is for real. I love all their sushi, the spicy tuna is the one I order most often. My boyfriend is a non-fish eater and he loves getting the chicken tempura roll with spicy mayo. Yum!
I also really like their Chinese dishes. The Chicken with Almonds is great as is Chicken and Snowpeas. I'll say that the Beef and Broccoli was good but not great, I probably won't go for the beef dishes too often there and stick with chicken, vegetarian, or sushi. Eggrolls are also kinda so-so here.
Delivery is always fast and they are always amazingly nice.

  2. There used to be a mini-chain of restaurants called Teriyaki Boy.  Yes, I realize that as of this posting they still exist, but they're on the decline.  And it's a shame.  There used to be one in Manhattan on 46th St. that I would often go to, for their Eel Platter.  It was simple. A big piece of eel, sauteed in eel sauce, served over a big bed of white rice.  Seven or eight bucks.  Simple, no-frills, and pretty similar quality that you'd find in mid-range sushi joints.

So when i saw that 5th Avenue Vegetarian Delight (or whatever they call themselves that has meat too, these restaurants within restaurants confuse me) had Unagi Don, I was excited.  Even more excited was because it was ten bucks.  Of course, I should have realized that you get what you pay for.

To put it simply, it was crappy.  Five little, thin pieces of eel, sort of lukewarm, on rice.  Very disappointing.  Not tasty.  Small.

I've been to Asian grocery stores that sell pieces of eel wrapped in plastic.  It's not that expensive.  And I bet if you were to buy them in bulk, or the entire eel and then butcher it, the price would go down even more.

The way this was done was simply greedy.  Or stupid.  I don't know.  Either way though, I won't be returning.
