  1. 2 produce tents, one bread tent, 2 dairy tents, one seafood tent, one meat tent, one wine tent… all squeezed into a little church parking lot. But its cheap, local and fresh. And it takes me one minute to get there. I'll take it.

  2. This is a great local market in the neighborhood. There are a couple vegetable vendors, fruit vendors, organic bread at Bread Alone, a honey, beeswax seller and a creamery with some good cheese. They also sell antibiotic free beef, chicken etc.. but I do not have ANY culinary skills, so haven't tried them. There is also compost collection, textile recycling etc.. Its no Union Square, but its perfect for my limited needs, not to mention the convenience. I try to go every Saturday.

  3. Love finding these greenmarkets out of nowhere along a side street while walking through my neighborhood. Been coming to this one for a while now whenever I'm close by.

This one is located on 82nd between 1st and 2nd aves. Open every Saturday from early morning until around 2:30 pm or so during Fall and Winter season weather permitting from what I was told.

Nowhere near as large and impressive as the Union Square greenmarket, but has a nice variety of fresh goods and produce to purchase. Just right for a small local market.

All types of apples, greens, potatoes, veggies, breads, baked goods, chicken, seafood, dairy and local farm fresh goods.

What's great about this time of year is that they have hot apple cider for sale by the cup, and apple cider donuts. Yum!

  4. Been a review drought for a while – I was putting reviews on reserve until I could pick the hundredth.

    E82nd Greenmarket, you're a winner!

It would have five stars, but for the size of the market. It's great for my needs, but it's no Union Square (also won't bankrupt you like Union Square). It is now year-round, and has a fruit seller, a veggie seller, a beeswax/sheep pelt/organic stuff seller, usually a honey seller, I think a chicken/meat/eggs (?) seller, in the summer two more veggie sellers, usually a local wine seller, the bread and baked goods guy from Bread Alone, the fish guys, and of course the Greenmarket tent girl, who does a great job with recipes and such. Sometimes there are guessing games, I once won a bag of goodies for a chestnut jar guess. Fermi question skills FTW!
Beth's Jams USED to be there, until they BAILED. What the hell am I supposed to do with my frequent jammer card now?? Use it to spread jam on my toast? Jam that I can NO LONGER BUY??
Anyway, the market is on the sidewalk and in the parking lot of St. Stephen's Church – sometimes the church ladies put out a carafe of coffee, and a basket for donations. Do throw a buck or two in that basket for the poor old church – show some love!

Are you really still reading? Here are some deets:

Apples all the time from Samascott (upstate), and other fruit, in season. Samascott is mainly fruit, but they'll have some seasonal veggies, like ramps (good price. If you're "over" ramps, see Jay's snarky comment about hipsters, I'll be over here snapping up your ramps). If you're lucky, their dog comes along – a South African Boerboel – he (?) could pick his teeth with a pitt bull. But he looks friendly!
OH, I almost forgot – in the fall, the hot cider at Samascott is a must have.
    MUST. HAVE.
Also in the fall, more apple varieties show up – you can pick up some heirloom apples and really get your pretentious yuppie on.

Also on the sidewalk are the veggie people from Jersey. I forget their name, but they do veggies, and some fruit, the way Samascott does fruit, and some veggies. They seem to have some pretty good stuff. They have heirloom tomatoes way early, I think the guy does them in his greenhouse. They're not cheap out of season, but they're legit.

Finally on the sidewalk, the shady Hungarians selling sausage out of their trunk down the block are not part of the Greenmarket – who knows what's in that sausage! They crack me up. Black market sausage! Only in Yorkville. I wonder if they had something to do with the fire at the Hungarian deli … HUNGARIAN MEAT MAFIA!
Speaking of Hungarians, occasionally some sort of Hungarian Girl Scout group sells baked goods outside of the church. Get on that, if only for a taste of the ethnic authenticity that the trust-fund babies are pushing out of Yorkville (more like Murray Hill with each passing day).

OK, in the parking lot, you'll find everything else I listed above. I really only use the Bread Alone guy. The baked goods are so delicious, they're the best stuff around. Be nice to the bread guy, we like him. I should find out his name. We call him "treat man".

OK, enough blather. But if you read this far, I'll leave you with one more tidbit …
If you go later in the day, Martine's Chocolates should be open (it's the pink shop next to the parking lot). Get anything there, the chocolate is amazing, but if you buy only one thing, get the "oyster".

You can't go wrong with that jazz.
