REAL TIME LUNCH REVIEW!
Wanted a large, create you own spinach salad…that didn't cost over $20. Got the beauty you see (picture uploaded) for around $13 (super steal in this and most nyc areas – equal salads are now upwards of $20 in my 'hood: Astoria!). Fresh spinach, croutons, peas, tomatoes, red onion, carrots, really good blue cheese dressing, and portobello mushrooms.
And the really friendly delivery dude had it here in maybe 20 minutes?
I WILL order again, making my way through the menu!
Although there's really nothing "gourmet" about this place, I like it. It's a deli. In certain parts of this town, they're a dime a dozen. Let me tell you; when you end up somewhere devoid of a solid deli, you learn to appreciate having reliable ones around.
These guys are just that – reliable. The place is clean, well stocked, fully staffed and ready to serve, and you can get just about anything here. Juices/smoothies, soups/salads, hot/cold sandwiches, hot entrees, and pretty much everything else you'd expect to find at a good deli. What's more, the service is always friendly and fast, and the prices are modest. They also just underwent some renovations and remodeling, so they're looking extra spiffy at the moment.
Being so desperate as I had to find the 90+ father a hamburger, within a few minutes, or he would have an oldster meltdown – which is not fun! And I don't cook meats I have been a vegetarian since forever. So I was forced to give 696 (strange name) a try again.
Well, either they read my previous review and made some changes or it was just dumb luck. Either way they pulled it off. Ordered the old man a "medium-rare" burger and he was happy and said it was "big".
So good deal on size and taste. Will give them a shot at a repeat performance soon.
I ordered an "A La Pesto" panini from here for lunch. When it arrived I took it to Bryant Park so I could enjoy the nice Sumer weather (and catch some Pokemon by a Lure spot, lets be serious, lol).
Imagine my disappointment when I open up my delivery container and realize that there's something missing from my panini…THE CHICKEN. Sigh. It also contained tons of roasted pepper…had this been mentioned on GrubHub I most definitely would have asked for them to be held, but it wasn't mentioned and I don't like them.
I did call and speak to a manager who said that the chicken is verrrrrrrrry finely ground up into their pesto sauce and he said something about it needing to be that way for the panini press. I've had several paninis that have contained nice, juicy chunks of grilled chicken – this was not what I was expecting when I ordered something that specifically states was a grilled chicken panini.
The manager even gave me his cell phone so I could text him a picture of what I was sent. My pics may looks great, but I was disappointed and felt deceived from what was stated I could be getting via their online menu. I'm grateful they gave me a refund because I'm still starving now. Sigh. I'd give them 2 stars but upped it to 3 because they were cordial enough to give me my money back.
Man, I miss this place. I ordered from here for three years before I switched jobs and moved away. I would walk here and get breakfast every day, and every day it was consistent, cheap and the guys made it quickly. The staff was friendly and they knew their regulars and would say hi.
This place was/is the epitome of a no frills, copy paste, NYC deli. They don't do anything that gets them on the front page of Gothamist, but they churn out reliable Deli fare day in and out. Writing this review I am craving a bacon egg & cheese on a toasted everything bagel, and it I was within walking distance of 696 I could make that a reality. Unfortunately I am stuck in TriBeCa where they forgot was a deli was a long time ago.
Great Deli! I came every day for coffee and relaxation before going to get the train to work. The employees knew me. They were great. Always smiling and friendly. The man in my picture was called Mr. PM. He worked overnight. I don't go overnight anymore so I'm not sure he's still there. He never got a day off, 365 days a year. He was always there and in charge. He was a very spiritual and kind man. He taught me some things about food allergies which I did not know. He was very knowledgeable.
This place is my kind of deli. Food is made to order quick, and fresh. Plus inexpensive for the most part. They have an excellent selection of items. It's open 24/7 three hundred and sixty five days a year. It is always clean even though it takes a beating from customers.
On many occasions I have been approached by homeless coming in wanting a handout. The employees would remove them in a kind way. Most of the time I did not have a problem. The same bothersome issue happens when the bars let out on the weekends. They get the intoxicated customers in groups that want to eat. One table of party people tried to draw me into their conversation. For the most part the deli employees knew these customers. They left me alone after being told one time!!
If you work in the neighborhood, or need to stop for a meal before catching the train, this is a good spot! I just hope the employees are as nice as when I went regularly. The place did change ownership a few years ago.
Great healthy lunch option! The chicken breast platter. You can select two sides (most are unhealthy), but the healthy ones are fantastic: they have great steamed veggies (squash, zucchini, broccoli, snap peas, carrots) and another healthier side I like are their black beans. The platter is $6.95, is larger than I can even finish in one sitting, and the delivery on seamless is usually quick and seamless.
Its my go to lunch at least 3-4 days a week!
